That may very well be, but kyudo/Japanese archery is a totally different animal. You're supposed to draw the bow (which itself is already different) in a very different way, which is why I'm surprised that apparently they weren't instructed. Especially since kyudo has a deep connection to Shinto, much like sumo.

You just see a picture, not the movement or how he shoot. Can you imagine that he maybe is just about to draw? Or that he just fixes the target with his eyes, without any attempts of shooting it immediately? There is no tension at all in his body in this picture, so I guess he is not about to shoot, but just "holding" bow and arrow.

I don't need more than this picture. I have a lot of kyudo experience and thus can safely say that at no point ever, never, ever would a kyudo practitioner hold his bow in such a position, pointing at the target. Not aiming, not holding, not drawing or in the middle of a movement, just simply never. None of them have even a shooting glove equipped which is in fact even more baffling, and also never done. In the atrium of the commercial facility KITTE (stamp) in the J(apan)P(ost) Tower in front of Tokyo station a dohyo was opened. Naruto-oyakata was at the "hakkiyoi KITTE" ceremony.
The jungyo KITTE-basho will be held there on the 29th, sponsor is of course JP.

It looks like injured Yokozuna Harumafuji will be joining the Natsu jungyo as early as tomorrow. He was in Mongolia for the last weeks getting treatment for his right elbow and has returned to Japan three days ago. "He is now able to stretch the elbow a bit. He can't do any sumo yet but I think he can do the dohyo-iri.. " explained his Oyakata Isegahama.

Another jungyo casualty-this time it's new guy Mitakeumi the ex-college Yokozuna who started at Makushita tsukedashi 15 and just completed his first Juryo basho, short hair and no topknot notwithstanding. He went to the hospital today with hip pains- left hip joint sprain has been diagnosed-three weeks to rest. "I am injured and will leave the jungyo early and return to Tokyo.," he said. He has been getting extra "love treatment" at the jungyo, first from Ozeki Goueidou and yesterday it was Terunofuji's turn- he got thrown around pretty badly by the new Ozeki.

Hakuhou has hardly ever missed morning training during a jungyo since becoming Yokozuna. He missed training this morning. Apparently, he grazed his left toe during keiko a few days ago and seemed to have aggravated it during yesterday's match. "When I awoke it became worse. Looks like there is a bacteria.." said Hakuhou. He reported this to the jungyo boss Oguruma and is taking oral medication. "The strongest guy is doing the most serious keiko..I feel lonely when he's not here.." said Oguruma. Hakuhou did participate in his match, wearing a tabi sock thingy.

Not only the main basho, also the jungyo basho attract big crowds recently. And the number of jungyo days comes close to those in the Waka-Taka era (soon in which the continuous decline started though). This Natsu jungyo has 20 days, last years 8, 2013: 3, 2012: 6. Top (since 1972, when accurate records start) are 1973 and 1992 with 31 days.

A graph with the number of jungyo days per year for the last 40 years, for this year up to the Aki jungyo. 2011 saw 0, due to the yaocho scandal. This year after 14 years again my have more than 60.

What gave whomever does the English-language version of sumo-related materials for the NSK the idea that "sumo" ought to take the definite article? I thought it was just a bit of "Engrish" peculiar to the new website, but now there it is on that exhibit for the jungyo.

Exhibition matches by sumo wrestlers will be held on August 29.

Taking time out of their busy training schedules in the lead-up to September's Grand Sumo tournament at the Kokugikan, a number of top rikishi will be making appearances during the event period, while retired pros show off against kids on August 15 from 1pm. You'll also want to check out the Grand Sumo exhibition (on 11am-9pm August 12-28, 1F Atrium) before the main event on August 29, when all three yokozuna wrestlers are scheduled to make appearances.

Wakanosato now at his home tour, but he is grieved now with a loss much bigger than his career: his father died on the 17th. He shortly went to his family while traveling to the next jungyo location, but - hiding his grief- concentrates on sumo till the end of the home jungyo tomorrow and then goes to his father's place like a son should.

At the end of jungyo, Hakuho summed it up with praises for Onosho and Terunofuji, who have according to him, worked very hard the entire duration of jungyo. He was relieved that he finished it without any major injuries, even though he was only satisfied to one day practice from the jungyo's 23 days. It was good to see many places, and he had made good memories, but was looking forward to rest.

At the 2nd day of Sapporo jungyo, Chiharu Matsuyama, a folklore singer, encouraged Hakuho to aim for his 40th yusho, with 50th being feasible in the future. He said it might be difficult to keep his motivation high, but the greater the wall (of difficulties), the more fun sumo is.

At the event, Matsuyama took commemorative picture with 3 yokozunas.
