Do the dohyo-iri for Tokyo 2020 and get that Japanese citizenship to get his ichidai-toshiyori status. At this point he's hanging on to get those. Tokyo is still 2 years away. Whilst I cannot disagree with that possibility I believe his goal is to get 1000 wins as a makunouchi performer, anything beyond looks difficult. We may have only 1 Yokozuna next year. Unless Tochinoshin makes a run this time next year could be no Yokozuna.

Wurstbroetchen 5 Posted July 12, 2018 What happened to Tochinoshin? He does not look that pink or should I say red as in the last bashos. And he is not breathing that havily.

Eikokurai 3,437 Posted July 12, 2018 It’s Tochinoshin’s to lose now. He’s very well set to join the relatively small club of Ozeki debutants winning a yusho (and dare I say, start a tsuna run).

That would be a bummer for his fans but i feel like he is over the hill and no longer can perform the way an Ozeki does. Always doing fine in training but he doesn't show up when it's on for real. Catching up here- but some people will say that he never did perform the way an ozeki should. I think that since he has maintained his rank for the past few years, it's ozeki-worthy by definition, but through most of his tenure he didn't exactly look like a yokozuna candidate, to put it kindly.
Jyuunomori 226 Posted July 12, 2018 (edited) And here we are. Tochinoshin if he keeps this up. (He has been looking way better since day 2), is gonna start a Tsuna run here if he wins the Yusho. MItakeumi, on the other hand, may begin his Ozeki run if he scored really high. God this basho is only 5 days in and is beginning to be as exciting as the last two basho. Edit: Abi is starting to milk that Kinboshi money already. Congratulations. Edited July 12, 2018 by Jyuunomori
Dwale 419 Posted July 12, 2018 Now tentatively hopeful for Mitakeumi starting a successful ozeki campaign. Of course, a lot of sumo has to happen before that can be achieved, but it's something I've long thought we would see. He will continue to throw himself at the barriers until he either accomplishes his aim or breaks his body to pieces. Tochinoshin looking good. With Kakuryu giving up another loss, I would consider Tochinoshin the yusho favorite at this time. Of course, anything can happen in sumo... I feel bad for Arawashi. His sekiwake run was actually better than his ozeki run if you dont mention the 15-0 yusho. He only had three 10+wins as an ozeki in 24 basho, the yusho, a 12-3 and 11-4 when he lost the yusho to harumafuji, underwhelming to say the least. He is mentally weak clearly, i think he got comfortable when he reached ozeki. It may be good for him to get some fire back if he loses the rank or he'll just retire, anyways i think he reached his maximum potential and keeping him as an ozeki will be a waste of time. And then he wins the yusho and i look like a dumbass :(
Yamanashi 3,903 Posted July 12, 2018 I thought Takayasu was holding his elbow after today's bout; checking the replay, there seems to be a huge bruise on the inside of his left arm. I can't believe he received that bruise mere seconds beforehand [of course, there's a world of things that I can't believe that turn out to be true!]

Ikioi made a brief attempt to apply a kotenage during the match which probably aggravated the injury.

For Hakuho the Japanese citizenship is not an issue if he decides to apply. It will not be a surprise if he obtains it by this time next year. To remain active until Tokyo 2020 is not easy because he will not drag on once he cannot compete for yusho. Anyway, he is still more healthy and stronger than all those ozekies and yokozunas. word20 21 Posted July 12, 2018 What is happening with Shodai? Now he has been in Makuuchi some years and every time he comes up and fight Sanyaku ranks he loses and get a loosing record and get down again to Ms number 10 or something like that. It does not seem that he has what is needed like Mitakeumi, who stays in Sanyaku for several bashos now.
Benevolance 2,511 Posted July 12, 2018 Hakuho could easily stretch his remaining career over the time required to reach the olympics. It's 11 tournaments away. The top division is so depleted, the Y/O ranks are going to be filled with guys that Hak can reasonably compete with for the foreseeable future. He just does what he's doing - stick it out to win a tournament or two a year, withdraw from the others early on, he'll be seen as generally competing without actually doing so all year long...

WAKATAKE 2,671 Posted July 12, 2018 Abi becoming a favorite of mine. Aminishiki looking like he can definitely hold his own with the Juryo. All three ozeki win with Tochinoshin still looking the best, and Mitakeumi following closely on his heels.

The previous three tournaments this year are also technically in the past, yet you seem to be treating them as relevant to right now. You only need to go back one tournament further than Hatsu which you reference there to find him winning a yusho. He won three last year, including a zensho. He’s won three of the last seven completed tournaments. Are they not recent enough to be relevant?

Bugman 384 Posted July 12, 2018 As someone who's been away a long time i'm impressed with Tochinoshin, and interested to find he is Ozeki rank now. I could well be wrong as i'm very inexperienced, but from what i remember a few years ago, he was a good rikishi with occasional flashes of brilliance and had the odd good tournament, but he lacked consistency and confidence sometimes, he looks highly improved in those areas.
Dwale 419 Posted July 13, 2018 Now that Kakuryu is out, I don't see anyone stopping Tochinoshin (barring injury, which at this point would be tragic).
