Basho Talk - Aki 2015 +++ Spoiler alert! +++

Recommended Posts

Now we just need to figure out a way to tie the other stories about Miyagino-beya into this one. Hmmm...

One is easy: he was robbed of his home-ground which made him great (the aura there must have prevented injuries - or rather the injury resistant Kyokutenho left the scene and that put Hahuho down).

Though the Mongols are still to a great extent used to a nomadic life, for Hakuho being a degeiko nomad apparently wasn't the right thing.

That's what the new place still looks like - people can watch through holes from the outside.

Still? Are they going to plug the holes then?

Perhaps, like Dracula, he needs to put a bit of his native soil inside his futon when he sleeps, to preserve his powers.

Maybe Okinoumi and Yoshikaze simply ate a lot of garlic before their bouts with Hakuho?

Anybody else see Tokitenkuu's missed kick on Chiyootori and think of Charlie Brown and the football?

Well with Hakuho out now the field is open to anybody. Kakuryu and Terunofuji will each try to get their second yusho, and we could get a first time yusho winner from anybody else. Hakuho also had a couple records going: 722 consecutive matches as a yokozuna, 51 consecutive kachikoshi basho and 51 consecutive double digit win basho.

While I admit always cheering the rare Hakuho loss (always makes the yusho race more interesting), I will miss having him there on the leaderboard. I hope the knee injury is minor and he will be back kicking butt in November.

Congrats to Okinoumi for a STUNNING and CONVINCING victory today!!!

Nice to see Ichinojo is awake this time (So far) Lets go for 10 wins!! GO ICHINOJO!!!

Tochiozan, lets go for 11 wins for a continued run for Ozeki.

I have a feeling Osunaarashi is gonna bottom-out this tournament. 4-11 :(

My prediction for Aki: Terunofuji 13-2-P Y Hakuho 13-2-P D Tochiozan 12-3 J Okinoumi 10-5 S Ichinojo 10-5 K

(Yes, I realize this is VERY WISHFUL thinking)

With Yokozuna Hakuho out, I will "adjust" my prediction as follows:

Terunofuji 14-1 Y (Yusho Deciding match on Day 15)

Kisenosato 13-2 J (Same as above)

Kakuryu 11-4

Ichinojo 10-5

Kotoyuki 8-7 (That respectful bow during his match just won me over, I'm a FAN :-D)

Osunaarashi 4-11

Let's see how long it takes them to remember that they normally shift the West yokozuna to the East side on the schedule if it's been vacated through an injury withdrawal...on the freshly-released Day 4 torikumi they haven't done it.

If I remember correctly wasn't there something where Kakuryu served east for one or two days after Harumafuji pulled out last basho? Then he got shifted to the west.

So, next basho will be Kakuryu's FIRST as Yokozuna 1 East? As much as I would like to see Kakuryu get his 2nd yusho, I'm fairly confident Terunofuji starts his Yokozuna run in the basho.

Should Terunofuji take the yusho this time, would it not be a bit awkward that we have a current ozeki holding more yushos than a current yokozuna? Not sure when/if it happened before. I don't think he would be promoted even with a victory this time correct?

Of course there were situations like this.

Quick glance says:

Asahifuji had his third Ozeki yusho overtaking Onokuni.

Onokuni took his first yusho overtaking Futahaguro.

Longer glance says:

Actually, not much more.

True. Though, Futahaguro is an outlier in a variety of ways I suppose. As for Asahifuji he was promoted the next basho so it wasn't like he stayed on the banzuke ranked lower. Would Terunofuji get the nod if he won this time around?

No. He needs 2 consecutive yusho (or one should be at least a playoff lost like Kakuryu).

I know I commented about it earlier in this thread, and it was confirmed that if it's a jun-yusho, it (more than likely) needs to be an "equivalant" performance, like Kakuryu did (14-1-P D, 14-1 Y). Historically, that has not ALWAYS been the case (Tamanoumi, Wakanohana 2, Mienoumi, Onokuni) but I'm thinking that it would have to be along those lines for Terunofuji.

Does anyone have a "dark horse" prediction for the yusho?

It is just day 3, anything can happened, but I´m impressed whit Myogiryu and Endo. Ichinojo needs another slap by Hakuho?? ;-)

Long bout between Teru and Osunaarashi. But the outcome was obvious :/ Really wanted to "2 day older than me guy" to win.

Also, Did I hear about a Hakuho's kyujo? My N-5 isn't enough to understand some words in watching NHK...

EDIT (10:51 GMT+2): Just heard it. Hakuho has a kyujo. Aoiyama wins by fusen. O_O

Osunaarashi really proved himself legit against Terunofuji. Great Sandstorm was spectacular (Applauding...) Otake oyakata should be pleased.

Yushokaze, 'nuff said.

Nah... He ran out of Yokozuna :-P . If he had a few more on the banzuke maybe he'd have a better chance at a yusho.

That's why Yoshikaze has always been my favourite, because he always gives everything, every time. Great win.

And before he went Kyujo last basho, Chiyotairyu got those eight wins by blasting people with his awesome tachiai. And this basho he's back to pulling (and losing). is it injury related or something else?

That was one of the most hilarious and goofy moves I have seen in Ozumo so far.

My first thought was a mash-up video showing the kick again and again with the famous "Can Can" by Jacques OOffenbach as soundtrack.
