Bench World Cup 2014

Recommended Posts

In this round of matches, Uruguay does a number on Kintamayama, and Kaiomitsuki. Kintamayama need France to lose, or else his chain breaks on the first spot. Kaiomitsuki is guaranteed a break at spot number 2, but can still be saved by the results of Leonishiki's gamble match.

On a side note, the results of the Japan vs. Ivory Coast match have saddened me.

Kotononami vs Kintamayama

Kotononami:

Well, my round-one Group G refioiji duties now involve only finalising the scores as BOTH Pitinosato and Domichi were destroyed on the very first line by Uruguay's shock defeat to Costa Rica. Well done to Kuroimori and Kamogawa for remarkably easy wins. They'll now be going for goals to bulk up that goal difference, which may come in useful later.

Pitinosato:

1. Uruguay

2. Switzerland

3. Germany ®

4. Colombia

5. Iran ©

6. Italy

7. South Korea

8. Greece

9. Croatia

10. Bosnia

Kuroimori:

1 Mexico
2 Brazil
3 Colombia

4 Nigeria ©
5 Russia
6 Ecuador
7 Italy
8 Portugal ®
9 Cameroon
10 Costa Rica

The colours here say it all: Kuroimori has five winners out of six, Pitinosato has only one out of five...has really been let down by his team. The score is currently 1-0 to Kuroimori but it could well go a lot higher.

Kamogawa:

1. Brazil

2. Italy

3. Ghana ®

4. Ivory Coast

5. Cameroon

6. Colombia ©

7. England

8. USA

9. Japan

10. Costa Rica

Domichi:

1. Uruguay ©
2. Brazil
3. Belgium
4. Mexico
5. Colombia

6. USA ®
7. Russia
8. Iran
9. Bosnia
10. South Korea

This match was a lot closer, in that Domichi would probably have won if Uruguay had...so he will join a large graveyard of round-one players royally screwed by either Spain or Uruguay. Currently 1-0 and this is indeed quite likely to be the final score.

Don't forget, Group G players...the deadline for Round 2 is 6 hours before.

Some real surprises so far in this World Cup. I missed the Colombia and Uruguay games sleeping but I thought Italy were lucky...they look very average to me...and Ivory Coast deserved the win as Japan failed to turn up in the second half.

My big gamble of Japan backfired spectacularly in the Bench game, just as I predicted in the comments, so the best I can do now is a 0-0. Still, given the massive advantage my opponent had with Chile, I'd have taken that before the round started if it had been offered. I've also got a decent chance of pulling it off as I only need Nigeria to beat Iran (very possible) and USA not to win (also very possible)...although in this World Cup, who knows??

shimodahito: My lower M pick Costa Rica roster plays league in Spain, USA, Belgium, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Greece, Netherlands, Russia. This round faith pick: Switzerland. This round no faith pick: Croatia. With Jejima's Hong Kong time zone, I hope to catch him sleeping.
Jejima: I don't seem to have much faith in either of my special teams..... Hopefully that will change for round 2!
Refioji Pregame: Jejima's squad may strike first as it sees a lot of action on the weekend while shimodahito has quite a few teams playing next week (somewhat contradicting his comment ;-) )
Refioji MbM:

Thu: Croatia lost but shimodahito cleverly put them near the end, so there isn't much to see.

Fri: No action, this game is slow in the build up

Sat: Finally we are seeing shots here and there with shimodahito's Colombia ® coming through, but placed even better by Jejima. The loss of Jejima's Greece ® isn't hurting much as he put them at the end, but his England © also lost making his shot from Ivory Cost potentially meaningless. Finally, Costa Rica is featured in the comment section but still placed last by shimodahito which seems like such a waste now.

Sun: France is coming up at first slot for Jejima! The second half will decide this game.

COMMENTS
Pandaazuma: Hmmm...my opponent has a slight advantage here in that his komusubi (Chile) has a freebie while mine (Netherlands) will struggle against Spain so I need Nigeria to win or draw, most likely. Also weird that my opponents R and C picks are the exact opposites of mine (in the very first game), and that they're likely to be around the 4 and 5 spots...so I'm gambling on a draw or win for Japan and my opponent having IC at 4 so I can break his chain. Now watch me get this spectacularly wrong! Good luck, Maguroyama!
Maguroyama: No comment.
Refioji Pregame: Maguroyama and Pandaazuma have identical teams in the first two positions, so Chile's placment on third might indeed become a winner.
Refioji MbM:

Thu: Has the game even started yet?

