Looks like I've been wrong about Terunofuji's comeback. I doubt he'll make it back to ozeki but makuuchi seems achievable.

No offense intended to your prognostications, but I hope you are wrong again. ;-)

No offense taken. I’m almost 100% at picking the opposite of what ends up happening.

If the big man catches his legs under him he is pretty damn good, not speculating on returning to Ozeki but he can make some noise if he maintains his health and keeps making his legs stronger.

I'm enjoying his comeback immensely. Would love to see him make Ozeki again. Would be a helluva storyline.

Terunofuji has been one of my favorites since I first saw him in the lower divisions videos that were so kindly shared by people on YouTube. His comeback, so far, is already a great story. I just hope his knees will hold up doing the type of 'big man sumo' he has always done. I want him to get back to Makuuchi and see how he does against some of the newcomers that he missed while he was injured. Their could be quite a few retirements in the near future.

Long way to go obviously -- but could a zensho-yusho from Terunofuji be enough to get him in makunouchi by March, or is he that far down that he's at least another tournament away?

Depends on the proverbial banzuke luck, but several years ago Endo got promoted with a yusho from way back in the ranking J14 or J13. 6 or 7 or 8 years ago.

What I root for is a Terunofuji zenyusho, since it is so rare to achieve in juryo - Tochinoshin was the last one to do it.

Too far down for a new promotion, but a former ozeki should get promoted back.

Well, Endo was at J13w, too and he got the nod with a 14-1 in his 3rd basho ever...

Love the guy. Just didn’t believe he could get back to where he is.

You cannot be making a case out of the few times a Juryo zensho actually happened. Baruto was promoted from J11 to M11, so Terunofuji's rank should be well in range based on the five item dataset.

Shouldn't the thread be renamed to "Terunofuji's comeback" or something like this?

Makuuchi is a done deal.  Ozekiship may be a good possibility given the current crop of aging, injured, and an immature bunch in Makuuchi.   If Terunofuji stays healthy, who is to stop him?   In this basho, he is dominating the juryo.   He is not just winning.  He is winning convincingly.

And, lest we forget, this is @Akinomaki's topic, so the final decision on the title is his.

Just because I unlike some haven't complained that a thread has been misused as a honbasho topic, this does not mean I also condone the forced renaming and thus the loss of what the thread was intended to be about. I will think about a better title.
