On August 5th, the jungyo tour will have a Sabae-basho, but it will take place not in Sabae-city (which donates fire engines and ambulances to Mongolia via Harumafuji), but in the Sun-dome Fukui, which is in nearby Echizen-city. Jungyo man Onomatsu-oyakata (ex-Masurao) was in Sabae to sign the contract.

Seems a done deal, a short article at the nikkansports website says that he will participate in the jungyo, citing the NSK.

Wakanosato on his farewell tour at the Natsu jungyo, which started on the 3rd in Gifu - he'll take part (at least) till the last Aomori location on the 20th - and likely will announce his intai after he finished the jungyo (maybe he'll go to Hokkaido) and till the banzuke publication on the 31th.

Oguruma Oyakata jungyo man is not happy with the top guys' participation in keiko at the jungyo. Today in Gifu,Terunofuji was there. Very much so, having 9 bouts against the likes of Sadanoumi and winning them all. Then, he lent his chest to 19 year old Juryo Oonoshou who was not a no-show but actually showed up. Second day of the jungyo and still most of the guys were not showing up. "It's really funny when missing these training sessions becomes the norm. The people are coming out here to see us train .." said Terunofuji. Hakuhou was there as was Tochiouzan. The three Japanese Ozeki were not. "If the guys don't start to train seriously during the jungyo, it will be over before they realize it. At this rate, Hakuhou is going to take the yusho again.." warned Oguruma sternly.

Terunofuji showing Oonoshou his boots, and no, it's not Houmashou in the background.

Ozeki Terunofuji took on the faltering Ichinojou yesterday at training, doing bouts and lending him his chest in an attempt to "wake him up" from his deep slumber..

They both arrived in Japan together 5 years ago and went to the famed Tottori Johoku high school.
Terunofuji was dead serious during the training "If he has no wish to do it he will never become stronger. If you go easy on him, it won't be good," said Terunofuji.

On the third day of the jungyo- Terunofuji is the only Ozeki/ Yokozuna who showed up every day. "That's normal.." he said. Oguruma jungyo head is not happy. "The Yokozunae should be aware of their status and show up!" he said, rather annoyed.

How I wish I could come to see this.... A guy I work with ( one of "Aomori sumo guys" ) says that this is really going to be his last so I must go... but I can't (Weeping...) (Weeping...)

Akinomaki, inhashi, thank you for putting up those nice pictures. His smiles really break my heart though. .. it's been almost 20 years now since I started following him.

Injuries, injuries.
Terunofuji injured his left knee during asa-geiko on the 8th, against Myogiryu - he stayed till the dohyo-iri and was kyujo for the torikumi that day - but tomorrow is another day.

Ikioi was operated on his left shoulder, he had water and a clot of blood removed. At present he is still in hospital for rehabilitation: "Nothing serious, I'll enter the Aki basho", but kyujo for the jungyo.
A reason for his bad performance at the Nagoya-basho: before the basho bacteria got into a lymph node of his left thigh and he could hardly walk.

Homarefuji continued training with higher ranked opponents, though he belongs to the first half and the rikishi usually change - he finished 14-10, including bouts against Takayasu and Ichinojo.

Meniscus injury. Cannot do any sumo at all at present. No projected recovery date. The knee area is swollen, no keiko as well. "It hurts like a mother. I have no idea if it will get better or worse,. I will be monitoring it," said Terunofuji himself. It happened in the middle of training when he had a misstep. People around him are saying that this pain in the knee is not something new.

Hakuho is pulling the yumi totally wrong, and whoever is in the back (Terunofuji?) is not doing much better. Did they really not give any instructions at all before letting them on the dojo?

Reported on Aug 7 by Sports Hochi, Wakanosato is temporarily out with conjunctivitis, but says that he should recover in time to participate in Aomori. Looks like several from Sadogatake beya including Kotoyuki have also been infected and is likely to spread. Signs have been posted in the preparation rooms to alert rikishi. It appears to have started in Nagoya with Isegahama beya and has become 'epidemic'. Oguruma oyakata has ordered medication to be sent from Tokyo to treat those affected.
