Nagoya 2016 Videos- Promo and Days 1-15

Recommended Posts

Stumbling upon a video of yours is how I first came to follow sumo. I am sure I am not alone in this. I will miss your videos- even if you weren't watching the sumo with me, I felt like I watched it with you. Enjoy your YouTube retirement, and all the stress-free Pad Thai evenings. Uploader-yokozuna don't get a pillar with their name engraved on it in the Hachiman shrine, but they do get an envelope magnetised to my fridge (pic related).

Thank you for your services to sumo, foreign sumo fans, and educating the people on what is the right way to spell shikona in English.

Kinta

Thanks so much for your efforts over the years. Having access to you and Araibira's videos rekindled my passion for the sport. So much so that I now travel to Japan just to see Sumo. You sir, are a giant amongst men. Thanks for everything!

Moti, thank you so much for all the great vidz and all your hard work. Would you have a link for the NHK daily Hon Basho updates?

They will most probably be put up on this thread when they materialize.

My reintroduction to sumo began with your videos, and I'm not sure I'd have the same passion for it were it not for your wonderful updates. Thank you so much for everything.

And while I'm glad the NHK's sumo coverage is finally moving into the new era, I do wonder - will they be able to replicate the sweeping success of your halftime shows?

I will miss owls, lousy games with words, the sweeping half time shows that Motemakura mentioned and I will keep fond memories of font day...

A musician from Israel was for many years my lifeline to sumo. An incredible story made possible by the internet. Thank you so much for your work. Even if video quality will improve, your comments wil be missed.

תודה

oh man. This breaks my heart. I like most people came to know about sumo through your videos. You have built a community; hopefully you continue to make some sort of commentary, your mind is just spectacular.

When Araibira stopped uploading I was relatively new to sumo (I guess I still am, but I shall gambarize and take everything on a day by day basis and will try to do my own brand of posting) and it was, besides wrestling and manga, the only thing that kept me kinda sane far away from my home, since I lived in Berlin at the time.

I just moved back home and was super sad to see that my new found hobby vanished. But then I found out about your channel. Or I realited that I still could watch your stuff, now that I think about it I read the forum at the time so I was most likely aware of your channel :D

Point is, thank you so much for providing us with your videos, sumo really grew on me on the last 2 1/2 years and you were a big contribution to that fact. A heartfelt thank you from Germany to Israel :)

I feel like you need a lifetime achievement award. You have been a pillar of sumo coverage for the world outside Japan, and no amount of HD can make the NHK coverage live up to yours!

It was tough to click "like this" for your posting, Mori, as I'm a bit conflicted. You did all of us sumo fans a huge favour for so many basho, providing coverage with zest, zeal and wit. I'm sure NHK will provide the action, but I doubt that their recaps will hold a candle to yours. Thank you for all the time, effort and love you put into your recaps.

The NHK coverage will be HD and that will be great, but there will be no opinions spoken except for boringly correct ones, no subsidiary facts offered except those directly connected to the subject matter, no dancing girls, no birds of prey, no fonts, no deliberate mistakes, no accidental mistakes, no steak, no oshiwashi, no slippiotoshi, no blood sweat or tears expended in the making of the programme and, worst of all, no heart.

Wow. That was nice. Thanks.

There were dancing girls one time? Before my time, I guess.

I can only second all the above but I understand that it was simply a lot of work, especially when the source(s) were shaky.

I am curious to try the new HD recaps -especially with slow motion replays, but just the thought that it might be commented by such guys like Hiro Morita just makes me cringe...

As for the funny comments, they don't need to be gone for sure.

How about we start something like a "Daily Bout Commentary - Kintamayama Style!" thread, where everybody can share funny match summaries, awkward metaphors and other non-formal conversations...

We need to make this exist.

Enjoy your 'retirement' Kintamayama and thank you for everything you've brought.

I ain't gonna miss you, though, cos you're still bringing things here and I can't see you stopping that any time soon!

And if you ever feel like adding subtitles to the forthcoming NHK recap, please give in to the urge!

Moti, thanks for all you've done these many years. It won't ever be the same without your colorful videos. Thank you for your great service for all of us fans, especially many who don't get the luxury to be in Japan.

Top effort for so long bringing sumo in your distinctive style Kinta.

The 23 mins will cover only last 10 bouts plus an exceptional bout on occasions, unusual kimarite etc.

NHK have indicated they want it straight and informative so there will be no Kinta isms and there shouldn't be as this style is unique.

It could have been on the air years earlier but there were some contract issues that had to be resolved.

@Kintamayama:

What does this sentence from the sumo mailing list mean?

"And from Moti Dichne, each day's program (in English, BTW) will be put on YouTube by NHK World. Look for it starting Sunday!"

Please tell me it means official HD footage on NHKs youtube channel with your commentary. Or is it wrong and should spell "...Moti Dichne: Each day's program..."

The latter is correct- I have nothing to do with the NHK broadcast, regretfully..

That is too bad because with your help it would be 1,000% better! As others have said, your humor and insight will be missed. Enjoy your vacation. I am not going to say retirement because of how wacky the NSK is when it comes to providing video for those who can't watch sumo in Japan..... :-O
