Tochinoshin returns to Georgia

Recommended Posts

After the party for Onogawa-oyakata, Tochinoshin today returned to Georgia, after a year again. He wants to meet the president and request the building of a real dohyo in his home country: "There is no one made from soil there yet". He'll also attend the wedding of his younger brother. The return to Japan is planned for the 12th. http://www.daily.co.jp/general/2018/06/03/0011321257.shtml

Isn't this the first opportunity he has to meet to meet his baby daughter too?

It is nice to see such a large turn-out for Tochinoshin at home.  I can't imagine British fans making such a big deal over a fellow countryman succeeding in an overseas sport - maybe we take representation on the international stage for granted.  I like that the Georgians are celebrating his achievement as it is a bloody hard achievement in sumo for any rikishi, irrespective of the whole 'flying the Georgian flag internationally' dimension.

Not sure which thread I should post so I think this one is most fitting.

Tochinoshin was greeted upon arrival by fans, the media, his wife and daughter, family, and a choir.

Truly a hero's welcome.

Tochinoshin at the Japanese Embassy received a public acknowledgement of his contribution to Japan-Georgia friendly relations

Tochinoshin today arrived back in Japan. He had no time for training while in Georgia: "Maybe I lost some weight."

I see that he maintained the sumo dress code on this trip (even sporting a Hakuho yukata on his return trip to Japan).  It is admirable of him to represent sumo during his appearances in public.  Obviously, Tochinoshin's great achievement (i.e., promotion to Ozeki) won him permission to journey back to his homeland.  By any chance, did the NSK pick up the tab for this trip, or did it come entirely out of his own pocket?

I don't think that's a Hakuho yukata.  The kanji may occur in a bunch of places, but I don't see any .  A lot of rikishi have 鵬 in their shikona, particularly Enho and formerly Daikiho.   Semi-on-topic, there also were Roho and Wakanoho.  Full list: http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?shikona=*鵬*&heya=-1&shusshin=-1&b=-1&high=-1&hd=-1&entry=-1&intai=-1&l=e&sort=6

There is a 白 above every instance of a 鵬 .

Ok, I was looking only at the picture he quoted, and all of them are obscured or not recognizable on that one.  All of them are mostly obscured on most of them, but indeed there is one that's quite clear on one of the photos now that I have reason to look harder.  I stand corrected.

It's mandatory.

I’m pretty sure I’ve seen rikishi in casual clothing before though. 100% certain about Hakuhō– do yokozuna get special privileges?

On the beach or in the rice fields perhaps, but even Hakuho would never appear at the airport with shorts and tshirt.

Or when playing golf. But that's rather considered as special sports wear…

While Tochinoshin was in Georgia, TBS used the opportunity to have with him an episode on Georgia for Sekai Fushigi Hakken - Discovery of the World's Mysteries: 004 TBS Jul. 28th, 21h. Also Kokkai appears on it - both only in the 1st half of the program. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tW9cUgtPh8k&t=5m5s

The videos likely will vanish quickly, to look for new: https://www.google.com/search?q=世界ふしぎ発見!+7月28日+180728&source=lnms&tbm=vid

Strange picture. The couple is holding up glasses as if they're going to toast, Tochinoshin doesn't and his hands aren't visible, they seem to be stuck under the table with not enough room for them. The perspective in the picture looks off, it doesn't look like a still but a fake.

Surely it’s just a posed publicity photo? Standard stuff.
