Otokonoyama 2,735 Posted July 31, 2004 I'd like to visit for the basho too. A tour'd be great as well. Are you the guide, or is it one of the more "official" tours you mentioned in another thread?
Mark Buckton 1 Posted August 1, 2004 I'd like to visit for the basho too. A tour'd be great as well. Are you the guide, or is it one of the more "official" tours you mentioned in another thread? The guide is moi. Although an English version for the internal tour of the Kokugikan is under negotiation / consideration nothing will be in place by September. Outside, and in the general Ryogoku area the your is at this time wholly unofficial, free of course and 110% informal. 2 routes haved been reccied (is that a word) several times and can be provisionally described simply as the Northern Tour & the Southern Tour. The Northern Tour will include (in order) - Azumazeki, Takasago, Kataonami, Hakkaku, Nishikidio as well as Yokoami Memorial Park and the Yasuda Gardens. (possible removal of the last 2 places could include Magaki but would increas walking time / distance). this will start at Asakusa station. The Southern is shorter, starting at Ryogoku station and will include Tokitsukaze, Oshima, Dewanoumi, Izutsu, Kasukano, Michinoku, Eko-in and the stone of strength and perhaps Nishonoseki if anyone has a particular reason. Most of the places are in the photos I have been posting recently.

Mark Buckton 1 Posted August 1, 2004 Adachi-would we just be walking by these places, or actually stopping in (for what?)....I'm interested... Hopefully stopping in at one place. Probably aiming at Takasago or Hakkaku on 'northern' or at Oshima or Tokitsukaze on southern. Depends on the stables themselves of course and will always involve calls the day before by myself to see if a. they have keiko and b. they are open for viewing. B-) Nothing formal. Yokoami - after 9am - definitely worth a brief stop even though it isn't sumo connected it is the site of a museum dedicated to the event that cost 30-40000 dlives during Sept 1923 and also has the remains of 100000 from the firebombings of March 10/11 1945 (inc 2 sekitori IIRC). Tis but 6 or 7 mins from the Kokugikan but isn't that well known. (Eh?)
Itachiyama 119 Posted August 1, 2004 (edited) I would be interested in a meeting too, but I'm only in Ryogoku during the second half of the Basho. What about a common Chanko-nabe dinner somewhere in Sumida-ku? Edited August 1, 2004 by Itachiyama
Mark Buckton 1 Posted August 1, 2004 (edited) I would be interested in a meeting too, but I'm only in Ryogoku during the second half of the Basho. What about a common Chanko-nabe dinner somewhere in Sumida-ku? Sounds good if I am not off to a Senshuraku party. Waiting for details for Oitekaze just now. On the tour - shonichi ` 8am if anyone is up for it. Time because of keiko probabilities and also taking a while we'll get to the Kokugikan at about 9-9.30 if no keiko is to be seen. So, which one - north or south? If south - make it 8.30am Edited August 2, 2004 by Adachinoryu
