Kaninoyama 1,817 Posted January 21, 2018 (edited) NHK just now reporting that Osunaanashi was involved early this month in a car accident, in which he was driving without a license. Hope this isn't the beginning of the end for our Egyptian sekitori. Asameshimae 220 Posted January 21, 2018 I see someone else did post here. Yes, the TV news reported that no one was hurt, but as we know, rikishi aren't allowed to drive and he doesn't have a license anyway. His wife tried to tell the police that she was driving but camera said otherwise. AND, he didn't tell his oyakata about it. Everything seemed find today on the dohyo, but I'd be a surprised if Osuna was on the dohyo tomorrow for starters. Just checked but found nothing on the net news Japanese or English. Lying to the police might actually create visa problems if that results in a criminal charge (assuming his wife is foreign) and might be the part that the NSK takes against most in all of this. Akinomaki 40,755 Posted January 21, 2018 (edited) This the scandal season now, forced to retire is the standard in it. Driving while not allowed by the NSK is one thing, but driving without a license makes it worse, hiding it even worse - and any new offender of these rules has to expect to get a harsher treatment than those before, in the fashion: "they still haven't learned" plus "sumo keeps producing scandals now" Maybe he gets away with kyujo now and suspension next time, but that alone would drop him to the bottom of makushita. PawnSums 59 Posted January 21, 2018 Can they report stuff when it happens, instead of always saying "late last month" or earlier this month?
Kintamayama 45,495 Posted January 21, 2018 Lights were on till late this evening at the Kyokai offices in the KKan. Hakkaku and the bigwigs summoned Ootake Oyakata and Oosunaarashi to get a first hand report, whatever that's worth.. One by one, all the riji arrived from wherever they were to discuss this. Kasugano was not happy with the hoardes of reporters present and his face showed it well.
yorikiried by fate 2,029 Posted January 21, 2018 Maybe the NSK should at this time just go ahead and lynch a couple of well-known local mid-level mobsters. Still not good but at least with a positive spin in the eyes of the public... I almost typed lobsters.

orandashoho 720 Posted January 21, 2018 A rikishi could have held a license from before, but if licenses in Japan need renewal tests they might lose it. I"m not sure of the reason for the ban, could it be the dress code, the danger of geta or kimonos constricting the driver? Or is it simply that seeing a rikishi drive a modern car would harm the illusion of the timeless traditions? (What about horses, are rikishi allowed to ride?)
rhyen 1,846 Posted January 21, 2018 I think the Toki incident was the reason for the ban.

I think Mitoizumi in the mid 80s had a motorcycle accident and got cuts to his face, and had to go kyujo, and that was why the ban was introduced.

Osunarashi apparently has an Egyptian international drivers license and the right to drive with it in Japan had expired - he likely couldn't apply to have it change into a proper Japanese one. Kintamayama 45,495 Posted January 21, 2018 (edited) Kyujo tomorrow. He is denying that he was the driver. "My wife was driving. She is pregnant so in order to protect her I moved to the driver's seat after the accident" he said. He did not report the incident to the Kyokai. He did, however, pay damages to the person he crashed into. "As his shisho, I apologize. Something like this happening during these trying times is regretful. He did not report this to me," said Ootake Oyakata. Edited January 21, 2018 by Kintamayama
apraxin 56 Posted January 21, 2018 NHK latest: https://www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/20180122/k10011296761000.html. - Oosunarashi's lawyer accompanied him and Ootake to the meeting. - Lawyer says Oosunarashi's pregnant wife was driving, but Oosunarashi moved into the driver's seat 'to protect her' after the accident. He admits not telling either the Kyokai or his Oyakata about the accident. - Kyujo from tomorrow, Ootake says 'there's no way he can do sumo with things as they are'. - Ootake apologizes to the Kyokai for adding to their troubles at a difficult time and to all sumo fans for disappointing them - 'after the troubles last year I told my guys so many times the only way to end these problems is to live honestly, I'm in shock, I can't think what to say,'
Asashosakari 19,647 Posted January 21, 2018 Let's not forget that Otake is on the board of trustees, so this is especially awkward as far as the NSK's complex web of responsibilities and supervisory roles goes. Probably a good idea that they're planning to put ex-oyakata on the board after the upcoming elections...
