Sansho Natsu 2015 (Special Prizes)

Recommended Posts

Well, a rather short list this time:

Kanto-sho: Terunofuji (3rd, in fact he won 3 consecutive Kanto-sho now!)

Gino-sho & Shukun-sho have not been awarded.

That's disappointing. I mean, I'm glad for my Hoshitori chances that Kaisei isn't getting one, but....

Oh sorry, it was shown during the NHK broadcast.

I am curious about the recommendations and votes for the Sansho.

Kittanofuji just uttered some soft dissapointment that Amuru wasn't given a Kanto-sho, under the condition that he gets his 10th win today.

Well, it proved to be some kind of jinx, as Amuru then lost to Sadanofuji....

Nobody else has won a sansho yet this year at all. :-)

And now with the Ozeki promotion for Terunofuji, they may be saving big on hardware. I thought Yoshikaze showed great fighting spirit, but admittedly at too low a rank for him. Same story for Ikioi and Takayasu.

I didn't think about it at the time, but I had been thinking about most of the basho who they were going to give a shukun-sho to, as there were multiple candidates and it wasn't clear who would get KKs. If they knew that Terunofuji was going to win, maybe they'd have given Sadanoumi one, but didn't want to give him one for just a win over a Yokozuna who gave up kinboshi to much weaker rikishi. It might also be an image thing; Sadanoumi doesn't seem particularly good (at least to me), he just somehow manages to win often enough, and he may not have been thought of.

During the broadcast it was mentioned that Kaisei and Ichinojou were nominated but did not get enough votes.

Results of the sansho committee meeting. There were 19 participants, so a majority of 10 votes were needed for a sansho to be awarded. NHK announcer Yasuo Fujii was back in his usual role as moderator.

Kanto-sho:

Terunofuji - unconditional. 16 votes, awarded.

And the unsuccessful nominations:

Shukun-sho:

Sadanoumi - conditional on winning final bout. 6 votes, not awarded.

Terunofuji - unconditional. 6 votes, not awarded.

Ichinojo - conditional on winning final bout. 4 votes, not awarded.

Kanto-sho:

Ichinojo - conditional on winning final bout (vs. Kaisei). 3 votes, not awarded.

Kaisei - conditional on winning final bout (vs. Ichinojo). 1 vote, not awarded.

Gino-sho:

Terunofuji - unconditional. 6 votes, not awarded.

Lots of discussion and suggestions during the meeting. As Ichinojo had defeated Hakuho (who was in the yusho race to the end) he could be nominated for a Shukun-sho. Although Kaisei was also involved in the yusho race he did not fight many high-ranking rikishi, so he was nominated for a Kanto-sho. However, other committee members preferred to make it a winner-takes-all Kanto-sho between them, hence Ichinojo's nomination for that as well. Of course, it turned out to be a waste of time since neither got anywhere near the votes needed.

The three shimpan directors were the ones to vote against Terunofuji's unconditional Kanto-sho, as they had preferred a conditional award if he won his final bout. That did not proceed to a vote since the unconditional nomination was already successful.

To address the comment Gurowake made above, Sadanoumi was eligible for a Shukun-sho because he defeated the yusho winner, not because of his kinboshi from Harumafuji, although obviously a kinboshi doesn't hurt his chances. However, head shimpan Isegahama-oyakata pointed out that Sadanoumi had a fusensho among his eight wins - not his fault of course, but it likely weighed against him in the vote. Other participants noted that Terunofuji lost against Hakuho and could not fight Harumafuji, which likely weighed against him in his Shukun-sho vote.

Shimpan directors Fujishima (former Ozeki Musoyama), Izutsu (former Sekiwake Sakahoko) and Isegahama (former Yokozuna Asahifuji) during the meeting.

A vote is taken.

Afterwards, Kyokai press club liaison Futagoyama-oyakata (former Ozeki Miyabiyama) writes up the results sheet.

Yeah, I definitely was wondering whether that fusensho would hurt Sadanoumi's chances. I'm surprised that it was explicitly mentioned.

I also have to wonder how many of the 6 votes for Terunofuji to get the other two prizes came from the same people. Given that they probably voted sequentially and there were some that wanted to see him take another sansho, I'm thinking they were mostly if not all the same. It would be amusing if there was majority agreement he should get 2 sansho and disagreement which other one to give him, and thus give him neither, but I doubt that happened.