Fri: Maguroyama produced a fine shot with Chile while Pandaazuma likely misses a stunning shot from Netherlands.

Sat: We watch Pandaazuma getting his special teams spectacularly wrong. :-) Maguroyama cleverly placed his Japan ® low while producing a good shot with Ivory Coast while Pandaazuma might break his chain with Japan.

Sun: The second half will start slow with Pandaazuma trying to recover from the shock at the close of the first half. Actually he needs a lot to happen now with a Nigeria win and USA loss but the game is not over yet.

A general comment: I think the Bench World Cup really needs more real life draws to make for good games... without draws the chains just break or both continue without scoring goals. So I see a lot of low scoring results in round 1 coming up unless the second half is different.

I recall at least one such draw-heavy round from the previous tournaments, and the results were low-scoring anyway because it just resulted in a lot of Draw vs Draw 0-0 slots. Not much difference between a D-D 0-0 and a W-W 0-0, the real issue is underdog wins because it causes early chain breaks for most players.

Draws are the worst thing that can happen on a football game. It ends as it started. That is one of the reasons I only watch the highlights if at all.

Hi Andonishiki,

My first update was after the completion of Day 2 (4 games) (see page 8 of this topic). The second official update will be done after the completion of Day 4 (7 more games).

The reason I wasn't able to do daily updates is that my computer at home is not working and I have to do the updates from my office. I'll do unofficial update after the completion of the match between France and Honduras - a very important game for all squads in group "A", especially Jakusotsu, who is hoping for a big surprising loss of France.

So, check after 90 min. for the unofficial update. The Tables will be posted tomorrow.

So I was, but it was more wishful thinking than a real hope.

Unfortunately, the wish did not come true.

The first bout is decided:

Chocshoporyu wins and Jakusotsu loses. The only thing to be decided is how many goals will Chocsy score 1:0 or more. We will see.

The second bout is far from being decided. It can go either way.

After the first 4 spots Andonishiki leads 1:0 because of his ® teams's win, but this doesn't secure him a win.

What are the options:

1.) If Ghana wins - Fujiyama wins, Andonishiki's line will be broken at Slot #5. And the score will be 1:1. Fujiyama's line unbroken.

Game continues.

2.) If Ghana draws - Andonishiki's line will be broken at slot #5, and if Russia wins Fujiyama's line will be broken at slot #6.Game over - win for Andonishiki 1:0.

3.) If Ghana draws - Andonishiki's line will be broken at slot #5, and if Russia draws - Fujiyama's line will be broken at slot #6. Andonishiki wins 1:0.

4.) If Ghana draws - Andonishiki's line will be broken at slot #5, and if Russia loses - win for Andonishiki 1:0.

5.) If Ghana loses, score 1:0 for Andonishiki, but Fujiyama's line will be unbroken. Game continues.

Then it depends on Russia. In order Fujiyama's line to continue to be unbroken Russia has to LOSE. Otherwise Andonishiki will be a winner.

If this happens, in order Andonishiki to win KOREA has to lose.

Many, many options. We have to wait till the end until all games are completed.

If your chain isn't broken (with a USA loss) you might actually still win as high as 4-0, with your ® team scoring, possibly Portugal losing, South Korea and Algeria winning. The scoring is virtually the same even if one side's chain is already broken. There are a handful of exceptions, but none apply to the Maguro-Panda slot #5. Because...

If your chain isn't broken (with a USA loss)

... Simon is definitely toast; a C-team loss against an active normal team is always a chain-breaker, even if the opponent also loses (table 3). Edited by Asashosakari

"Toast" in the sense that your chain is definitely dead on slot #4. You're right that a 0-0 is still possible anyway.

In todays update, Kintamayama has had his chain broken on the first slot. So, he loses this match. Kotononami will score 2 points on this match. Russia's result will not change this.

So, final result of Kotononami vs Kintamayama is a Kotononami win of 2-0.

Kaiomitsuki and Leonishiki are still waiting on the results of the Nigeria match. A win there can potentially net Leonishiki a lot of points on the match considering how many winners follow that. A draw or loss will break his chain on the first spot, and net Kaiomitsuki a single goal and a win.
