Canadian Sumo Hope

Recommended Posts

Lost. 6-1 finish.

Thank you for the spoiler! :-(

The spoilers rule was removed from the forum a decade ago. If you didn't want to know the result why would you read this thread?

Well, I wasn't here a decade ago. I just care about the 30 minutes between your spoiler and e.g. Tenshinhan's video (thanks btw). Some people here don't have live video access to sumo bouts. And we live in different time zones anyway. In a thread titled 'Canadian Sumo hopeful' I don't expect bout results by the minute.

The only information you gave was that rikishi A lost x:y against rikishi B. No other additional value. Everyone can easily find this out and see the result on the net.

There's a thread in the forum with 'spoiler alert' in its title. It's a regular thread for years. And 'spoiler alert' is there for good reason.

Many of us appreciate the up to the minute results and video. We wait chewing our fingernails for the results!

(IN THIS CASE) :'-(

So 90% chances for no Internets another 2 months...

More like 100%, unless your extra 10% cover the possibility of his oyakata having a change of heart. He's not getting promoted to sandanme this time.

As for the mini-controversy, I do recall a convention agreed upon several years ago that Ozumo Discussions should generally be kept spoiler-free during a honbasho, and only Honbasho Talk is anything-goes.

Of course the real issue here is that this thread has been kind of misplaced in this section for the last several months anyway. It's Honbasho Talk material now, not Ozumo Discussions.

I did some research and found some ancient form of written communication which is called "letter".

Will check further how exactly that works, but from what I saw some sort of kensho envelopes are a vital part of it.

Maybe there is a YouTube tutorial on how it actually works. ;-)

As for the spoiler issue, I suggest to check the Sumo Database Daily Results page with the 'hide results' page first.

However, even when clicking on the video link there with the results hidden, the YouTube starting screen still picture sometimes spoils everything when it shows the gyoji pointing his gunbai.

I am not an expert but I guess these screenshots are randomly selected.

Coming back to the bout, it was clearly decided at the tachi-ai.

Brody seemed very nervous, judging from his hand movements to his face in the pre-bout ritual.

Not to allow morozashi was today's lesson.

So no promotion to Sandamme, but better chances to maybe getting his first yusho in November.

I think he's going to have his hands pretty full in high jonidan next time. Better than 5-2 would surprise me, unless he improves a lot in between tournaments.

And in that time Brodi has moved beyond the status of sumo hopeful.

Even injured he shows a steep learning curve and high potential. Of course wed all like him to yusho his way to the top, but there is no question about his talent and no harm in being careful and a lot of sense in taking time to get things right -- an investment that is sure to pay out a thousandfold.

And I don't like that it's me who looks like having created it - my post just was the first to get merged into this split off thread.

It's up to me therefore to change at least the title.

A win would have put him into the Jonidan yusho playoff, but 6-1 is still very impressive given his circumstances. It is also a great improvement if you consider he went 4-3 in jonokuchi.

These youtube thumbnails are really annoying (even showing a rikishi at the edge or outside the dohyo sometimes). Indeed they are selected randomly but it's also possible to choose another thumbnail. Actually if I click on the video link in the DB, this "starting screen" is not shown, the video starts immediately. Is it different for you?

Considering the actual quality of his opposition, it's not really that much of an improvement (although I admit he certainly looked a lot more in control). The guys in lower Jonidan are just awful in general, while guys in their first basho can be good enough to be practically anywhere on the banzuke.

The sumo app for smartphones is terrible that way too. It almost invariably shows the winner on the thumbnail shot. Or at least it did; I haven't paid for it in a few months.

He'll be around Jd20 next basho, it'll be quite a challenge.

Very happy seeing Brodi's performances this basho. So far blowing all the opponents away with ease.
