Akua was home in Oarai town today. Being the pride of the town, the people's hero as encouragement got a fresh 5kg (mede)tai "yusho" fish from local fishermen - with an excellent 9-6 kachikoshi after a 1-4 start

Yesterday ex-Shiraishi, the new Tohakuryu (he's from Tokyo) with Tamanoi-oyakata made a courtesy call to Soma, Fukushima, to report the juryo promotion to mayor Tachiya (Hidekiyo), together with the head of the heya's local koenkai Tachiya (Ichiro). The heya had regular training camps there before Corona times.

Today Tobizaru 翔猿 made a short trip to Tokyo's Edogawa ward office to report mainly his good result from the Aki basho. The heya had received 3 tai fishes for yusho use then, but he failed to get the yusho: "One time I want to lift it (the fish) up". Thus the goals for next year: sanyaku and a yusho parade in Edogawa ward.

It's the time to sum up the year with one kanji character, and he picked tobu 翔 (fly, jump) from his shikona: "Feels like I jumped to the top."

Today Daieisho reported his yusho to his old school, Saitama Sakae high. Yusho is another occasion to give a big rice donation to the kohai at the school. For new sanyaku he had given them 600kg, now it will be 1 ton.

You saved me asking about the very frequent references to Saitama Sakae in recent commentary, but I don't trust the translation of the article (which renders Hokutofuji as 'Kitakatsu Fuji).

So, is that a record for the school, or is it a record for all high schools having alumni in makuuchi?

Saitama Sakae always has the most alumni in sumo, 2nd is Tottori Johoku with regularly just half of that, now 14 https://sumo-guide.com/tottori-johoku-high-school (makuuchi: Terunofuji, Ichinojo; juryo: Ishiura, Churanoumi, Mitoryu and new Takakento), the 3rd is way behind, so this is a record for all schools.

Saitama Sakae are quite strong in various sports - besides the sumo team, they used to have  a good running team, currently a great badminton team, Daiya Seto, the swimmer, hails from there.............and what else I do not know, but are quite proficient in training  high level young athletes.

The tachi belongs to him. Where else should he get the necessary one for his yokozuna deshi and the kanreki dohyo-iri.

Generally, in sumo you have the "gottsan desu" system. Anything you give a rikishi gets pocketted with that remark.

it's not something I paid a lot of attention to specifically, but it seemed like Hakuho and Kise had new swords forged for them and presented as gifts. While still an fine and expensive gift, that act doesn't seem different than fashioning a new kesho mawashi; it's part advertisement, part gift, you know? This is the first time I've noticed a museum relic with some historical significance bequeathed to a yokozuna. Doubtlessly, it's happened a lot; I've just been obtuse in observing previously.

Ichiyamamoto today was at the city hall of his hometown Iwanai (don't tell anyone), Hokkaido, to have his juryo yusho celebrated

On the 2nd he was at the middle school in Fukushima town where he was instructor at the sumo club in his time as town employee, earlier that day he was at his old high school in Hokuto city. He had returned to his parents home in Iwanai on the 29th. o
