Kintamayama 45,525 Posted July 15, 2004 There were no less than 4 sashichigaes (overturning of Gyoji decision by monoii) today, 3 in Makuuchi and 1 in Juryo. Kimura Shounosuke, the gyoji of the last bout and the gyoji of all gyojis, went to Kitanoumi Rijicho to talk it over. The tate-gyoji has a small dagger on him, and in case of a missed call, is expected to commit suicide. OK, WAS, in the old days. Instead he went to Kitanoumi, who said unto him- " I'd like to see you pull yourself together and start all over again from tomorrow"- a pep talk, if you will. In the MIB, Asa and Sato fell almost on top of Oshiogawa Oyakata, who was the head shinpan. "I couldn't see who won. The other 4 shinpans were unanimous in their decision that Sato was still in. Then, my earphone connection to the TV replay booth stopped working. We had some of the young guys run up to the booth to verify that this is what happened". Add the Asa-Kotonowaka thingy to this, and it seems some gyoji/rules/shinpan revisions may be in order..

I miss such colorful traditions so much... (Heart) Otherwise, you made me understand the difference between football and sumo : in football, the referee doesn't have access to the video because it's not in the rules ; in sumo, the shipan doesn't have access to the video because technique is out of order... Must be some Gaijin technology, because Japanese electronic stuff always works, doesn't it ? hoshidango 0 Posted July 16, 2004 The tate-gyoji has a small dagger on him, and in case of a missed call, is expected to commit suicide. Sounds like they did it on the spot before the next bout. Man, how messy it couldd have been....
Kintamayama 45,525 Posted July 16, 2004 Today in Juryo-2 monoiis-one overturned decision-the gyoji in the Osh match blew it badly.it was a no-brainer, yet he totally botched it. Must have been his viewpoint.

Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted July 16, 2004 I still think if you consider overturn rate as part of the total number of calls the gyoji have to make, the sumo system is just fine. In basketball it is routine to have one referee overrule another one the court, and usually no one thinks twice of it, but then again in basketball one referee call usually doesn't decide the winner. In baseball not only do the 1st/3rd base umpires routinely disagree with the plate umpire on caught swings, but it is the player's choice (!) as to when the 1st/3rd base umpire should be consulted. In American football there's a huge crew of referees who consult each other on nearly every play and it's hard to tell when one overrules another. How often do lines judges (or whatever they're called: the two who run along the sides) and the head referee disagree in soccer?
Kashunowaka 300 Posted July 16, 2004 How often do lines judges (or whatever they're called: the two who run along the sides) and the head referee disagree in soccer? They are officially called "assistant referees", although the term "linesmen" are still very much used. The job of the assistant referees is to indicate offside, throw-ins etc. and the referee usually doesn't override them in such cases, although it happens now and then. When a linesman is in a better position to judge e.g. a free-kick situation, the referee can consult him for his opinion. But since it's the referee who makes all the decisions, it's hard to say how often they disagree, and actually it won't matter if they do.

Actually, the home plate umpire must ask the base umpire to make the call which under the rules is the responsibility of the base umpire. The players DO routinely "ask" for a call, but the base umpire is not required to make a call unless asked to do so by the home plate umpire.
