Asasekiryu intai

Recommended Posts

Press are reporting that former Sekiwake Asasekiryu, who was granted Japanese citizenship just recently, has retired and is now Nishikijima-oyakata. Unless there's been a stealthy change of ownership, he's borrowing that myoseki from Toyonoshima.

Not sure if we have a specific thread about citizenship, but it is also potentially relevant here. Asasekiryu has been granted Japanese citizenship and is therefore eligible to hold a myoseki, paving the way for him to stay in the Kyokai after intai.

I suppose that his taking Japanese citizenship screamed intai, (as in fact his sumo has been doing for a while) but it's still sad when a veteran packs up.

Actually I haven't seen pictures of him smiling for quite a while, so I suppose this might lift a weight off his shoulders.

Interestingly, the Kyokai site has him placed above the other oyakata who are borrowing myoseki. An error? A perk for being a former Sekiwake (the others are all ex-Maegashira)? Or maybe he really does own the Nishikijima myoseki?

Anyway, Nishikijima-oyakata's intai press conference was held earlier today. His most memorable basho was 2004 Haru, in which he won his first 12 bouts to stay in the leading group with stablemate Asashoryu. The Yokozuna went on to claim a zensho yusho, while Asasekiryu finished with a 13-2 jun-yusho and was awarded two sansho for his efforts. A few pictures in the box.

Spoiler

With Takasago-oyakata (former Ozeki Asashio) for the press conference.

Huh, that's a recent change. Over the weekend they had him listed last. (Can still be seen in the Google cache version from about 36 hours ago.)

I was surprised to catch a quick glimpse of him standing in the hanamichi yesterday on day 1 in the blue jacket.  Anyone else catch that?

Today he came up the stairs in Kokugikan next to me an was not out of breath like Nishikido and Musashimaru. (Ok, he had the operation) All people around spend him applause. He looks very good.
