Video Streaming - General Information

Recommended Posts

During each basho, some of the matches are streamed live via the internet.  The availability of these match streams and their providers has been very tumultuous for the last 2-3 years. This topic was started in Honbasho Talk in January 2014 to track the vicissitudes of the streaming for the Hatsu basho.  All hell broke loose, and there are now over 1000 posts in that topic covering 42 pages. Over 90% of the info in the topic is no longer viable.  The time has come to close and lock the old topic (moderators?) and start this new one in Ozumo Discussions.

There are now at least 2 providers for internationally available streaming.  Both broadcast the NHK TV coverage of the makuuchi division matches, and both are free.  Live Sumo coverage starts daily at about 4 PM Japan Standard Time and continues through the final match. There are multi-angle camera views and replays shown for most of the matches.

Vaughn Live provides coverage through 2 links: NHK and Sherming22.  The content of both is identical.  The Sherming link includes an active online chat capability.  The commentary is in Japanese. There is about a 4 minute delay in the showing of the stream.

UBS is a Mongolian service providing the NHK video. The commentary is in Mongolian. Video quality is good, but not as good as Vaughn's. There is only a few seconds delay in the stream coverage. Occasionally, NHK will preempt Sumo coverage for breaking news events.  When this happens, UBS will still show the Sumo matches.

Although not internet streaming, TV Japan provides the NHK programming internationally via a limited number of TV cable services. Some cables provide the English Sumo commentary along with the video.  TV Japan is normally a premium service at a nominal extra charge.

Softbank is a new service that supposedly provides streaming of matches for ALL divisions.  It is available at a moderate fee, but, so far, it is only known to be available in Japan. As additional information becomes available, it will be included here.

There are other limited access services available which several individuals use to generate Utube videos of the matches which become available on the forum shortly after the day's activity is complete.  Access to these services is VERY privately held.  Past experience has shown that when these sources become publicly known, they are almost immediately shut down due to copyright infringements.  Don't ask about them. Just enjoy the results that may become available.

Additional information is forthcoming.

As in the past, there will probably be a Honbasho Talk topic started for each basho with streaming details for that basho.

Similar to the old Niji, there are 8 Japanese channels accessible via Vaughn.  There are 2 usable links for each channel.  The Sherming links all have live chat activated. It is not active on the other link.  The 8 channels are:

Thank you Asojima for the info. Short and sweet. Bumpkin.

Don't forget the matches will start 30 minutes sooner on day 15.

UBS requires a login to view the coverage.  In the main box, there is a Mongolian sentence with 2 white boxes at the end.  The first box is for login.  The second box is for registration.  To register for use, pick the registration box.  The next display wants an Email address, then a password, then a repeat of the password.  Next is a box to choose "allow service", and then there is a red box to click to register.  You should get a Mongolian Email with a line to click to confirm your registration.  When you login, you should get a form with the Email address and password filled in.  If not, enter them in the 2 boxes.  Pick the first red box below the password to complete the login.

Edit: There is an alternate site for viewing UBS. It does not require a sign up, and the video may be slightly cleaner.

I have received "Server at Capacity, Try Later" notices on other Vaughn sites.  If enough of us use it for sumo, it may become a problem.  If so, there are 2 options.  1. Use UBS as a backup.  2. Purchase the VIP Gold option for about US$15.00 a month to get priority service during heavy use time.

Vaughn/Sherming22 was requiring me to create an account to go into the chat area. But it wouldn't let me use my shikona as a username, and their system won't let you change your username for the chatroom (just the format of the username). Yet I could see people in the chatroom with their shikona (hi Asojima!)  What am I missing?  (using the free version)

No problems with the VIP paid option, but I remember IM functioning when I was using the free option. Sorry not to be of more help. Perhaps Asojima can tell you more.

I am using the free (non-VIP) approach, and had no problem getting started.  They want a valid Email address, a username (shikona?), and a password.  The password can be anything you like. One username fits all of their sites.

Username = Shikona. Every time I entered "Fukurou" it said it wasn't a valid username. I couldn't find any rules about usernames or otherwise find anything to tell me why it wasn't a valid username. Very frustrating.

It was requiring 3 things - username, email, password. If I didn't supply all 3, it wasn't valid.

Were you possibly entering your shikona in the space where they wanted an Email address?

It's me that was logged in and everything to UBS but sumo wasn't on the programme, whatever I did. It was a non-problem anyway because I watched on Sherming. Thanks for the answers word20.

(for Vaughn/Sherming) No, it's clearly marked. When creating an account, Account is the top box, email the 2nd box, then 2 boxes for entering your password twice, and then 2 terms & conditions check boxes. After you create the account, whenever you sign-in Account has become Username.

(for UBS) I left Sherming and went to UBS, which was working fine after login. I never pay much attention to the scheduled times, just scroll down to the different channels listed and click on the UBS banner. That usually works fine.

It takes me straight to UBS when I log in, but your tip about not paying attention to their schedule is a good one. Thank you!

I don't know where it took me after login (wasn't paying attention), but I was on sumo after clicking on the UBS banner.

I logged in early, just looked at the schedule and thought 'bugger this'. Patience pays.:)

My dirty mind could imagine a couple of reasons why "Fukurou" may be blacklisted.

I just had a thought. I had been watching on Sherming 777, which has been closed for 'copyright reasons', and I'd set Google to memorise my password. Then this happened a couple of days ago when I went to fork out for VIP status. When I saw that Sherming 777 was taken down I closed the tab, came back here and clicked on Asojima's link to Sherming 22 and when I clicked to log on, my username egparis18 was still there, but the site asked me for my password, even though I'd recorded it on Google. I'd forgotten it of course, so I reset it and logged on no problem. Perhaps you should try resetting your password. Otherwise just cut your losses and create a new account with a new username and everything.
