Book about Sumo Techniques/Training

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

that would be my first post in this forum. :)

Since I think about starting a sumo training group in my area, I wanted to know if there are any books about that topic, means literature about Sumo techniques and/or exercises. I have the opportunity to take some Sumo lessons from an already experienced practitioner now and then but because of the distance it cannot happen on a regular basis. Thats why I am searching for something in black and white. I already checked and robbed Sensei Youtube but the information there is mostly not in detail. It is ok if the source you might propose is advanced stuff, I have 10 years of Judo experience.

Thankfully

The Nihon Sumo Kyokai (Japan sumo association) has this on their site.

You need to follow the two links at the bottom of the page.

Welcome to the forum, and good luck starting your sumo training group.

With 10 years of judo under your belt, you will learn the techniques very quickly (sumo is the grandaddy of judo). Naganoyama's link to the Sumo Kenko Taiso pages is definitely worth looking at, although the instructions are somewhat vague, so you will have to cross-reference using other sources (YouTube, etc.). These pages were a useful resource when I was researching sumo exercises for my blog, but I had to watch a lot of videos of actual rikishi training to put all the pieces together. You can download a free tutorial of some sumo conditioning exercises from my blog. However, since I developed the sumo fitness routines with a non-sumo audience (including martial artists) in mind, I changed some of the exercises a bit to provide the best workout for less flexible non-sumo athletes.

Anyway, I hope this helps!

Thomas Zabel's book is basically the current North American Amateur sumo wrestling bible:

http://www.amazon.com/Sumo-Skills-Instructional-Guide-Competitive/dp/0991408608

It's not full of too much stuff that will surprise you if you're experienced, but it teaches you the basics of training (shiko, suriashi, etc) and illustrates how various kimarite are performed.

They won't go into detail about training but a couple of my favorite books that tell about sumo (sport and the history) and life as a sumo wrestler are

The BIG Book of Sumo by Mina Hall (1998)

Dynamic Sumo by Clyde Newton and Gerald J. Toff (1994)

A bit dated but still interesting reads.

These two books are both good - and I have met both of the authors (Mina even gave me a Big Book of Sumo T-shirt.) - but my absolute favourite sumo book is easily Grand Sumo Fully Illustrated <http://www.amazon.co...y illustrated>. (This is the second time today that I've mentioned this book on this forum.) Not sure it will give you too much depth about training, but it gives an excellent overview.

Thanks for mentioning this book, Kasutera. I was wondering how I had missed it, and then I realised it's brand new -- copyright 2014!

The books listed by Mukonoso and Jejima are definitely worth looking at (adding to your collection).
