Araiso-oyakata plans NFL training methods

Recommended Posts

Araiso-oyakata from the Haru-basho on will start as sports commentator for the Sponichi paper, joining Tamanoi-oyakata (whose corner is not on the net).

At a visit to the Sponichi headquarters today, ex-Kise declared that he plans to adopt American football NFL training methods to rear his (future) deshi. His plans for after the danpatsu-shiki end of September: "The NFL uses the latest training methods. I'd like to go to learn." "Sumo builds the body with keiko, but the built of the Japanese has become like the people from overseas, so we should be able to use these methods in sumo as well."

He's feeling good: "My condition is terrific. With the stress having disappeared, my body feels light."

Can’t help but feel that he’s calling someone fat. Just can’t tell who.

It would be great if he adopted some of the nutritional methods as well, although some of this (during jungyo) may be beyond his control.

More sophisticated and a wider array of training methods are often what makes the difference, especially at the very top. I'm quite excited to see how he's going to employ what he learns.

No you're not, NFL has one of the most comprehensive and thorough PED-controlling procedures to be seen

They still don't pass in the simple visual test...Just look to the guys. The world its an ugly place full with greedy people...The only two sports where i believe are 100% steroids free are curling and chess...And even in chess we hearded some dark rumors of bizarre experiments like they did with Mr.Fischer...:-P

With that, let's get this thread back on track. It is well documented that Kisenosato loves American football and I for one am very interested to see how he moves forward with this plan. Does Tagonoura stable have a weight room in the basement or a gym nearby?

I believe Naruto Oyakata also has spoken about employing modern training methods at his stable, although not necessarily from the NFL. It'll be interesting to see if new, innovative approaches to training instituted by the incoming crop of oyakata who are less bound by tradition will bear significantly improved results.

Best thing about this - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Replacements_(film - this movie I love about American football, they do the exact opposite in hiring a sumo wrestler to play lineman during players' strike. That's what actually inspired me to get back to following sumo, the idea of rikishi being strong and capable enough to compete with NFL-level linemen.

But anyways, both directions of knowledge sharing make sense, linemen and rikishi both have very similar goals - to push other people out of their desired position, and to do this at short intervals of play while being as explosive as possible during these intervals, so the strength training and conditioning of linemen in NFL/NCAA should be quite useful thing to do for sumo. I mean, just look at James Harrison's training videos, the guy is strong as f*ck, and has maintained this level of power well into his 30s.

So, while the NFL/NCAA methods for american football might not be of much use teaching proper technique (especially yotsu-wise), as far as strength/conditioning, regeneration and maybe some pushing moves go the NFL/NCAA methods could be very useful.

What do you expect when russians (or ex-soviets in general) are involved? Especially the russian doping system is well documented.

I hope they look into sports medicine and therapy more. That should be an area close to Araiso’s heart. You know, where one of the career-ending injuries was.

I expect nothing less than evil cheating plans! The cases of Ben Jonsonov, Marionina Jonesatcheva, Florencka Griffith-Joynerova and Lancev Armstrongvitch, really showed us that we can't rely on Bolsheviks. :-P

Anyway; good luck, ex-Kise!

When the Soviets first started employing PEDs, the athletes referred to it as "American training"...

Us old timers remember the bad ol' days of huffing stew and OD'ing on poteen.  They cleaned up the sport for awhile, until the early 2000's when the traumatic arrival of flannel-sniffing hit the sport like a wet moose.

Oh boy, did this thread venture off topic!

Guys, how about discussing Araiso-oyakata and his plans to use different training methods for a change?

I applaud Araiso for this move. It's always a good idea to have a look at new methods. If it doesn't prove successful, you can always fall back into old patterns. You can see in other sports how new training methods have boosted results.

In American football, offensive linemen are huge and tall, but they have to be quick.  They cannot (legally) hold their opponent, but they learn hand-check skills, and they have to have superior footwork.  The dream of every offensive lineman is the "pancake block", in which they drive their opponent backwards and onto the ground.  Incidentally, in terms of IQ's, statistically OL guys are at the top -- often engineering majors in college; an NFL tackle has written a master's thesis on numerical analysis.

IMHO, some of the physical training has Sumo equivalents (blocking sled -> butsukari, though lineman work as a team), but the  breakthrough that NFL team trainers have made is in knowing the types, duration, and combination of exercises that maximize the increase in power, strength, speed and flexibility without causing injury.
