New recruits for Natsu 2018

Recommended Posts

A bit unusual to have this thread that early, but the young guy plans to enter in May, really after graduation:

The next uchi-deshi for Futagoyama-oyakata to enter Fujishima-beya - or will he have his own heya by then and Souma Imai 今井颯真 (14, 176cm, 117kg) from Ogano town wants to wait till then?

Imai wants to become the 2nd sekitori from the town, Tsurugidake was the only one so far - he made Imai to start sumo in 1st year middle school - Imai was in the tennis club. That same year he met for the first time with Futagoyama, who had come to the town to meet his old heya-mate - and he came again and again to invite Imai to enter.

Imai of course wants to aim for yokozuna, the rikishi he longs to become like is Takayasu.

He may find a heya till Natsu - or maybe never: ガルダン・スフバト (??? Garudan Sufubato) (19, 180cm, 122kg),  the nephew of Takanoiwa wants to join ozumo, and till he finds a heya that accepts him - or he is forced to abandon hopes - he trains at Takanohana-beya. Not from Tottori Johoku high like his uncle, but just graduated from Saitama Sakae. The first son of the 2nd oldest elder brother of Takanoiwa, who is the 5th and last child.  He was 3rd with the team at the interhigh  (but wasn't active in the final tournament) and runner-up in his weight category at the Kanto championships. He'd like to quickly catch up with the 4 Saitama same year graduates who have already joined. http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2018/03/07/kiji/20180306s00005000226000c.html

How many heyas have an "opening" for a foreigner?

If I counted correctly, no less than 15 heya are without a foreigner at the moment.

But in the end, only a handful of them do potentially recruit foreigners because a) some simply do not accept them generally (Isenoumi comes to mind) or b) many are hesitant after the several scandals in recent years (yaocho, misconduct, violence, etc.).

I'm not saying there aren't any. :-)

Though I suppose Tatsunami doesn't have an opening.

Also c) some heya may already have made informal agreements with a future recruit who's currently still in school, so they're "off the market" already. And d) the wild-west days from 15 years ago are pretty much over, and nearly all stables are now trying to wait for a recruit with proven high potential rather than simply take on a speculative applicant. (Shikihide-oyakata being the notable recent exception with Furanshisu, but he's doing things differently in general.) I think they've all learned that it's better to leave the spot unclaimed for a while rather than take the first guy that asks, and then potentially be stuck with a career sandanme for 10 years.

Unless there are serious behaviour concerns with this guy, I think he'll find a stable. The Saitama Sakae background has to count for something.

Ex-Tsurugidake, MIYAMOTO Kazuteru has been running the family Ryokan in Chichibu, Saitama, as the twelfth generation owner.  A display of his kesho mawashi and other items on display there. (Sorry, maybe belongs in Former Rikishi activities).

Tatsunami-beya has a new recruit, Mutsumi Kawabata (川端 六満) from Nago city in Okinawa. He is a relative of Meisei.

Naruto-beya will have three new rikishi and a yobidashi in May. No individual details so far, but they're all in this picture it seems.

I always suspect Tatsunami to look like this if he'd ever give a full smile:

Tatsunami: I see a little of the dissipated look of Charlie Sheen.

I can't see these pictures for some reason. They are showing as broken links for me.

Any change since you posted that? They're showing fine for me, so it might have just been a temporary outage at the image host.

Yesterday evening I couldn't see them either, but now it's ok. Temporary outage at the image host seems to be a logical explanation.

The first deshi from his home prefecture Aomori for Wakanosato - from his hometown Hirosaki, graduated from the same middle school: Genta (K)Oyama 小山源太 (16) today left his hometown to enter Nishiiwa-beya. http://www.toonippo.co.jp/news_too/nto2018/20180420035102.asp

The first foreign high school yokozuna Amarsanaa plans to go to the new Futagoyama-beya. The oyakata: "He's during internship now, when it's over I think it (entering the heya) will happen."

He graduated from Tottori Johoku in March and apparently hasn't entered a university. Me may be still a kenshuusei-ryuugakusei - maybe now at some company, or as sumo instructor at his high school. But later articles indicate that Futagoyama really calls a trial in the heya kenshuu period.

The reading for him is Genta Oyama.

Nishiiwa-beya has two recruits this time, the other one is 18-year-old Koki Kosuge (小菅 広樹) from Takayasu's hometown Tsuchiura, Ibaraki prefecture.

Oyama (left) and Kosuge with the shisho. They weren't scouted but instead sought out the heya themselves and asked to join.
