If I'm not mistaken, the Kyokai folks seem to have overlooked one kyujo, namely one rikishi among these five:

Sd27e Kainishiki

Sd27w Yoshifuji

Sd28e Saio

Sd28w Aratoshi

Sd29e Hienriki

All the rikishi above and below them are scheduled for bouts, so somebody must be the odd man out here.

I am really surprised Homasho hasn't retired yet... If he stays kyujo the entire basho, next time he'll be almost 34 and at the bottom of makushita :-(

I think it is a good idea Homasho to miss another basho but to heal entirely.

See what happened with Tochinoshin who dropped down to Ms55 and after that 4 Yusho in a row and this basho he is M1.

If the reason is injury rather than degrading performance, a comeback after healing is not impossible, so getting well should get priority over presence at keiko, let alone participation in a tournament. It takes time to heal and it takes time to become fit again. No matter how low the rank, he should get a chance.

Of course, but Tochinoshin was 27 when he started his comeback, not 34, and lets not forget it is Homasho's second long injury...

I'll be very happy to see Homasho making a second comeback, but sadly, I can't see it happening...

I dunno. Tochinoshin is 8 or 9 years younger. Homasho's most successful schtick was thrusts, not the mawashi. Slappers don't seem to have the longevity of the belt-fighters, and once their power is gone, they seem to decline swiftly. I'm not saying that Homasho doesn't have another skill set, just that he seems most effective when he can thrust. Even supposing Homasho heals the arm 100%, he's getting to the point when his strength would begin to wane. I'm not sure a comeback is the cards.

I'm not sure that's really true - I'd say Homasho's big calling card was always his defense, and the specific manner in which he'd actually win his bouts was almost incidental. Given that it's a knee injury that's taken him out this time it's well possible that his sumo becomes too "floaty" after recovery and he ends up being a pushover for most opponents, but I don't think it's the only potential outcome at all. It really depends on just how close to 100% of his most recent form he can get - if it's anywhere near it another year or two as sekitori don't seem out of the question to me.

Other kyujo

Deputy head of the shimpan-department Izutsu-oyakata for the (most likely whole) basho, Nishonoseki-oyakata (ex-Wakashimazu) replaces him as chief shimpan at the dohyo.

Sankaku gyoji Kimura Tamamitsu still has a sprained right ankle and is kyujo again also for this Hatsu basho. On Feb. 27th he reaches the retirement age.

Kyujo forecast

Day 1 - Tosayutaka has an injured ankle. Limped out after his loss to Tokushoryu.

Kyujo seen as more and more likely: he injured his right knee. "There was some sound at the knee as I remained at the edge. It really hurts. (Appearing will be) tough."

It really pains me whenever a rikishi gets hurt, and it’s so often. I feel like the whole keiko system should be widely changed…

He may need surgery for a cataract. As shimpan he needs good eyes.

Interested in knowing what Chiyootori's problem is.

Chiyootori is out with influenza.

http://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXLSSXK10054_S5A110C1000000/

Influenza is a 3 days illness. Maybe 4. If so, he shoukld be back soon, in this basho

Sorry: posted before read the answer above

This is confirmed. The NSK added Aratoshi to the kyujo list during/after the day 2 matches.

What? Influenza is not just a 3 days illness. That’s just a common cold. An influenza can last for over a week with very high fever.
