Konishiki interview

Recommended Posts

Excellent, Sir! Thank you very much.

His attitude towards henka is kind of hilarious, because I remember him falling for henka every other bout. (When he was well past his prime, I admit.)

Caught it before it (possibly) goes....

Great interview. Konishiki really opened up.

Great job, Kintamayama, and thanks a lot for doing this, it was very interesting.

What really impressed me was his openness and the frankness with which he speaks. Although he obviously didn't want to start a war with the Kyokai when discussing his difficulties as a foreigner in training, he did give some pretty insight on what he went through. The comment "at least at the keikoba you get to punch back" is more than enough to get him my respect...

I do think, however that I will maintain my previous position about the way he views his own time compared to others. He obviously has a very low opinion of the Mongolians (btw he only got to fight - and lose - four bouts against any Mongolians, all at the very end of his career against Kyokushuzan and a young Kyokutenho), and of course that is his right, but his claim that Onokuni, Asahifuji, Takanosato and Futagaguro of all people are so much better than the current batch of Yokozuna can only be explained as nostalgia for his own active time and a high opinion of his own abilities (also quite evident when discussing the way "we" did things technique wise).

All in all, I am very very glad to have watched this, and I really wish there were more chances for us non-Japanese speaking fans of sumo to listen to insiders speak about their experience. My thanks to Kintamayama again for making it happen.

Thanks, Moti. Excellent interview. I just heard about the bad news. I wonder how Kyokai found out about your channel. Is there going to be enough time to save all your uploads? I wish I could help you out--after all you've worked hard for many hours on those.

I'm OK for now-hopefully, someone got their senses back and decided to leave me alone. Or maybe it's just a random algorithm that came into play.

In any case, not cool.

I should probably get a life.

Whenever I think about someone saying something along those lines to someone with a peculiar interest that absorbs much of their time, I think, "They're probably perfectly happy with their life as it is. Who are you to judge?" Perhaps that's obvious to all of us here, but it seems lost on the vast majority of people who only partake in mundane things and wouldn't think of being caught doing something out of the ordinary.

Cool stuff! Thanks!

Not so sure that Hakuho wouldn't even have made it to Ozeki in those days though... Him being virtually untouchable and all in these days, bet he'd fair pretty good in those days too. Then again: we will never know.

I think I’ve read many people taking Konishiki’s comment as Hakuhō “not even making ōzeki”, but what Konishiki said in the interview actually is “he would barely make ōzeki”. So he thinks he’d have made ōzeki, but just barely.

presume so Moti - I am only speaking to BBC side / their op here. No time for Konishiki myself.

Last Thursday lunchtime Konishiki recorded an interview that will air on BBC radio.

Decidedly different comment to those in the vid with Moti.

I recorded my own comments the same evening, and it is now in final editing I hear so probably out soon - on the BBC World channel. About 8 or 9 mins.

The first bit (IMO) added to what I knew already of Konishiki's story.... but if I had to choose (and I don't, as I have both available), I would go with the Moti interview, as it seemed more 'natural' - but it was nice/interesting to hear Mark give his thoughts.
