Pick The Yusho Winners Aki 2017

Recommended Posts

This is the thread for the Pick The Yusho Winners (PTYW) game for Aki 2017.

Until further notice, the game will run just as it has the last several times. I will compile the results and post them as best as I can on this thread.

This is a pre-basho game where each player selects a rikishi from each of 8 sections of the banzuke. The player earns points for each win, each kachikoshi, and each yusho earned by their team of 8 rikishi. The sections of the banzuke are these:

Sanyaku (Y through K)

Maegashira

Juryo

Upper Makushita (Ms1-15 ) (not including any tsukedashi of any rank)

Lower Makushita (Ms16-60 plus tsukedashi if any - including Ms 10 or 15)

Sandanme (plus tsukedashi if any)

Jonidan

Jonokuchi

That's it! Simple to understand, difficult to master. The hallmarks of any engaging game.

Please send your 8 selections to me before the beginning of action on Shonichi.

Itachi: nmatsuo@shaw.ca or by pm here at the forum

As a reminder, I am only a temporary caretaker of this game until Oshirokita can address the reconstruction of his system. All banzuke, website, and records updates will be on hold until then but the game itself and results postings will continue here on this thread.

Good luck with your picks.

Hey Itachi-zeki,

thanks a lot for providing this interesting  banzuke-spreading pre-basho game.

I will submit my picks by e-mail shortly and I truly hope that we get some more participants to join.

The standings after Day 2 are presented in the post above.

I wanted to provide the results through Day 4 but I can't easily separate the early division results from Day 5 so I prefer to send these - everyone will have the same number of bouts.

I've done the most time consuming part of the admin job so from now it will be easier to produce results. I want to provide a better experience for you this basho so I hope to present updated standings more frequently than in recent tournaments.

Thanks for your continued interest in this game. I wouldn't have continued without your persistence!

P.S. Profomisakari continues with his momentum from last basho!

Did you not get my message? My picks for you two games came in one message.

Or am I so bad that I am not on the table?!

Ok, yes, sorry, I missed your entry for this game and only input your Sandanme Game entry.

It's not that you're so bad. You had 7 points after Day 2, despite having selected Hakuho as your Yokozuna.
I gave you the default replacement which is Mukashi's choice. Not much better - it's Tochiozan (best record last basho among non-kyujo komusubi or higher rank).

You will find yourself in the standings properly when I post the Day 6 results (assuming I get that done before Day 7 results trickle in).

These are the standings after 6 days.

Profomisakari and Kuroimori are tied for the lead.
The most popular choices are also doing very well.

Here are the standings after Day 12.

It will be interesting to see if anyone can catch Kuroimori once some yusho points are awarded.

Considering the potential yusho winners ...

In Makuuchi, no one took Goeido.

In Juryo, co-leaders Kotoyuki and Aminishiki were selected by one player each (Flohru and Achiyama respectively).

In Makushita, Mitoryu was chosen by Kuroimori.

In Sandanme, about half the players chose Enho. I was the only one to select Tanabe.

No one selected any of the Jonidan leaders.

Almost all of us selected Jonokuchi leader, Shoji.

I have other business to attend to but I will try to get back on to present Sandanme standings later this evening (for those players who play both games).

Here are the standings after Day 14.

Kuroimori has a good lead and a chance to earn yusho points with Enho in Sandanme and Harumafuji in Makuuchi.

Torafujii has Masunoyama in Sandanme (3-4) so no chance to take advantage if Enho loses the playoff match. He does have Harumafuji though.
Tsubame has Enho but no other yusho contender.

Congratulations Kuroimori!
Torafujii takes the jun-yusho with the drone Genzai.

Thanks to everyone for playing!

Checking my records, I believe this was Kuroimori's first yusho in this game since I have been managing it.

Wow! It took a Whacky Aki Basho to claim the Yusho in picking the Yushoees.

Quite surprising to me as I thought I'd be dead in the water having picked Shodai (6-9) and Yago - as in "Ya Go straight back to Makushita?" (7-8).

A big thank you to Itachi, who keeps providing this treasure among the pre-basho games!

I can only recommend those who might just check the scores to join on in! It is the only game where you can pick 15 year old greenhorns in Jonokuchi as well as the GOAT (aka. Dai-Yokozuna Hakuho).
