I just watched Ryuden survive a leg trip attempt and it got me wondering about the power water in Juryo. Ryuden gave the water to Ishiura but Ishiura's aite did not have a rikishi to give him power water. Is that because the closet winner on the East side was 5 spots away and maybe had left already?

Yay, Aminishiki is back with a win, looking pretty good. Terunofuji looking bad + 2 yokozuna already down. Hakuho yusho.

Terunofuji has no oshi power whatsoever. His legs barely manage to keep him from being bowled over.
Takayasu gets a much needed win, but I'm not sure he will be able to keep his rank.
Goeido steamrollers over Takakeisho with ease. Quick and definitive, Ozeki power for sure.
Aminishiki is back and showing everyone that he doesn't have to resort to henkas. Can't he give some good tips to his heya mate Terunofuji?
Will this be Hakuho's basho?

I hate to say it, but as I was watching that bout I was thinking to myself "he will never now be Yokozuna". I hope I'm wrong but I think the injuries are insurmountable

This is a vintage injured Terunofuji loss. All the agility of a cinder-block at the tachiai, then conceding morozashi and failing to drive his man out via the double overhangs. 

Why does Terunofuji-Joukouryuu have to be a future makushita matchup? It could have been a present joi bout. (and if my grandmother had wheels she'd be a train, but I digress.)

That and he became Ozeki at the perfect time to. Now there are a bunch of very promising guys in sanyaku and the joi. Just the feeling of quality of these guys has improved markedly over the past year.

On the other hand, the Y/O injuries have come at the worst time...

Aminishiki looking very crafty nice win and my boy Kagayaki did his sumo all over takekaze. Hakuho handled geek nicely but geek looks strong hope he does well. The other top guys look like crap from the injuries...oye!

In the Onosho-Harumafuji bout I would give the credit to Onosho - nice effort and great timing of the slap down. I wouldn't call Harumafuji out yet.

Sorry if I echo some similar sentiments as others before, but here are a few thoughts I have after watching this first day:

Hakuho definitely looked good out there and should be the favorite to win (if he wasn't already of course).  Perhaps effects of an injury might slow him down a bit as we go along, but looks like his to lose right now.

Kisenosato still looked a bit hurt.  He got pushed around a fair bit, but perhaps he will be able to ease himself back into this at at least get around 10 wins.

My guy Harumafuji, already slipping up so to speak.  I think he will be fine and should be around Hakuho to hopefully add some weight to his bout with Hakuho, but his margain for error is gone already on day 1.

Goeido looked like a man possessed.  After a very small sample size on day 1, he would have to be second behind Hakuho.  Maybe the wacky Aki woke him up and he'll be able to finish this tournament off, or maybe after he gets around 10-1 he'll resort back to his old ways and finish up 11-4 again.  I'm optimistic he has learned a bit.

Takayasu still looks a little bit hurt, but 85% of his sumo is still better then at least 10 opponents I'd say.

Shoutout to my favorite Shohozan.  Slowly climbing his way up and a great win over a Sekiwake.  Always fun to watch and hope for a great showing!

Harumafuji is like a tornado, a force of nature, never know which way he's gonna swirl. Either gonna tear the house down, or fall flat on his face.

I sure hope there is no more long kuyjo by key rikishi.   The last basho was a dud b/c of that.  So far, Kak & Ura are out.   It will only take another 2 - 3 rikishi going out on injury for this basho to become uninteresting.

Even though Terunofuji is clearly injured, it's still not easy to push him back like Hokutofuji did in his match. Seems he's healthy and raring to get a KK at M3.

Onosho might win, but as a Komusubi he's not getting a kinbsoshi.

Aminishiki, the wily veteran. What a way to show he's back!

Hakuho taking care of business, and showing no signs of slowing down.

Kisenosato had that hidari-yotsu and then couldn't finish the job, he needs to really get on the ball if he wants to finish the basho.

Harumafuji once again slipping up on shonichi, hopefully this isn't a sign of things to come.

Something tells me that Terunofuji will not be coming back to ozeki, and will be in the same company as Dejima and Miyabiyama.

A little worried about Kisenosato. After pushing Tamawashi near the bales, his left hand was free to grab the belt, but he instead opted to continue pushing. Very rare technique for a guy who is a master of yotsu-zumo. I was happy to see Kise show some frustration after the bout, I do think he's getting closer to return to form. Really wish Tamawashi would stop with the tachiai games. He has to be the leader in mattas caused.

Takayasu looked a lot stronger than what it sounded like coming into the basho. Terunofuji on the other hand looks greatly hampered still. 

What a joy to see Aminishki win in his return to Makuuchi and with great form & execution.

Thank goodness Sumo is back! 14 more days of sumo goodness to round out the year. Lets sit back and enjoy friends!

Check the videos.  It was Kisenosato who was playing his typical stall tactic at the tachiai.

The first one from my view was absolutely Tamawashi. He was in ready position and Kise put his hands down and then charged to no reaction from Tamawashi. Which is why I believe Kise gave him the extra push when going up to him. The rest might have been retaliation mind games. Regardless, Tamawashi is involved in these situations far too often it seems.

I just have one question. Should Terunofuji face his juryo demotion by absence to regain total health and get back where he belongs????

Two bashos could be enougth, I think.
