New recruits for Hatsu 2019

Recommended Posts

Ooki Shirakawa 白川大貴  (18, 182cm, 160kg) from the Kagawa prefecture Takamatsu Minami high school sumo club enters Oitekaze-beya and will be in the shindeshi kensa for the Hatsu-basho and in maezumo, to have his dohyo debut at the Haru basho (here maezumo does not count). He'll be the 3rd from this school to enter the sumo world.

He won the Shikoku high school tournament in June, but lost in the 2nd round of the interhigh best 32 decider http://kirokukensaku.net/0IH18/detail_20180804_12002020260.html

just like last year

He had thought about proceeding to university, but decided to go for the challenge in ozumo. During primary school he had visited the heya's location for the Haru basho and made the decision to enter Oitekaze-beya.

The oyakata: "Depending on his efforts, makuuchi is not just a dream. If he won't get injured, he'll make it to juryo for a start." - he wants him to further polish his specialty oshi-zumo

Shirakawa: "Getting used to the environment, without thinking about the future, I want to do my best to concentrate on the one bout after the other in front of me ."

the oyakata was at the school on the 15th for the announcement

That doesn't make any sense and probably means the writer at his local paper has no idea what "hatsu-dohyo" actually means.

Joining Sadogatake-beya is 17-year-old Koki Susumu (進 洸希) from Ibigawa town in Ibi District, Gifu prefecture. Currently a third-year student and member of the judo department at Chukyo High School in Mizunami, Gifu. The former principal of the school is a close friend of the heya's koenkai chairman, and through them Susumu received an invitation to visit the heya, which he did in his first year at the school. After several more visits he decided he would later join ozumo.

Sadogatake-oyakata (former Sekiwake Kotonowaka) visited the school for a press conference with his new deshi.

Joining Fujishima-beya is 18-year-old Yuto? Suzuki (鈴木 優斗), currently in his final year at Hiryu high school in Numazu, Shizuoka prefecture. He started doing sumo in elementary school, his power caught the eye of Fujishima-oyakata (former Ozeki Musoyama) and he later visited the heya for keiko while in middle school. Earlier this year he reached the semi-finals of the interhigh competition, and helped the school to third place in the team competition.

He currently stands at 181cm, 150kg and is a tsuki-oshi specialist, wanting to do sumo like the shisho. He also hopes to meet his "natural enemy" Daisuke Saito (high school Yokozuna) on the ozumo dohyo, having lost five times to him across their school years.

Edit: Ahh, just too slow! (Laughing...) Picture removed as it's above.

From what I've seen he looks pretty handy. He was in the recent Otoi-ozumo event with Hoshoryu and Naya, where he crushed some jonokuchi/jonidan rikishi. His style and build are like Musoyama's.

I'm hoping his 'enemy' Saito turns pro as well...he is the complete package.

Suzuki Yuto is definitely someone to look forward to. He has sekitori potential, but his sumo is perhaps a bit one-dimensional (preferring oshi-zumo), which probably explains why he has such a bad record against the much more skilful Saito Daisuke. However, Yuto does have the power, and the build, to make it work, so he'll get to Sandanme in no time. He has a younger brother called Suzuki Manato, who has a much smaller stature, but imo more skilled.

Here's when he led his club, Fuji Wanpaku Sumo Club, to second place at the 11th National Club Championships, narrowly losing to the then dominant Iruma Junior Sumo Club.

Joining Takadagawa-beya is 18-year-old Hikaru Hasegawa (長谷川 輝), currently in his final year at Awa High School in Chiba prefecture. Although his background is in judo in middle and high school, his uncle is a former rikishi and so he started thinking about joining ozumo in his second year of high school. He stands at 177cm and 162kg at the moment, with grip tests showing 97kg on the right hand and 80kg on the left.

He will be the first from Awa High School to enter ozumo.

