Tsushida Amu (津志田 亜睦), Tairadate High School, Iwate

This 19-year-old has now joined Tokitsukaze-beya. Reported as 181cm, 130kg and specializing in oshi-zumo, he took 5th place at the inter-high championships last year, if I recall correctly he lost his quarter-final bout against eventual champion Amarsanaa.

12 have applied for the shindeshi-kensa on the 8th, with the focus on Tanaka Toranosuke, the grandson of Kurohimeyama.

Tanaka is a 4th generation rikishi: the father-in-law of Kurohimeyama was Kitanonada, Tanaka's father is former makushita Haguronada.

As he was in hospital in February with retinal detachment of the left eye (after keiko), Tanaka decided to leave high school after 1 year to join ozumo instead. His father was against it at first, but his son's passion made him change that. Granddad simply told him "Do shiko, teppo - the basics!" - and he also recommended Sakaigawa-beya to his grandson.

Genta Oyama.

Nishiiwa-beya has two recruits this time, the other one is 18-year-old Koki Kosuge (小菅 広樹) from Takayasu's hometown Tsuchiura, Ibaraki prefecture.

Oyama (left) and Kosuge with the shisho. They weren't scouted but instead sought out the heya themselves and asked to join.

The 2 for Nishiiwa-beya both had to drink 2l of water before the check to reach the required 67kg minimum weight. http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20180508-OHT1T50093.html

A bit unusual to have this thread that early, but the young guy plans to enter in May

The next uchi-deshi for Futagoyama-oyakata to enter Fujishima-beya - or will he have his own heya by then and Souma Imai 今井颯真 (14, 176cm, 117kg) from Ogano town wants to wait till then?

Imai wants to become the 2nd sekitori from the town, Tsurugidake was the only one so far - he made Imai to start sumo in 1st year middle school - Imai was in the tennis club. That same year he met for the first time with Futagoyama, who had come to the town to meet his old heya-mate - and he came again and again to invite Imai to enter.

Imai of course wants to aim for yokozuna, the rikishi he longs to become like is Takayasu.

From left:

22-year-old Takashi? Fujishima (藤島 樹) from Mutsu, Aomori prefecture. He'll need some kind of shikona change right off the bat.

19-year-old Hiroki Mukaida (向田 浩基) from Awaji, Hyogo prefecture.

16-year-old Yasuto? Kawamura (川村 泰斗) from Suzuka, Mie prefecture.

The heya's new yobidashi Kenta is 15 and from Sakai, Osaka prefecture. Not sure we'll actually see him this basho, I read on a blog that he'll officially join as of June 1st. Have to wait and see on that.

Imai will also need a shikona change. Going purely by this shot of the heya ranking boards (third panel from the left), it looks like he's taking the first kanji from his given name, and the first kanji from the shisho's old shikona. I can only guess what the intended reading is. Soga?

AR2CH9th_o.jpg

And finally, Kokonoe-beya has a new new recruit whose name is Yuki Kinoshita (木下 祐希), the same as Chiyootori (albeit with one different kanji in the given name).

Also, their new gyoji Kimura Ryunosuke is the younger brother of Chiyotaiho.

Interesting that Amarsanaa is listed as member of the heya - as kenshuusei. Is ex-Miyabiyama the first to introduce this category?

As Yubinhaad mentioned, Fujishima won't be able to use that as shikona because oyakata names are forbidden - allowed for maezumo, like shikona in use? Amarsanaa hasn't applied, so he hasn't joined yet - maybe his trial wasn't satisfying. He won't be at maezumo before Aki.

The maezumo competition for Natsu 2018. No returning rikishi are joining the 12 debutants, the first time that's the case since Haru 2016.

