You will find answers to questions you never knew to ask! And (especially if you're living and working in a place where people never heard of sumo or smirk that it's a spectacle of fat men in nappies) it's fun to follow a basho together with friends. To be able to share thoughts and comments about your favourite rikishi. To get news, directly translated by generous people helping those who can't read Japanese. TimW8 9 Posted June 12, 2018 Thanks orandoshoho. You've eased my mind a little and I look forward to the brotherhood/sisterhood that sumo will bring. My wife and I really enjoy watching the basho together. It's bonding time for us. We both have different rikishi that we cheer for. Sometimes when they wrestle each other it's a win-win situation. Currently my favorite is Tochinoshin. I've always cheered on the Gaijin. I was a Kotooshu fan back in the day and an Akebono fan when I was living in Japan. Yes, that was when I first became a sumo fan, around 1998, after watching the digests transmitted by Eurosport... never forgot that memorable Mainoumi mitokorozeme Akebono... that is floating around on Youtube and still being brought up on wide shows whenever the chances of smaller/lighter rikishi like Ishiura and Enho are discussed. Don't worry about the Forum. Read the rules, follow the lead of others, and if in doubt ask one of the monderators. sumojoann 1,268 Posted June 14, 2018 Hi Tim, welcome to the Forum! Living in Utah, I imagine that you and your wife must feel very isolated when it comes to sumo. Living in Texas, I have encountered a tremendous amount of ignorance, stereotypes and resistance when trying to explain my passion for sumo to others. I was really hoping to "recruit" some friends and neighbors and turn them into fans but I have had to face reality that it's not going to happen. So finding this forum has been a godsend. I've only been a fan since 2013 when I was first introduced to sumo (TV Japan by satellite). Even though I am new, I have felt accepted here. I think as long as one doesn't act like a know-it-all, shows respect for all of the other members, and is not otherwise obnoxious, then you will be accepted, too. You mentioned that you lived in Japan during the Akebono era. Are you fluent in Japanese? If so, you will be able to contribute even more by helping to translate news articles, press conferences and even the Yusho winner's interview!! But even if your Japanese language ability is limited like mine is (mine is severely limited as I have started studying it only 3 weeks ago!), you will still be warmly welcomed. And that's how I grew to love them so. I would be happy to help with this forum in any way I can. I always have time for worthy causes. Let me know if any need arises and I will pitch in.