I had posted him for Haru, because there was no indicator that he enters already in Hatsu - but as from Chiba it is easier to commute to school than for the one from Hokkaido

Hikaru Hasegawa 長谷川 輝 (18, 177.7kg, 162.3kg) from Kamogawa-city, 3rd year at Chiba-pref. Awa high school will enter Takadagawa-beya, as the first ever from that high school. Grip power: right 97kg, left 80kg. In middle and high school he did judo, this year he was 3rd in the over 100kg category at the pref. level soutai. One relative is a former rikishi, and in his 2nd year he thought about entering ozumo.

Kamiyama (17, 178cm, 160kg) from Saitama-sakae high joined Kasugano-beya (a natural choice without hesitation) and had the entry press conference today at the heya with the oyakata. The shikona is planned to be Tochikamiyama 栃神山 (or maybe with another reading). He started at the Iruma youth sumo club and there from 2nd grade on caught the eye of Kasugano oyakata. In middle school he took part in keiko at the Kasugano-beya Iruma training camp, and already there had trained with Tochinoshin. He had excellent results this year in his high school club (see below).

Today Ryou Kiyama (?) 木山稜  (17, 168cm, 81.5kg) joined the local Nakagawa-beya, as 3rd year from the pref. Mukainooka industrial high sumo club. In middle school he was at the then Kasugayama-beya as his school's a occupation experience, in first year high school he first met Nakagawa-oyakata and told him of his dream to become rikishi. In the heya, Kasugaryu and Yoshikasuga are from Mukainooka industrial high and Kiyama went to the heya to train with his sempai. He aims for sekitori.

Good to see Nakagawa making progress, the first new recruit since the heya re/opened. Rumour has it that middle school Yokozuna Ko Yoshii will also enter Nakagawa (in March presumably, after finishing school). That sounds like quite a coup, although I don't really follow middle school sumo enough to know how big a deal it would be. In any case we'll have to wait and see if the rumours are true.

The new guy in Tatsunami is  (19 years old. 1.82/115 )  須藤将貴 (Masaki Sutou?) and was raised in the Philippines -Filipino mother but has his shusshin as Kanagawa. He arrived in Japan in July and is learning Japanese. Asked why he decided on sumo he answered in English: "I would like to help my family." He says he was introduced to sumo through YouTube. Probably Jason's channel..

For Onoe-beya Hodaka Isa 伊佐穂嵩, from the Kumamoto Buntoku high sumo club. Shodai's performance was encouragement, esp. because he couldn't train properly for half a year at the school after the Kumamoto quake in 2016 - he trained at home. http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20190107/sum19010717530010-n1.html

Hasegawa wants to start as "Hasegawa", the shikona of his uncle - from the same Kamogawa, Chiba, so it was this Hasegawa

20190107-OHT1I50132-N.jpgo

last year at the city hall of Kamogawa

AS20190107003147_commL.jpgo

Hasegawa was 177.7cm, 162.3kg, grip strength: right 97kg, left 80kg, back strength 280kg - but maybe it was just 180kg and an error by Asahi, because Hochi reported that Suzuki was far away top among the 10 with 195kg - grip strength: 67kg right kg, left 72kg, 181cm, 145kg

20190107-OHT1I50111-N.jpgo

Kamiyama was 179cm, 154kg, grip strength: right 63kg, left 80kg

His local Kumamoto paper had an article early December last year about Isa joining Onoe-beya, but that paper isn't covered by the ceek search I use to check the papers.

Isa really got into sumo when he won the city tournament as 4th grade - the paper doesn't mention it, but the winners of the tournament (4th-6th grades) got a bout with Hahuko - of which the blog above recorded his - maybe that led to an extra boost in enthusiasm.

He then went to the Shichijo sumo nurture club - he is from Kikuchi-city - and went on to Shichijo middle school, which assembles the members of that first club. During middle school he was runner-up at the pref. level championships. Last year as Buntoku club member his best results was best 8 in the open category of the high school national select tournament. With 167cm, 140kg not tall - Onoe-oyakata, who scouted him: "Moving forward - I saw the good disposition in him."

The Hattorizakura fan channel posted day 1 of maezumo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kv0Cu863jx0&t=5m40s

Hopefully Miselet will post a video from Abema later (there was no stream on YT today, a sign that it may be quite late at best)
