Kintamayama 45,503 Posted February 2, 2016 (edited) "Excuse me, do you have wifi here?" "Pad Thai? Yes we have many!!" "No, Wifi. Do you have Wifi here?" "Why buy? Because good tee-shirts sir!!" "I need to connect to the internet to announce the GTB game for Haru.." "Sir, you say many words but not all in English. Elephant ride? Coconut milk? Gyoza? Tom Yam?" "Now YOU are saying many words but not all in English.. Wifi? I want to send a message.." "Oh, you like massage?? With sad ending?" "Sad ending? What the heck is that?" "You cry because no kachikoshi.." "Huh?? Kachiko.. how do you..Wha the?? You are a sumo fan?" "Suntan? Tee-shirt with elephant eating banana?' That was more or less me trying to invite everyone to GTB from Ko Samui in Thailand, which isn't that cold after all.. Please accept this humble yet adamant invitation to the "Guess the Banzuke" game. Rules: Guess the Banzuke. Simple. You get two points for a bulls-eye and one point for just getting the rank right. You get no points for eating coconuts without chewing. Tiebreakers - Most total guesses, then, we check the banzuke backwards - getting the lower half right will be more important now. The most correct guesses in the last ten places will win the tiebreaker. If still tied , we go up a ranking at a time like a penalty shootout. Then we see if that fantastic pizza joint on the Chaweng is still there (It isn't..).It's up to you to check if you are on the list of entries. It's going to be your fault if you don't notice that your entry went missing in the Internet void. No late entries will be accepted . kuroimori 1,634 Posted February 3, 2016 Just entered my first safety try as #23 of GTB Haru 2016 entrants. Feels very smooth until M9 with yet another edition of the crucial decision: Are they going to overpromote Juryo promotees or lower Maegashira KK rikishi...? Tamaikazuchi 4 Posted February 12, 2016 Just did my first entry in a few years. Kuroimori was right, M9 down was a struggle.
Sumozumo 240 Posted February 21, 2016 Threw in my lot. It was strangely calming to submit this list.

Sumozumo 240 Posted February 28, 2016 (edited) I'm on the entered players list but can't find my entry email. Whops. Probably mistyped. Few more days won't hurt... Edit: Nope, into my spam folder, because google detected 'Lithuanian' as language content, a fraudulent language I guess. Kintamayama 45,503 Posted February 29, 2016 And the results are in. When the papers say something, it's a something. Lesson learned I hope.. winner? Pitinosato for the first time with a 4 point margin. Congratulations and jubilations!! Cliff! Two newcomers, did not do too well. Milestones: Kasamatsuri- 70th basho Ketsukai-60th basho Chiyonosawa- 40th basho To see how you did.. Thanks for playing, and as usual, special thanks to Andoreasu for doing all the work and Doitsuyama for the brains. And now, on with the Ba-show!!
Feginowaka 53 Posted February 29, 2016 (edited) I like the new ranking:1. Asashosakari 2. Gooner 3. Feginowaka Looks like an alltime-ranking, but hey, there is an error in this list... The real ranking is 10 places higher: 11. Asa 12. Goo 13. Fegi (Sigh...) This also means an end of our current (record-breaking) Top10-streak (First prize...) (Sad goodbyes...) Asashosakari 19,648 Posted February 29, 2016 (edited) That 3-12 last year was always going to kill my top-10 ranking eventually... At least leader Chiyonosawa has come back to Earth as well with "only" 9-6 - his recent run of 1st, 3rd, 4th, 3rd was just insane. It's certainly a weird top 10 list right now, though, with nobody on it having more than one career yusho. Edited February 29, 2016 by Asashosakari
Pitinosato 120 Posted February 29, 2016 I really won ???? (Nodding yes...) I never thought I will ever win a GTB-Basho !!! (Holiday feeling...) I can't see the results (here in the Office) But I was stunned when I compared the new Banzuke with my Entry ! I never ever had approximately so much Points ! What a Day !!!! (Yusho winner...) Gurowake 4,100 Posted February 29, 2016 The "winning guess" link goes to Pitinosato's entry from last basho, not this one.
Asashosakari 19,648 Posted February 29, 2016 The "winning guess" link goes to Pitinosato's entry from last basho, not this one. That's Yubinhaad's winning entry from last time, somehow only the header was changed.
Yubinhaad 11,761 Posted March 2, 2016 The 80th basho under the ranking system brings four changes to the Top Ten ranks and an end to the longest ongoing Green Streaks (shown here). Long-term residents Gooner, Asashosakari, Feginowaka and Okisuruga all drop out, to be replaced by three returnees and a newcomer. Momijibasi is back in the green ranks for the first time since 2014 Hatsu, and in third place to equal his highest career rank too. Kuroimori returns after a year out of the top ten and reaches a new high of fourth place, while Smoczayama bounces back in after just one basho out. Finally, Pitinosato can celebrate both his first GTB yusho and his Top Ten debut too. Congratulations! Feginowaka becomes the first player to surpass 5,000 points, while Asashosakari and Andoreasu are the eighth and ninth to surpass 4,000.
Doitsuyama 1,192 Posted March 4, 2016 Sorry for being late, but the GTB archive is up to date now. Here are the selection stats, interesting as always. Only 8 had Akiseyama on his correct rank. According to our experts Hidenoumi and Sokokurai were rather unlucky while Toyohibiki and Amuru had the most banzuke luck.
Gurowake 4,100 Posted March 4, 2016 I understand what you're saying about luck, but I don't think where people end up in reality in relation to where people think they will end up is what most people consider "banzuke luck". If everyone had followed the plurality on Toyohibiki and realized he was the most reasonable pick for M9e, he wouldn't have had any less banzuke luck by actually being placed there; the banzuke luck was the fact that he was the most reasonable pick for a spot that would be a huge over-promotion for him. From the stats one could say that Osunaarashi had "bad luck" in that most people picked him to stay in Makuuchi but he ended up in Juryo, whereas he's actually quite lucky that there was even a glimmer of hope that he'd stay and thus be at the top spot of Juryo when demoted since he probably would normally fall to J2-3. Sorry for being nit-picky on terminology when I know exactly what you mean.
Gurowake 4,100 Posted March 4, 2016 Is there a detailed explanation of the GTB ranking system somewhere? I can't find anything more than a vague description of how it works. This is the best I can make of it given a couple hours of looking at the most recent ranking: Your score for each basho is your entry points' percent of the winning score. The most recent basho score is multiplied by 1.4, the second most recent by 1.15, the next 2 by 1 (but maybe 1.0175), the next by something around .85 (maybe .84175), and the 6th by something close to .7 (might be 1/1.4 = .714286, which suggests something else for the previous one, but nothing obvious works). You get one Kosho basho after each entry; further lack of entries until the next entry are scored as 0. There might be some additional changes to the score depending on what rank you get; it looks like the lowest scores each basho are multiplied by something like .995 (subtract a half percent basically), while there are clearly bonuses for being near the top of the scoreboard. Because of these rank-based adjustments, I can't really say for sure if my multipliers are right, but they do a good job of getting close to the score shown and are lower when the players have done well, and higher when they haven't. Gurowake 4,100 Posted March 5, 2016 Heh, I even saw that before and totally forgot about it. I guess the fact that it uses the average score and not the top score as the basis for allocating points didn't make a particularly big impression; for some reason I 100% sure it was based on the highest score each time.
