Hatsu Basho 2003 re-live ...

Recommended Posts

As always, the Eurosport coverage remains a very exciting moment, especially with great comments of Mr. Syd Hoare !

And a good way to simply watch the basho for the first time or to re-live it a second time, with more replays, comments and a better view !

So, yesterday, days 1-2-3 were broadcasted and within half an hour, this will be days 4-5-6 : my video tape is READY TO RUMBLE !!!

So, yesterday's re-live : At first, Kaiho really really impressed be, beating the huge (especially comparing to him) Iwakiyama and as always, Kaiho, the warrior, resists well, does his best and up to the edge of the dohyo, you know he can always have a great attempt to win it and that's what he did ! Sometimes, he does not, sometimes he does. Very unpredictable fighter who can beat anybody (including Asashoryu) and unfortunately be beaten by anybody too ... He's my favourite "little sized" wrestler ! He's a real warrior, 100 % commitment guarantee ! Come on, Kaiho !

Takanowaka Vs. Toki : usually, it's an undecisive one, but that time it was 2 easy to Takanowaka against light blue mawashi Toki : Toki, don't wear that one never, it's like a curse when you wear it, you lose all your power !

Takanohana Vs. "barometer" Wakanosato : when you're one favourite and when you lose to Wakanosato, you lose the tournament, that's a true fact since Wakanosato is in Makuuchi (very well analysed by Mike on sumotalk.com) and Taka didn't lose but he should have lost after a disappointing fight, and strange no judges objected to give a torinaoshi because the situation was really too tight to decide with 100% certainty of a winner. Though, we had a bad angle proposed by Eurosport, with Taka in front of Sato and really difficult to say.

Kotonowaka's three first bouts : absolutely catastrophic ! Too weak, just too weak ... For viewers who wouldn't have seen his followings bouts, well, they would really be right to think his career was over and he could end with 0-15, and amazingly, he made a great basho after this very bad start, which was even one of his best - with such a rank - and technically too - over the past 3 years at least ...

Very amazing Tokitsuumi Vs. Kotomitsuki bout with a lot of twists, and impressive win by Tokitsuumi which let think that he could be another wrestler than the classic well-known maegashira wrestler he is.

Takanonami still very experimented with his provocations (false starts) and even if he finished makekoshi, I remain a fan and I wish he gave us many moments like this for some years to come ! A basho without Takanonami is no more a basho.

Miyabiyama Vs. Takanohana : For the first time in 11, Miyabiyama had a real chance to beat Takanohana, and he was so confident that time (because of Taka badly recovering with his right leg since a couple of years) that Miya executed a "huge judo throw" as said Syd Hoare and should really have deserved to win for such an inspiration. It was given a torinaoshi but it seems to me Miya touched the ground the first because of his huge size, and Miya lost very quickly and disappointingly for the re-match ... He will never beat Taka, that's definitive !

I can't believe Tochinonada was so so so so so x 1,000,000 weak Vs. Otsukasa ... What did happen to him ? He was in another world ? Was he sleeping ?

Wakanoyama really bited the dust Vs. Kasuganishiki ! It's not only an expression, that's how he finished ...

2 easy classic push-out throw to Nami Vs. lighter Aminishiki. Very disappointing Aminishiki. He's not a warrior like Kaiho, sometimes.

Very significant win of Tosanoumi Vs. Musoyama, same style, almost same bodies, and old Muso could be on his way down very soon, I'm afraid.

Finally, one of the most significant one during this coverage was : Asashoryu Vs. Dejima, Dejima was on the edge of the dohyo, then outside and he had lost but he managed to crush the Mongolian, like a late move of vengeance. At that moment, the Mongolian was very angry with a terrible look to Dejima and even when he caught the money enveloppe, he still had that terrible look, which seemed to say : "insolent, see you next time, I won't forget that"

(Cursing aloud...)

During that tournament Tochiazuma really looked like a ghost of the former glory he was and especially during day 4 Vs. Kyokutenho, very poor bout.

Before we had another strange unusual Tochinonada losing so poorly to Kyokushuzan ... and the same comment to Kotonowaka losing poorly to Wakanosato ...

Nami almost managed to surprise Asashoryu thanks to his unfair-play strategy at the tachi-ai, as always : Nami does it so often, he starts too quick to provoke the opponent or like that time, he decided not to start, when it was the right time, he had his left hand which did not touch the ground, so it was not a valid start ! It was a good way to lower the mongolian's concentration and to take advantage of him for the real start. Nami was leading the bout but during a short moment, Asashoryu "woke up" and he went out of this trap, winning easily at the end !

After the end of day 4, Eurosport broadcasted its classic ads and I don't know if you have the same version as me (about advertisements too) but each time I watch that one, in english or in french I just can't stop smiling, the ad is called "chillest mood" and with the purpose to sell these compilations with those chilly music tracks and the TV salesman always says :

Me too.  4-0 during the first 4 days, including a very nice win over the popular Toki.  But then 4 losses in a row, and ultimately KK 7-8 record.  What happened to him?  I didn't see signs of a serious injury.  Maybe just the competition got too tough?

For today's coverage of days 7-8-9, Syd Hoare was very inspired ! How did he say they call Wakanosato in Japan ? Popeye ? Really ? For the strength ?

He called Tochinonada, "the Ozeki killer" too  ;-)

And I really loved when, talkin' about Kotonowaka winning by fusensho to Takanohana, at day 9, Syd said "fusensho or no show" which is a new good translation of fusensho !

Best moments during these days : (to me, of course)

Wakanoyama stopped, couldn't break the "Takanotsuru" wall !

Kyokutenho grabbing Takanowaka so fast, putting him on the edge so fast and winning so fast !

Very good Tokitsuumi Vs. Asashoryu bout and during a moment, we imagine Tokitsuumi is much better than a simple midtable maegashira ...

Huge overarm throw made by Kyokushuzan to Nami, we found the good old Shuzan back for this tournament ... He was so "absent" during the past tournaments ...  (Thumbs up...)

Just for the record..

KK is Kachikoshi -8-7  MK is makekoshi, or 7-8.

I humbly put it that I was the first ever to use these initials..

I was really pleasantly surprised to see the full report on Asashoryu's yokozuna promotion on Eurosport: from acceptnace speach, celebratory pose on shoulders of his heya-mates, making the tsuna (wow), Akebono teaching him the dohyo-iri, and ending with his first dohyo-iri at Meiji shrine... (does anyone else think that very shortsighted Takamisakari might not be the best choice of tsuyu-harai? :p )

I almost fell off my chair laughing when I read this line. Mostly because this is exactly what I thought when I heard about it.  :-P

I ran out of video tape just after the last bout of day 15, so I didnt get any of the ceremonies on tape  (Unhappy...)

Enjoyed watching it tho.

Btw... He got such a small fish after his yusho! They usually get bigger ones  :-P

I just love it when they get that fish.

So what happened to days 10-13?

If they where shown, they weren't advertised.

That pisses me off no end.
