Basho Talk - Aki 2015 +++ Spoiler alert! +++

Recommended Posts

Off topic now, just wondering: When did they add the previous electric kimarite display? I don't recall seeing it before. They don't have one in the Aichitaiikukan in Nagoya, do they? Or did they add one recently? I always thought that was half of the fun while scoring on your daily torikumi, asking around or being able to provide the answer when people didn't catch the kimarite announcement after the bout.

It's always been there, at the KKan at least, AFAIK.

The Asashi article mentions the start of the predecessor of this electric scoreboard as May 1958 in the Kuramae kokugikan, but not if it had a kimarite display.

I was referring to the Ryogoku KKan. Misleading on my part.

Holy crap Kakuryu how lame can you be! Bowing out of a straight-on fight against a worthy opponent is not a hallmark of a great yokozuna.

And Sadanofuji could've won his fight if he could generate any power at all. He has a similar body type to Terunofuji and Ichinojo, but doesn't have any power at all...

Can't wait to hear the YDC talk about that one... hinkaku ga nai.

I didn't say Terunofuji has no technique. However I do think that his size/strength is what often bails him out in instances where his technique is lacking or ineffective. But I think his technique will continue to improve. He's a beast, but still a work in progress, imo.

He does have that ability to just overpower and toss someone.

The benefits of a 1-6 start.... ? Vastly different schedules for Kitaharima at J2E and Takanoiwa at J2W. Takanoiwa makes his 4th trip to Makuuchi tomorrow, while Kitaharima has made one. In addition, the Juryo opponents faced by Kitaharima were on average lower ranked.

After tomorrow both could be on 5 wins....

Way behind on this, but did people get a chance to see the gyoji taking a flying leap off the dohyo under his own power in the Chiyoo / Shodai match on Day 8 Nakabi? At first I remembered it as being a lower division battle, but now that I see it was juryo, so I suppose many have seen it. I happened to be there on the day and can upload the video if anyone is interested.

Ah, good. This is a better angle (for the gyoji pratfall, not so much the bout). I see no way to link video and there is a 500K limit to uploading so, here it is on youtube where I just uploaded it. He dropped his gunbai, which I've heard is a big no no; perhaps everyone pretended not to notice. I'm proud of him for still managing to point his gunbai the correct way. It would be easy to make a guess, but still, he could've got it wrong.

I am sure I will be told there are three ways I could've linked the video, silly boy. Ah well.

disclaimer: I didn't actually take the video, I was sitting next to the person who did, who was fine with me posting it.

Sure. Here is No. 1: Change the link from youtu.be to youtube.com.

I like the girls voice. 正代くんがんばれ〜 :-D

From what I could tell, the only reason he knew which way to point the gunbai was the gyoji that was "on deck" basically told him. There was no way the gyoji of record could have seen the end of that bout.

That was my take on it too. I looked for a signal of that sort in the video (not that closely). I was too into the spectacle at the time to notice whether he had a cue from someone or not. Edit: I take it back, the video quality is not so good, but there is a subtle gunbai signal to the right (stage left) from the gyoji "on deck". It couldn't have been more subtle and still shown up on the video. :)

btw, I changed the link as advised to just youtube.com, but it still shows up as a link as opposed to being embedded.

I'm pretty certain that the LED kimarite display was from this basho; I even asked around about this, and the consensus was that it was installed this basho. I agree that it kind of ruins the fun about asking around for the kimarite. If they are going to break this tradition, they could at least turn on the LED and display the winner for pre sekitori matches (I know, not gonna happen).

Is it often hard to hear the kimarite announcement in the KKan?

Not really, unless it is a rarer one and hard to make out because of this. It takes more of a focused attention span than anything else. It usually takes them a bit to announce it, and by this time the next rikishi are often already getting on the dohyo (in pre sekitori bouts anyway) and your attention diverts to them.

Ichinojo looks clueless, but this could all be due to inexperience. He is still learning how to deal with experienced sekitori, he still needs time employing different techniques against them. So far, so good.

What is not so good is his lack of speed. It is giving his opponents too much opportunity to exploit the moments he is out of balance.

Ichinojo needs to work on his technique. Other sumo are using superior leverage to get underneath and work him over. He needs work on using his size and weight to his advantage.

Osunaarshi vs Okinoumi: What a crushing victory! Reminded me of a similar victory by Harumafuji vs Kisenosato; I believe it was Hatsu of this year, and Harumafuji's victory over Kise in the Haru basho of this year was also somewhat similar, but slightly less humiliating. There should be a new name for this kimarite: Chokeslam-o-toshi

Just watching the last few matches it seems as though Osunaarshi has his legs back and is able to utilize his superior upper body strength. The slaps and belt work look like he is putting strength and technique together.

Speaking of Big Sandy, I assume you guys saw this in the news? I saw it earlier but forgot about it until now. I doubt I wasn't beaten to the punch, as it were, on this one, but here it is:

http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20150923/sum15092319550006-n1.html

妙義龍(大砂嵐の荒々しい張り手を浴び)「こっちは相撲を取りにきているのに、向こうは相撲を取っていない。意味が分からない」

Myogiriyu said after his bout yesterday when he got a barrage of harite form Osuna "I came to do some sumo, the other guy is not doing sumo. I don't get it."

edit: yep, found it under "Talks" which I didn't realize was a rikishi quoting thread. Ah well, it's worth seeing twice.

I expected a few ii-advised zabuton after Tochiozan's upset against Terunofuji... ;-)

open a new browser tab. Paste the link into that and load it. The youtube display that opens will have the correct link. Then copy everything that belongs in a "normal" youtube link (everything to the left of an & sign) and paste that in.

Oh heck, here:

I had never stood next to Yoshikaze before May, he walked by me and I had thought he was a bit smaller, he's not really that small!

I've said the same thing about a lot of the "smaller" rikishi. I guess it's a comparative thing. When I met Baruto, I remember thinking that his leg was bigger than I was.

Yoshikaze keeps rolling. I would hope that the sansho committee is unanimous for the shukun-sho that he is definitely deserving of this basho.

The shukun-sho should go to Tochiozan now, if Terunofuji wins it and he another one.

I'm pretty sure Yoshikaze has the Shukun-sho wrapped up and would be shocked if he didn't take it. I mean, the man defeated 2-Yokozuna, 2-Ozeki, 2-Sekiwake and 1-Komusubi. I mean, if that's not enough, WTF is?
