Nagoya 2016 Rikishi Status - FINAL

Recommended Posts

Being an Osunaarashi fan is frustrating sometimes...

Totally agree, I was also looking forward to see a post-ramadan version of his.

It is really sad because he was scheduled to fight his buddy Terunofuji on Day 2 (the SumoDB still has the pre Osu kyujo matchups).

The last time these two met on a Honbasho was Kyushu 2015...

special question for Kintamayama: Do you have any informations about Homarenishiki's and Masunoyama's withdrawals ?

Homarenishiki-pass.

Masunoyama-injured again, AFAIK. Maybe someone knows better.

48 rikishi kyujo... Some kind of record maybe?

And among them some pretty talented wrestlers (or at least potential prospects):

Mongolian Kiribayama (20) is on a career-high Ms30 in his eighth basho.

Mitsuuchi (20) was off to a very promising start (three consecutive 6-1 records) before slowing down in the last two tournaments.

Kotokumazoe (19) started in the large Haru class, and finished 6-1 in his debut (which is often a sign of future sekitorihood).

Sakaguchi (16) also started in Haru. Starting a career with a 5-2 record is not too shabby in that age. A similar case can be made for Sekino who started 4-3, and is only 15.

And unfortunately Chiyonoumi (23) is out for the third basho in a row... :-(

Masunoyama looks another 4 months but he wants to come back sooner.

Wasn't Masunoyama involved in the car accident?

Is he done for good or something? He never had a chance to get up to other people his age.

Can someone remind me please who Goeido was fighting last basho, when he got his eye socket injury?

Editing post post won't cover up your poor attention to detail.

Your inablility to read a sufficient clear english sentence is astonishing.

I'm not a native english speaker but had no difficulties grokking the meaning of gurowake's post.

From elsewhere:

In the meantime Nishikido has relieved himself of his judging duties and will be working as head of the venue entrances, "due to health reasons." "I am OK but I don't want to be a bother to anyone.." said the recovering Oyakata.

This has been in effect since Day 1; Sendagawa (ex-Toki) is substituting for him in the judging rotation.

Asahinishiki was running a fever and has since been diagnosed with chicken pox. Hopefully will be able to shake it off and enter the basho later.

Daiyushi actually retired after the Haru basho but simply wasn't on the official list then.

Another not-yet-official retirement among the Jonokuchi withdrawal list is apparently Ishikawa.

Having chicken pox as an adult is really nasty. I had it when I was 36 and I was in bed for 3 weeks, and I'm not the stay in bed type! It's the most ill I've ever been.

Most people get it as kids, and it's a doddle for them. My 18-month-old daughter, who gave me it, was merely a bit subdued for a couple of days...

Not sure when it was posted, but it was there on the NSK website when I decided to check an hour ahead of time:

West Yokozuna Kakuryu (Izutsu Beya)

has withdrawn the 4th day of the July Tournament.

http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/sports/sumo/20160713-OYT1T50026.html

Headline says a lumbar disk injury, 2 weeks recovery.

My best guess at the rest of the information in the article about him is that according to reports, he was complaining about his back (had a funny feeling or something) before the basho. The remainder of the article is history and fluff.

Kakuryuu injured his left ankle as well as his back. "The lower back pain is from before the basho. I cannot dig in. I somehow managed to pull through till now," he explained. He also injured his left ankle in yesterday's bout according to his Oyakata. "It's a real shame, but he has no choice but to look out for his future and heal properly. " said Izutsu Oyakata. Kakuryuu is the 4th kyujo in Makuuchi this basho.

Day 5 withdrawals:

East Jonokuchi #16 Asahinishiki

My guess is Asahinishiki was attempting to come back tomorrow and got put in for a bout, but decided to forego it.

You've misread the listing; he's returning to competition on Day 5.
