February special one day tournaments-NHK tourney pics

Recommended Posts

Both Mitakeumi and Hakuhou have announced they will be taking part in the one day tournaments, slated to take place on February 9th (NHK Welfare Sumo tournament) and 10th (FujiTV Sumo tournament, both to be held at the Kokugikan)  "It still hurts a bit," said Mitakeumi. "Still a bit uncomfortable, but less," said Hakuhou.

Both events have cash awards for the yusho, but they are essentially "put on a good show for the fans" activities.  The competition is not worth sustaining an injury.

Tochinoshin is out. "I don't want to do anything unnecessary," he said. He plans on starting to train from tomorrow. "Probably some shiko and suriashi, then we'll see," he said.

@Mitakeumi, you need to listen to Tochinoshin!

He is doing exactly the same mistakes as Terunofuji did. Don't want to be wrong, but believe he also participate on this Fuji basho while injured.

Shamelessly plagiarizing last year's post...

https://www.fujitv.co.jp/events/grandsumo/index.html

This year's one-day prize money tournament sponsored by Fuji TV will be taking place this Sunday, as usual featuring the juryo division playing down to a tomoe-sen final and the makuuchi rikishi competing in a standard knockout bracket.

In addition there will be a short sumo lecture and as in the past few years also three "old boys" exhibition matches:

Magaki (ex-Tosayutaka) - Kumagatani (ex-Tamaasuka)
Furiwake (ex-Takamisakari) - Inagawa (ex-Futeno)
Tomozuna (ex-Kyokutenho) - Sanoyama (ex-Satoyama)

Sakaigawa-beya, Michinoku-beya and Sadogatake-beya will be presenting chanko varieties for sale. Ticket holders are also able to enter a lottery to win photo opportunities with Takakeisho, Mitakeumi and Ichinojo.

Satellite channel Fuji TV One is broadcasting the first half of the makuuchi tournament from 14:30 to 16:05 JST, before Fuji TV proper takes over for the deciding rounds between 16:05 and 17:20.

The draws for the two divisional tournaments were released today.

From the tournament:

Hakuhou did the dohyo-iri and had a bout. "I just hope I don't injure anything else. I'll do my best!!"

Kakuryuu also did the dohyo iri and had a bout. "It was OK. When I move it still hurts, but I can still do sumo.. I will carry that weight !"

Seems like? He actually did, taking home what seems like 2,500,000 yen.  Beat Tochiouzan (who beat Hakuhou in the second round..) in the semifinals by hatakikomi and beat Yoshikaze in the finals by yorikiri. Before that, he beat Takarafuji, Chiyotairyuu and Aoiyama, all by yorikiri. All other participating Y/O lost in the first round- Kakuryuu beaten by Abi in the second round.. "I'm happy, since it's a major tournament.. I usually do well in Fuji TV's tournaments. It feels good to get a yusho," Takayasu said. "I know that it was just hanazumo and it doesn't really count Basie, but it's important to win even during these tournaments. I will do my best and go all the way during the basho as well. It puts me in a yusho mode.."  said Takayasu. What will he do with the money? "I will invest it in body, as that is the most important thing," he sumoed.

MioMio is astounding - apparently they also have NHK again with the Hatsu-basho - incomplete so far, I'll post more in the Hatsu video thread if it turns out to be of some use.

I thought they keep the videos for just under 1 year, but actually they still have last year's Fuji TV broadcast - the one on YT in the 2018 thread is of course long gone - I post it here instead, for comparison - as usual Shibatayama as commentator

http://www.miomio.tv/watch/cc364530/

the 2017 tournament is also still listed, but that video is really gone by now

The 72min. FujiTV broadcast of the 43rd Nihon ozumo tournament on MioMio http://www.miomio.tv/watch/cc420864/ (best to get with youtube-dl)

Main commentator was Shibatayama

As always, there is a total lack of wraps. tape and braces for these matches.  "Look good" stuff rather than anything close to real competition.

It was fun to watch. Obviously the participants weren't going all out, but Yoshikaze, Abi, and Takayasu (the eventual winner) all looked good. The highlight of the evening was Yoshikaze's massive Tsuridashi of Shohozan during their semi-final bout. I've never seen that from him before.

Kisenosato also made his debut as a commentator. He probably spoke more during the 70-minute program than he had during his entire sumo career. It was surreal seeing him in a suit instead of a mawashi, but I thought he provided some insightful commentary, and hope we'll see him in the booth during future NHK broadcasts.

As we approach this year's edition of the Fuji TV tournament I just noticed I didn't get around to posting last year's full results at the time. So, before the official tournament site removes that data soon to make room for 2020...

A sad reminder of when Takayasu was still flying high.
