WAKATAKE 2,671 Posted January 8, 2016 That knee was pretty bad for Pharaoh. I would imagine if he sits this whole basho he's looking at either M16 or J1/J2 for Haru. With Tokitenkuu's condition the way it is, and if he sits out all the way this basho he's dropping behind the curtain for sure. At 36 he doesn't have too much to prove anymore, plus he's got a kabu. Naganoyama 5,948 Posted January 9, 2016 Yes that's terrible news for Tokitenku. The rib was bad enough, but this!
Akinomaki 40,779 Posted January 9, 2016 (edited) Actually that was the rib. Looks like it was just announced as a broken rib, but Tokitenku had pain there since Nagoya and was diagnosed then with a partly cracked, but not a broken bone. The pain was apparently from the tumor. It became so intense that he couldn't sleep at night. A friend introduced him to a hospital in Tokyo and the 2nd check there showed a tumor, a detailed check that it was malignant lymphoma. Since end of October he's taking anti cancer drugs and will continue with that till April. He lost about 15 to 20kg, and hair due to side effects, but according to the oyakata appears well and can walk like normal: it is not life-threatening.He wants to return to the dohyo after that, but intai may be better for a quick recovery.http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1589783.html Edited January 9, 2016 by Akinomaki
Akinomaki 40,779 Posted January 10, 2016 The medical certificates supplied for the kyujo notice give 1 month of medical treatment necessary for Osunaarashi and 6 months for Tokitenku. http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2016/01/10/kiji/K20160110011834290.html

Akinomaki 40,779 Posted January 10, 2016 Chiyootori on the way to kyujo (did I say Kokonoe-beya?). In the bout with Mitakeumi his right leg remained on the dohyo while the left was already on the ground below. He injured the left knee and was diagnosed in hospital with 3 days of rest necessary. "I can't do the sonkyo crouch, I can't put strain on it. Bending it hurts." Amuru would get the freebie.http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20160110/sum16011021010011-n1.html
Yubinhaad 11,761 Posted January 10, 2016 Fukuyamato suffered a bad left knee injury in the Aki basho. I don't know the exact nature but he is currently in rehab for it. Suzune has retired.
Gurowake 4,107 Posted January 10, 2016 So is the thinking that Osuna will miss he entire basho? Yes, that's what has been reported here in the past. He might even miss Haru depending on how his recovery is going from what it sounds like.

krindel 675 Posted January 10, 2016 6 months of treatment and Tokitenku is still planning on continuing? Don't know what the medical plan is for oyakata, but its possible that everyone involved feels he might be better off taking his medical treatment as an "active" rikishi. Chiyootori just has the worst of luck when it comes to the timing of his being in makuuchi and getting injured. Hopefully he'll be ready when he's in the juryo next basho. Gurowake 4,107 Posted January 11, 2016 Despite all the hullabaloo over Tsugaruumi's minor change of shikona, he is listed as having lost by default in his first match on Day 2 on the NSK results page.
WAKATAKE 2,671 Posted January 11, 2016 According to Kokonoe Oyakata, they will be monitoring Chiyootori's status, a mid-basho return is not out of the question.
