Nagoya 2016 Rikishi Status - FINAL

According to information on the the NSK website at this time, the following rikishi will be absent on day 1 of the 2016 Nagoya basho. Check back later in case there are any updates (or the NSK is late in releasing the news) Information related to the remaining divisions should be available in about 24 hours.

Both rikishi are recovering from surgery for achilles tendon injuries. Some info about that is here.

I won't be able to update this thread during the basho, but I've started it so other people can.

I didn't think Aminishiki would recover and be ready for the Nagoya basho given his injury. This may be the beginning of the end for both Aminishiki & Toyonoshima. Their injuries are major one at their age.

Both talented and entertaining rikishi...it would be sad to see their chonmage cut, but of course one can't do combat sports forever. But best of luck to them both and wishing a speedy recovery, whatever else might happen.

Osunaarashi has withdrawn from the tournament according to the NSK website. As with Kakuryu's post-torikumi withdrawal last year, he is still on the Day 1 torikumi, but the Day 2 torikumi was changed.

No updates on the lower divisions yet; perhaps they're still working out the consequences of Osunaarashi's withdrawal.

Kakuryu is not injured this basho. I never meant to imply that he was. I meant to relate Osunaarashi's withdrawal timing to Kakuryu's last year, and relate the fact that similarly the torikumi for Day 2 but not Day 1 was changed.

What should be mentioned is that Osu's withdrawal comes too late for the NSK to make changes to the day 1 matches, meaning that Osu will not go 0-0-15 for the basho. Meaning whoever he was supposed to face for day 1 will get the freebie. From day two he will be shown as withdrawn. What Gurowake tried to say was that Kakuryu ended up in the same situation LAST YEAR when he withdrew from a basho but not in a timely fashion enough to avoid the fusenpai.

It wasn't meant to. It was meant to clarify what I meant as someone had been confused with what I said even though I thought it was perfectly clear initially. I accept full responsibility for making people think Kakuryu was somehow withdrawing from the tournament despite there being no official announcement. You may proceed to withhold all of my pay that I was to accrue for making these announcements. I will accept 30 lashes as well in penance.

(For reference for those who also want to judge my nefarious deed and see what punishment I deserve: I edited in "last year" into the post in question)

In more seriousness, it would be far more polite of you to say "Thank you for correcting the misunderstanding." than taking a shot at my character for this minor slip-up that was more a mistake in forgetting that not everyone has been following Sumo forever (or has my memory). Being that I've only followed Sumo for a couple years, my frame of reference tends to be that anything that I remember anyone else interested would have to remember as well.

48 rikishi kyujo... Some kind of record maybe?

And among them some pretty talented wrestlers (or at least potential prospects):

Mongolian Kiribayama (20) is on a career-high Ms30 in his eighth basho.

Mitsuuchi (20) was off to a very promising start (three consecutive 6-1 records) before slowing down in the last two tournaments.

Kotokumazoe (19) started in the large Haru class, and finished 6-1 in his debut (which is often a sign of future sekitorihood).

Sakaguchi (16) also started in Haru. Starting a career with a 5-2 record is not too shabby in that age. A similar case can be made for Sekino who started 4-3, and is only 15.

Not really. The last year has seen significant absences in jonokuchi in every basho:

2015.09: 10/51 (+1 Day 1 withdrawal by a scheduled rikishi)

2015.11: 10/48

2016.01: 10/45

2016.03: 8/45 (+1 Day 1)

2016.05: 11/62 (+1 Day 1)

Percentage-wise the recent stand-out is 2012.09 with 11/41, and 12 absences in total were already seen in 2015.05 (12/56, although two of those rikishi then joined the basho on Day 3).

Yeah, it's been completely normal for a very large portion of Jonokuchi to withdraw from the start of the tournament. Many of them will come back for one bout Day 13-15.

First a non-kyujo report - after over a year out of action, I understand that banzuke-gai Ikeru is set to participate in maezumo this basho! (Clapping wildly...)

Kaiho suffered a knee injury during keiko last weekend. It didn't require surgery or hospital treatment, and it's possible that he'll enter the basho later.

Daiyushi actually retired after the Haru basho but simply wasn't on the official list then.

Tokuda is suffering from a lower back problem.

Masuminoru has some strapping on his right hand/wrist, possibly that injury happened in the Chiganoura car crash last month. However, he is involved in keiko at the heya's Nagoya lodgings so perhaps he will also be a late entry in the basho.
