rhyen 1,823 Posted March 14, 2015 Hakuho faces Toyonoshima on Day 8. This seems odd, as he is the 16th highest ranked active rikishi that Hakuho could face when he'd normally face the top 15 only. I'm guessing it's due to a combination of Takekaze and Aoiyama doing very poorly despite facing few few upper sanyaku, and Toyonoshima doing quite well. It still seems odd to see the top ranked guy jump over multiple rikishi to the point of going beyond the normal limit well before his maegashira matches are done. They could have have Kisenosato, Harumafuji, or Goeido face Toyonoshima and be more in line with tradition as they all have Toyonoshima in their top 15 due to members of their heya in the joi, so I'm wondering if it's more of the first factor; typically you see the tail end of the joi pick up a decent number of wins before having to face the top rikishi, but the two mentioned are doing quite poorly. Playing handbags one day just for the heck of it and tossing down guys with one hand the next. Highway 46 Posted March 14, 2015 Man, Aoiyama is just not competing this basho. :/ But I'm glad Goeido is doing good at home. Hakuho seems unstoppable as ever. Interesting what Terunofuji is doing, but I doubt he will measure up against the higher ranked guys. Ichi and Kotosho are providing some pretty entertaining bouts though, like watching these two. It's nice to see Aminishiki at 36 (and hobbled by two decades of sumo) have a first week like this. Terunofuji is likely to have a lot of first weeks like this, as he and Ichinojo are in a contest for who makes ozeki first, and if either will make it this year. Quick halt to his forward momentum before reengaging. I usually don't mind the not-a henka much but he has been overdoing it this basho. Well the question now is Zensho or no? Maybe he is is giving Futa's record another go a little bit earlier than expected. - Ichi (Did show some good balance again) and Fuji (Maybe stumbled/tripped up a bit) looked terrible today but meh they have done pretty well this basho and hope Ichi rejoins at K/S - Osu seems to be finally weaned off his forearm and looking much better with his mummy pads off. - Glad Goeido got his ass kicked with his lame ass tachiai & pull. Yesterday he deals brilliantly with the young up and coming monster Ichinojo, but the day before he dances around and today he just doesn't seem to have a plan. He seems to have an inability to get his mind and body in synch and clearly either doesn't have a plan, or has a plan that sucks and leave him completely exposed to the talents of his opponent. To paraphrase a nursery rhyme, "when he is good he is very very good, but when he is bad he is horrid". He has so much obvious talent but like Kise he seems to let thinking get in the way of his ability to use it well. Having a better record than Goeido at this point in the tournament is not surprising but having a better record than Kisenosato is a surprise. Tokitenkuu gave up his signature kicks and even Oosu seemed to have moved on from his kachi-age. Kisenosato saved his honour against Terunofuji.
