Four young rikishi from Takasago-beya receive their first proper shikona. Interestingly, Asaokado keeps the same kanji from his family name but now has the reading as Asadaimon. Meanwhile, moto-Asashiomoto must be a Hanshin Tigers fan.

In contrast, two more experienced rikishi have decided to return to their family name. Hamaeiko gives that up after 14 years and is now Ishida for the first time since maezumo, while Toseima is just plain Mori for the first time.

Hamaminato has taken the "given name as (part of) the shikona" route, in his case that gives him the four-kanji shikona Kayatoiwa, which I like. And in an amusing twist, he's also changed his shikona given name to... Daimon! To clarify: Hamaminato Kayato changes to Kayatoiwa Daimon.

Youngster Takita takes a rather unusual first shikona - Houn. The first kanji is another reading of the first kanji from Minezaki-beya.

Newcomer Tanaka receives a proper shikona for his first basho on the banzuke, honouring his home prefecture of Hokkaido.

Mk42e Kisenoyama > Kiseoka (禧勢岳)
Sd62w Asaokado > Asadaimon (朝大門)
Sd73e Hamaeiko > Ishida (石田)
Sd99e Asayokomichi > Asashinjo (朝心誠)
Jd31e Toseima > Mori (森)
Jd66w Asatatsuke > Asadoji (朝童子)
Jd67w Asashiomoto > Asahanshin (朝阪神)
Jd77e Umiwatari > Umizaru (海猿)
Jd91w Miura > Kaishun (魁隼)
Jk1w Hamaminato > Kayatoiwa (夏野登岩)
Jk11w Takita > Houn (峰雲)
Jk24e Tanaka > Chiyohokkai (千代北海)

Kizenryu (J14w 3-12)     Ms8   Yamaguchi (J12e 2-12-1)

One for the "totally random departures from standard practice" pile...

I have no idea about Banzuke machinations but was Endo at M1E expected? And a KK here would nominally finally get him a Sanyaku slot, yes? Presuming of course that one is available?

Did Takanoiwa intai?

He´s listed as Juryo 12 West on the Haru Banzuke as you can see in Asashosakari's 2nd post.
Let´s see if he will be fit/allowed to enter the Basho.

Yes. Chiyotairyu expected at K1 and he got it.

===

Very interesting and very strange... Takanoiwa:  -9.5

I expect same place as Hatsu.

They only guaranteed him a spot in juryo, they didn't say it would be J3e.

On another note, the banzuke topics in English are up remarkably early this time.

"the very Takagenji "  I wonder what makes him very? :-)

Endo getting a KK from M1 would be an accomplishment for him - he's never made KK when ranked M1-M4 in 9 attempts.  (and I've created a poll about it).

They must've missed a word out, or maybe more. "Rude", "disrespectful" and "f*cking annoying" all fit aptly between "very" and "Takagenji".

Jd67w Asashiomoto > Asahanshin (朝阪神)

He has no baseball experience, but by influence of his parents and because he's from Osaka pref., Asahanshin is a big Hanshin fan, esp. of manager Kanemoto. Since he remembers, Kanemoto was successful for the Hanshin Tigers and he was always fond of him. Like him, he wants to avoid kyujo, even with injury.

The ex-sekitori (36 of 'em) entering Haru basho...

Appearance anniversaries: Fujiazuma was last seen in juryo one year ago (time flies), while it's already been three years for Masunoyama and four for Sagatsukasa. At least for a start Masunoyama is now back in makushita for the first time since Aki 2015...

Birthday updates: February saw a trio of birthdays, with Kagamio turning 30, freshly demoted Osunaarashi getting to 26 (hopefully not his last birthday in the sumo world), and Asabenkei reaching the age of 29 after missing out on last basho's promotion bonanza...he only got dropped one and a half ranks and will have another good shot this time. And soon, Keitenkai will be 28 (on the Saturday before shonichi), while fellow one-time juryo Takaryu turns 26 on nakabi. No further March birthdays after that.

"Out" shows how many basho it has been since each rikishi's last sekitori appearance. Rikishi with their shikona in darker cells have makuuchi experience. Last basho's results here.

I believe it was a dislocated shoulder and it actually happened before Hatsu. He’s had problems with it over the years if my memory serves me correctly.

He also needs to grow a few centimeters taller.  Actually, about 20 centimeters.   Am looking forward to his matches.
