Yubinhaad 11,718 Posted May 12, 2017 Press are reporting that former Sekiwake Asasekiryu, who was granted Japanese citizenship just recently, has retired and is now Nishikijima-oyakata. Unless there's been a stealthy change of ownership, he's borrowing that myoseki from Toyonoshima. On 21/04/2017 at 14:08, Yubinhaad said: Not sure if we have a specific thread about citizenship, but it is also potentially relevant here. Asasekiryu has been granted Japanese citizenship and is therefore eligible to hold a myoseki, paving the way for him to stay in the Kyokai after intai.
Naganoyama 5,939 Posted May 12, 2017 (edited) I suppose that his taking Japanese citizenship screamed intai, (as in fact his sumo has been doing for a while) but it's still sad when a veteran packs up. Actually I haven't seen pictures of him smiling for quite a while, so I suppose this might lift a weight off his shoulders. An error? A perk for being a former Sekiwake (the others are all ex-Maegashira)? Or maybe he really does own the Nishikijima myoseki? Anyway, Nishikijima-oyakata's intai press conference was held earlier today. His most memorable basho was 2004 Haru, in which he won his first 12 bouts to stay in the leading group with stablemate Asashoryu. The Yokozuna went on to claim a zensho yusho, while Asasekiryu finished with a 13-2 jun-yusho and was awarded two sansho for his efforts. A few pictures in the box. Spoiler With Takasago-oyakata (former Ozeki Asashio) for the press conference. While at Meitoku Gijuku high school with his later stablemate, Asashoryu. Serving as tachimochi for a dohyo-iri in 2008. And the picture posted by the Kyokai when announcing his retirement.

(Can still be seen in the Google cache version from about 36 hours ago.)
inhashi 2,363 Posted May 15, 2017 I was surprised to catch a quick glimpse of him standing in the hanamichi yesterday on day 1 in the blue jacket. Anyone else catch that?
