Japan won junior men's team gold

They beat Mongolia 2-1 in the final (Kawabuchi lost the third match), although the stream incorrectly lists Mongolia as finishing 1st. Two of the members of the Mongolian team I recognize from high school sumo in Japan: Temulin? (best 16 at the 2017 interhigh and best 8 at the 2018 Kanazawa tournament)  and Daraibaatoru (best 4 at the Kochi tournament).

The 2 Mongolians from Asahigaoka-high proudly present the runner-up certificates - Choijil-kun and Dalai-kun (right)

a000788725_02.jpg

Dalai-kun was senpou for the 1st bouts, Choijil taishou for the last ones. After all 3-0 rounds, Dalai lost to Hanada in the final and the middle man lost as well. http://www.townnews.co.jp/0607/2018/08/04/443352.html

and joined by athletes from the Odawara sumo association, who train there

a000789109_01.jpg

The Asahigaoka high club has started from zero in 2011. At first they had drawn a circle in the courtyard and trained there, the next year they got a dohyo to train. As the 2 Mongolian exchange students joined in 2016, the club for the 1st time took part in the interhigh team event. The club now has 7 members.

And this year, the one who started the sumo group in 2011, not yet a club then, who was the first team captain, returned to the school as teacher. http://www.townnews.co.jp/0607/2018/08/11/444295.html

The local paper had an article about Choijilsuren,  バドジャルガル・チョイジルスレン and another Mongolian exchange student, (e.g.) Dalaibaator, シャグダルスレン・ダライバートル. Both 2nd year at Asahigaoka high in Odawara, Kanagawa. Both want to first proceed to university and then either serve the sumo world or Mongolia. Choijilsuren has Mongol-zumo and wrestling background, he won the Kanto high school championships in June,  lost in the ketteisen to enter the final tournament at the interhigh and helped the Kanagawa junior team to the best 16 at the kokutai. Dalaibaator did judo in Mongolia, he was 2nd at the Kanto select tournament this autumn. http://www.kanaloco.jp/article/296537

Dalaibaator (17, 181cm, 120kg) and Choijilsuren (17, 185cm, 115kg)

The local papers keep posting articles about the Asahigaoka-sumo club. The 2 Mongolians are now leading it as 3rd years, but there is a problem: a team must only have up to 20% foreign exchange students in it. The Asahigaoka team has to compete with 4 members at the Kanto championships, like at the Kanagawa championships, where they finished 2nd. Dalaibaator will likely be in the team for Kanto, Choijilsuren was in it for Kanagawa, but he finished 3rd in the individuals open weight, and Dalaibaator 2nd. http://www.townnews.co.jp/0607/2018/06/09/435460.html

Dalai-kun won the Kanto mini-kokutai (juniors), preliminaries for the Fukui happy kokutai end of the month, he won also with the team. After Choijil started at the interhigh, apparently it's now his turn again

Choijil in the final of the interhigh. The school had no team at the start.

The Kanagawa team, for the first time runner up at the kokutai juniors, in the middle in the back Choijil- and Dalai-kun, team coach was their Asahigaoka high coach, the 2 on the right from Mukainooka high and Nakamura from Keio high.

The first and last time the 2 Mongolians could start together in a team at a major tournament. They want to continue studies together, at a physical education university (so maybe Nittaidai, not Nichidai etc.), and sumo as well. http://www.townnews.co.jp/0607/2018/10/13/452802.html

Choijil- and Dalai-kun are about to leave the club - and Asahigaoka high already has a new 1st year Mongolian duo; オチルサイハン Ochilsaihan (maybe) and Munkhjargal -  they were in the team at the recent Hirosaki high school select tournament: http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/topic/38666-live- 33rd-all-japan-senior-high-school-selection-something/

The new Asahigaoka team finished 3rd at the national high school Towada tournament on the 15th last month

sempai Choijil- and Dalai-kun came for a visit recently - with Munkh-kun, the headmaster and team member Yachi in the middle - both failed to get into the best 32 tournament at the interhigh

I could be mistaken, but I thought I saw Ochil training at Isegahama recently, already with a topknot. They currently have no foreigner spot, but looking at their heya members I don't see any active rikishi it could be.

Could that be him on the right?  The face and body look similar - check the video below for more shots.

They've both done well, but Dalai's missed a lot of competition, presumably due to injury.

Choijil has won 2 East Japan weight class tournaments, made the best 4 of a couple national events, and finished top 8 at the All Japan Championship. He's also good in team competition and is a regular on Nittaidai's 3-man and 5-man teams, which are the best in college sumo. With Hanada and Kawabuchi not active at the moment, he's probably close to being among the top 5 or 6 competitors in college sumo.

top 8 in all japan means he gets a Sd90 rank right? Great momentum and hopefully both are picked up by one of the 19 stables without a foreigner.

Top 8 is an SdTD qualification, though his might expire by the time he graduates so he may need to place again.

So far there was no mention that the 2 year validity of the qualifications is over, we just had Kayo for Natsu with a 2020 qualification. Both are 4th years, he graduates next March, we will see.

A feature about the last year at Asahigaoka for 5 club members, including the 2 from Mongolia. Chinzorig went to Asahi university, the other 4 to Nittaidai.

- gone

Now properly from NTV, the 3rd of series on the 5 in their last year

the first 2 parts:

Edit: the next 2 Mongolians were at the interhigh, Dergerbat best 16 https://kirokukensaku.net/0IH23/detail_12002020.html, Batbold qf in the 100kg class https://kirokukensaku.net/0IH23/detail_12002050.html

Dergerbat was impressive. I have seen him at a few tournaments now, and though he has no big results yet he's shown a high level of ability and should do well regardless of the route he takes after graduation.

And Dergerbat has just won the National Towada High School Tournament. His opponent in the final had what sounded like a Mongolian name and defeated high school yokozuna Nishide earlier, but I didn't recognize him.

Circling back to Choijil, who is joining alongside Dalai.

No mention of a sandanme tsukedashi qualification - does this mean it's expired in the meantime, or is it only due to be announced before his first basho?

Choijil earned his Ms15TD last November, so he'd still have it.

Dalai earned SdTD at least twice previously, but they would've expired by now.

A report from NiTele's News Every on the sumo club of Asahigaoka high, where Onokatsu and Kyokukaiyu started their sumo life in Japan as the first Mongolians at the school  - with now Dulguun Nyambayar as the top and also 2nd year Bat-erdene Batbold presented, who wants to become a teacher - of course more of it is about the Japanese members
