Kokonoe Oyakata hospitalized-will miss the Basho

Recommended Posts

Ex-Chiyonofuji will be kyujo this basho. "Internal disease". is what is being said. Three weeks of hospitalization required. No official certificate with exact medical problem, just that vague announcement. His job at the Kyokai at the moment is to seek out rikishi who do "lethargic sumo", a far cry from his former serious appointments.. People in the know say he wasn't seen in Nagoya before the basho. Just last May 31st he did a spirited kanreki dohyo iri.

Hopefully he'll make a speedy recovery. He looked in great shape for his kanreki dohyo-iri.

Turns out he had an early stage of pancreatic cancer and was operated back in July, losing 13 kilos as a result. "I'm OK. I have a healthy body.." he stated today, looking healthy. He is back on his job as the watcher of lethargic sumo.

That's a terrible news, hopefully he doesn't have the aggressive type of the disease and he can overcome it...

For him to have cancer like that I wonder if he is a heavy chain smoker. It seems to me that there have been quite a few current or former rikishi who have chain smoked.

He did smoke early in his career but quit back before his ozeki promotion in 1981.

Kokonoe looks quite genki, also with reduced weight, watching a boxing match together with wrestling star Sayuri Yoshida

faking frailty with a cane? or a weak left hook?

Come on, that is not the Kokonoe. The Kokonoe NEVER smiles under any circumstances and certainly never fools around feigning punches etc.. It's an alien lizard being or some such thing. And a pink jacket?? Really? Oh, it's Don Johnson!!

Pancreatic is no joke, my aunt died within a year from that. Hopefully they did get it early and it didn't spread at all.

A long article about Kokonoe-oyakata's post-surgical treatment (3pages): http://www.zakzak.co.jp/sports/etc_sports/news/20160714/spo1607141057001-n1.htm

He refused to take anticancer drugs and since the start of the year does a "4 dimension pin-point exposure" radiation therapy.

Pancreatic cancer has a high relapse rate.

Appeared originally as the top article in the recent edition of the Josei Seven women's magazine: http://www.news-postseven.com/archives/20160713_429997.html