Adopted shikona:

Imai -> Sōga 颯雅 (not confirmed beyond Yubinhaad's sleuthing, but I think he's correct)
Suzuki -> Asahisato 朝日里 (presumably) It's 朝日郷, confirmed Day 8
Fujishima -> Ōju 欧樹 (see post below)
Kawabata -> Rōman Roman 浪満 (see post below)
Kosuge -> Wakakosuge 若小菅 (obviously)
Oyama -> Wakaoyama 若小山 (obviously)
Tanaka -> Tanakayama 田中山 (obviously)

No clue about Fujishima and Kawabata based on the yobidashi and gyoji announcements, maybe somebody else has better luck. Edited, thanks Yubinhaad.

Day 3

Haven't seen a live arena video yet, I'll add the clip if I do. My Abema cut has so-so video quality as usual; for a better version there's Miselet's (but I don't trust his videos to stay online in the long run, so I'm embedding my version).

Results:

Mz1   Soga (1-0)              Mz2   Asahisato (0-1)
Mz3   Tsushida (1-0)          Mz4   Kawamura (0-1)
Mz7   Kinoshita (1-0)         Mz5   Oju (0-1)
Mz8   Roman (1-0)             Mz6   Mukaida (0-1)
Mz9   Shiimori (1-0)          Mz10  Wakakosuge (0-1)
Mz12  Tanakayama (1-0)        Mz11  Wakaoyama (0-1)

Tanaka(yama) the standout performer as expected. Tsushida and Kawabata Roman also looked fairly competent, while the rest all seem very green.

The first standings after the clean sweep by the East side:

Mz1   Soga        Futagoyama   1-0 E   |   Mz2   Asahisato   Asahiyama  0-1 W
Mz3   Tsushida    Tokitsukaze  1-0 E   |   Mz4   Kawamura    Naruto     0-1 W
Mz7   Kinoshita   Kokonoe      1-0 E   |   Mz5   Oju         Naruto     0-1 W
Mz8   Roman       Tatsunami    1-0 E   |   Mz6   Mukaida     Naruto     0-1 W
Mz9   Shiimori    Tokitsukaze  1-0 E   |   Mz10  Wakakosuge  Nishiiwa   0-1 W
Mz12  Tanakayama  Sakaigawa    1-0 E   |   Mz11  Wakaoyama   Nishiiwa   0-1 W

Fujishima = Oju (欧樹). First kanji from the shisho, second is another reading of his given name.

Interesting shikona for Kawabata, Tatsunami-beya gives it as Roman (浪満).

I actually had Oju as one of about four desperate guesses, but I thought that was the least likely to be correct... (Laughing...) Many thanks as always, I'll revise the post above.

Otoko no roman? - different -man - from man-in onrei - living in full the dream of a man. Maybe also a fan of the group named after this phrase wiki/男の浪漫

Day 4

The maezumo field has been decimated (duodecimated?) for now, as Roman was not in attendance today.

(Miselet)

Results:

Mz2   Asahisato (0-2)         Mz4   Kawamura (1-1)
Mz10  Wakakosuge (0-2)        Mz5   Oju (1-1)
Mz11  Wakaoyama (0-2)         Mz6   Mukaida (1-1)
Mz3   Tsushida (2-0)          Mz1   Soga (1-1)
Mz9   Shiimori (1-1)          Mz7   Kinoshita (2-0)
Mz12  Tanakayama (2-0)        Mz1   Soga (1-2)

Bonus bout for Soga, or maybe "bonus" when that means you're having to go against the two best participants... In any case, the day went better for Osh's new trio than yesterday did, while Wakanosato's new pair of recruits remains winless.

Standings:

Mz3   Tsushida    Tokitsukaze  2-0 E   |   Mz1  Soga      Futagoyama   1-2 E   |   Mz2   Asahisato   Asahiyama  0-2 W
Mz7   Kinoshita   Kokonoe      2-0 E   |   Mz4  Kawamura  Naruto       1-1 W   |   Mz10  Wakakosuge  Nishiiwa   0-2 W
Mz12  Tanakayama  Sakaigawa    2-0 E   |   Mz5  Oju       Naruto       1-1 W   |   Mz11  Wakaoyama   Nishiiwa   0-2 W
                                           Mz6  Mukaida   Naruto       1-1 W
                                           Mz8  Roman     Tatsunami    1-0-1 E
                                           Mz9  Shiimori  Tokitsukaze  1-1 E

I suspect we're not going to see Tsushida against Tanakayama tomorrow, unfortunately.

