Pandaazuma 1,310 Posted March 18, 2015 Wasn't really paying attention at the time, but I think the NHK lads said Aminishiki's injury needs a month for recovery. I'd personally like to see him sit Natsu out and come back from lower Makuuchi in Nagoya...but you know what these lads are like!

As usual, you should take the indicated resting/healing time 1 month in this case and multiply it by at least 4 to get an adequate recovery time.
Jakusotsu 6,049 Posted March 18, 2015 I'm surprised there were any ligaments left in Ami's knee to be damaged.

It sounds pretty serious, and I really feel sorry for Aminishiki. Mods: I think we have not only an "Endo situation" but an "Aminishiki situation" as well. Perhaps time to split the comments about Ami's injuries in a separate thread?

Perhaps time to split the comments about Ami's injuries in a separate thread? Aminishiki has been compensating for knee ligament damage for 10-15 years. During that time, he has only gone kyujo 5 times and never for more than one basho. He is now 36 yoa. Soon, there will come a time that he will have to hang it up, but I would put money on his return in May, and I would expect him to pull off a KK. There is a good reason why he is one of my favorite rikishi.

I truly hope you are both right, but based on the news report describing his injury May seems very optimistic.
orandashoho 720 Posted March 19, 2015 Oh I do so hope that Aminishiki will be back. He may have dropped out before, but he never missed a basho. I suppose he is clever enough to know when it is really over, but I fervently hope that he will grace the dohyo for a while yet. I just can't imagine Makuuchi without him! * *or without Kyokutenho for that matter
Andreas21 188 Posted March 19, 2015 I'd put my money that he call it quits. It's sad, but I think about the enjoyment he has given us all these years. Have you seen his face, right after it happened? Torn ACL, plus MCL and meniscus damage. I think I have an idea what it looks like in the knee if these happen together in the same event. Knee is dislocated in more than one dimension. Next time the shank gets loose. (Exaggerating a bit ... not much.) I'm surprised there were any ligaments left in Ami's knee to be damaged. That's a joke, isn't it? The braces are just there to protect them, the main duty to hold everything in its place are still at the ligaments. With a really broken knee he could barely walk, let alone do any type of sports (darts maybe).
Kasutera 258 Posted March 19, 2015 If he DOES retire, it seems rather heroic to go out going kachikoshi and only being stopped by an injury. If he were Klingon that would earn him entry into Sto'vo'kor for sure.

alaninjapan 18 Posted March 20, 2015 If he does retire, I hope NHK and the sumo establishment give him some sort of roving reporter gig. It would be the best incentive I can think of to improve my Japanese enough to follow his witty commentary.
orandashoho 720 Posted March 20, 2015 Didn't he have a coaching spot waiting for him? It's not clever to let all that experience slip away.

I still dont get what's causing all the injuries this basho. Is it just particularly bad luck? Although when I see rikishi tumbling off from the dohyo I sometimes do think that it's a wonder they don't get injured more often.
orandashoho 720 Posted March 21, 2015 I think one of the first things a new wrestler learns is how to tumble without injury. The second might be dealing with a great weight disparity and avoiding getting cushed, or we would see many more injuries like Endo's. Sumo is all about attack and turning defense into an attack. There does not seem to be much room for protecting one's joints; being limber enough to take punishment must be a major part of training.

They do learn to tumble, but I don't think any heya has an elevated dohyo like they use during honbasho.

While probably above normal, I don't think the number of injuries this basho is particularly excessive. They ended up affecting some of the highest profile rikishi, so you probably noticed it a lot more this time around.

You're probably right, though I suppose I also assume that high-profile rikishi would be experienced enough to avoid injuries. Of course usually it happens in a splitsecond, but there's some kind of situation that leads up to it.

Sorry, I'll link directly to the post in question: http://ameblo.jp/ami-nishiki/entry-12019763894.html?frm_src=thumb_module (what's a thumb module?) Anyway, this statement: 言い表せない感謝の気持ちは土俵の上に元気に立つ姿をみせる事で お返ししたいと思い、 場所に向けて頑張ります Makes me feel that he's trying to return, right?
