So when was the last time that the previous basho yusho winner and jun-yusho winner went kyujo from day 1?

Twice before, it looks like. The 1991 case had more than one jun-yusho winner though.

Wow, who's gonna take advantage of Yokozuna's absences?   Lots of possibilities here.   Interesting.

That was my 2nd reaction. My 1st was "Wow" and my 3rd was sympathy for all the gamers madly scrambling to redo their various line-ups.

First time since abolishment of the kosho system in 2004 that 5 sekitori are kyujo on day 1 (ignoring the yaocho ban basho), last time was Hatsu 2003, y Musashimaru, o Chiyotaikai and Kaio, j Ushiomaru and Tomikaze. http://mainichi.jp/articles/20170909/k00/00m/050/090000c

And of course the first time since the start of Showa (= the start of proper records) that 3 yokozuna are kyujo from the start - called a katazukashi on the fans. http://mainichi.jp/articles/20170908/dde/041/050/057000c

That Hatsu 2003 basho is also the only other one in modern history with 3 full-kyujo Y/O in total.

... and I recommend Ura (KK or bust), Mitakeumi (11+ wins to set up the Ozeki run), Ishiura (see Ura), Hokutofuji (show me more!), Takayasu (yusho or bust), and on and on.  :-)

Not yet, but it's just been announced that he was granted Japanese citizenship on August 18th, so...

Edit - formally announced in the Official Gazette from that date:

And qualifies for a miyoseki, so probably retired.

It took me a little bit to wonder what the hell was going on with the first few lines.  They looked like total gibberish until I realized they were rotated a quarter turn.  I suppose someone fluent in Japanese would pick up on that right away, but me, I really didn't know what to think of the very strange symbols.

The absence of the three yokozuna must come as a relief to Goeido and Terunofuji - will make their scramble out of kadoban a bit easier (in theory).  This could be Takayasu's chance if he plays his cards right.  Mitakeumi is getting stronger with each basho though...

According to the Kataonami-beya website, 31-year-old Tamashinriki retired as of August 14th after a 15-year career. With his departure the heya now has only three rikishi.

Meanwhile, Shikihide-beya reports that Sakurayama has retired for personal reasons.

And as reported at the time, Hayate retired after the Nagoya basho but wasn't on the official list.