Day 5

Roman reigns again, so we're back to the full 12 participants today. Not for long though, since it's also time for the first rookies to go 3-0 and depart the competition.

(Miselet)

(That close-up camera view Abema uses always looks like they'll filming it on a 10 year old cellphone...)

Results:

Mz2   Asahisato (1-2)         Mz11  Wakaoyama (0-3)
Mz1   Soga (1-3)              Mz4   Kawamura (2-1)
Mz8   Roman (2-0-1)           Mz5   Oju (1-2)
Mz9   Shiimori (1-2)          Mz6   Mukaida (2-1)
Mz3   Tsushida (3-0)          Mz7   Kinoshita (2-1)
Mz12  Tanakayama (3-0)        Mz10  Wakakosuge (0-3)

No surprise about who is finishing up maezumo early; guess we'll have to wait for July to see Tsushida and Tanakayama battling. Returning from his day off Roman demonstrated again that he's a cut above the rest of the field, too, and he'll probably go to three wins tomorrow.

Standings:

3-win target achieved:
#01  Mz3   Tsushida    Tokitsukaze  3-0
#02  Mz12  Tanakayama  Sakaigawa    3-0

Still active:
     Mz4   Kawamura    Naruto       2-1 W   |   Mz1  Soga       Futagoyama   1-3 E   |   Mz10  Wakakosuge  Nishiiwa  0-3 W
     Mz6   Mukaida     Naruto       2-1 W   |   Mz2  Asahisato  Asahiyama    1-2 W   |   Mz11  Wakaoyama   Nishiiwa  0-3 W
     Mz7   Kinoshita   Kokonoe      2-1 E   |   Mz5  Oju        Naruto       1-2 W
     Mz8   Roman       Tatsunami    2-0-1 E |   Mz9  Shiimori   Tokitsukaze  1-2 E

The four 2-win guys will probably be paired up East-West tomorrow, while the Nishiiwa duo will have to be mixed in with the 1-win rikishi.

Day 6

(Miselet)

Results:

Mz1   Soga (2-3)              Mz11  Wakaoyama (0-4)
Mz2   Asahisato (2-2)         Mz10  Wakakosuge (0-4)
Mz9   Shiimori (2-2)          Mz5   Oju (1-3)
Mz7   Kinoshita (3-1)         Mz4   Kawamura (2-2)
Mz8   Roman (3-0-1)           Mz6   Mukaida (2-2)

Another East side sweep, including a very gritty third bout, and a proto-ipponzeoi (I guess?) in the fourth. Nice challenge by Mukaida in the last one, too, but Roman came through for his third win as expected.

They seemingly went out of their way to avoid pairing up Asahisato and Wakaoyama a second time (flipping the match order of the two Wakas), but unfortunately they didn't do it for Roman-Mukaida, which already featured on the first day.

Standings:

3-win target achieved:
#01  Mz3   Tsushida    Tokitsukaze  3-0
#02  Mz12  Tanakayama  Sakaigawa    3-0
#03  Mz7   Kinoshita   Kokonoe      3-1
#04  Mz8   Roman       Tatsunami    3-0-1

Still active:
     Mz1   Soga        Futagoyama   2-3 E   |   Mz5  Oju  Naruto  1-3 W   |   Mz10  Wakakosuge  Nishiiwa  0-4 W
     Mz2   Asahisato   Asahiyama    2-2 W   |                             |   Mz11  Wakaoyama   Nishiiwa  0-4 W
     Mz4   Kawamura    Naruto       2-2 W
     Mz6   Mukaida     Naruto       2-2 W
     Mz9   Shiimori    Tokitsukaze  2-2 E

Final day of maezumo action tomorrow.
