Nagoya 2016 Videos- Promo and Days 1-15

Recommended Posts

My guess is that the replays will begin with Shodai vs Ikioi on Day 1.

So there will not be a highlights package including first 10 bouts unless something special happens in earlier bouts.

Why don't a full makuuchi and juryo highlights.. it will be just the minimum requirement for a sumo fan...

By the way, will the sumodb video archive work just as usual?

Time constraints and contract deal. Only 23 mins segment.

I probably wouldn't have gotten into sumo without Moti's videos, as many others have said before.

Not only me, but it revived interest in sumo at my office. It was pretty tricky to tell Japanese guys that I work with the name of the channel, but it soon spread. Since they often work many days in row until 10pm, they will sure miss having VODs to binge watch during some downtime or when the bucho goes out early.

Anyway I, like others will continue to find ways to watch. But I'll miss the days of people running up to me after meetings with 'Neckless' written in a notebook and a bunch of questions about English.

Enjoy watching the basho with us, without expending a bunch of effort and time. I hope Mark Buckton sends you some sweets.

Nothing to do with Mark. NHK is supposedly giving us all we need and in HD as well. I'll keep a close look. If it isn't what we hope it will be , well, we shall see..

Bit late to this topic, but: Thank you so much for everything, Kintamayama! (I am not worthy...)

You got me into sumo and made me a big fan.

I was hoping you'd go on making videos "forever" but I had the feeling your retirement wouldn't be far away, so I'm sad but not surprised (Weeping...)

The makuuchi zen-torikumi Japanese daily NHK digest is also about 23min - they should have simply used that with English commentary.

I checked the NHK World Grand Sumo homepage and am a bit uncertain if there will really be daily HD video highlights.

The Video on Demand option might only be provided on Day 1, 8 & 15.

Could this mean that the daily Makuuchi video digest will only be aired on NHK World 4 times a day?

I worried about this too. And the depressing statement as well: "Next broadcast 2 hours 36 minutes"...

Next broadcast is on in 5 min.!

...Ok, it's over. I think I could get used to it; didn't care much for the commentary though, turned down the volume a bit.

Video quality is good.

They put in two minutes about Iceland's geology at the beginning XD

"Hakuho is closing in on 1000 career victories. He is just 13 wins shy of the century mark." Oy.

Well the NHK is not watch any time, you have to tune in to a, "live" internet broadcast and I can't do that with my life. Why can't they just post a video of the highlights people can watch when they have time?? Or does it just keep going, ends and starts again? I will see. If not I guess it's up to Jason (who only posts a few matches he likes) and Andy Coulston on Vimeo who is good but not always there and often late.

Ok, I got it now. 4 daily live shows- 19:30/01:30/7:30/11:30 JST. No VOD yet, which means you can only watch it live when it's streaming at http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/sumo/

Hmmmm...

Seems that this schedule is one hour off. It is now published as 18:30 / 0:30 / 6:30 / 10:30 JST.

Yeah I guess so, I just saw the last three matches and now I'm screwed, I can't watch at these times. I know of Andy Coulston on Vimeo but he isn't always reliable.

Pretty sure it's neither; the shown times are local to the website user, not JST.

This schedule is probably adjusted according to your computer. I have a different one here.

Did you miss the gyoji referee and the oshidashi push out ? I certainly didn't.

Both NHK World and NHK Premium show their sumo digests at the same time. There is no reason to put all makuuchi bouts in both of them if the former is free and the latter is not. I for one, I would cancel my NHK subscription if NHK world showed all bouts.

There are excellent links to today's bouts on the other video thread. Everything is up there and available all the time with great quality. NHK thing is rather limited.

Anyway, the broadcast is pretty good for what it is - covered the last 12 bouts (well, 11 + Kaisei's fusensho) and two earlier ones, so about two-thirds of the makuuchi torikumi. Nice amount of slomo replays, as one would expect from an NHK production. I'm not a fan of Hiro Morita's commentary style as I've said before, so for me that's a negative, but I guess for the average fan this ought to be a decent enough offering. But yeah, complete VOD availability would be much preferred to the current four-broadcasts-per-day plan (and apparently later VOD'ing of the Day 1/8/15 shows).

Edit:

Did you miss the gyoji referee and the oshidashi push out ? I certainly didn't.

Today augmented with the ozeki-champion and the yokozuna-grand-champion, too. Edited by Asashosakari

Thank you Moti. Your video editing is unsurpassed. What software do you use? How long does it take to make these videos? If we can get 15 volunteers, we could assign one person each day to make a video like yours.
