Yusho Portraits

That scowl looks a little out of character -- it reminds me of yusho portraits of Akebono.

The fellow on the right looks like he could be Terunofuji's Dad.  That must be ... Satonifuji?

If so, he's older than Futagoyama.  Wow, what a trooper!

At the photo shoot for the hatsu basho yusho portrait of Mitakeumi - a nice and different portrait if they use that

They didn't use the photo above, it's just an ordinary yusho portrait for Mitakeumi's hatsu basho win

I have to say, I love that kabuto kesho-mawashi.

It really should have come to me earlier, but this picture is poignant for a reason: the two items on the keshō-mawashi are significant to why the three brothers bear the shikona they do.

The parable of the three arrows is well known, as is their naming after the Sengoku daimyō Mōri Motonari's sons, but the helmet is less obvious - that is an image of Mōri Motonari's helmet.

I can't be arsed to look through more reputable Japanese sources, so an English link from a replica store will have to do: https://samuraistore.com/products/mouri-helmet

Now that is fantastic. Thanks for pointing that out!

The yusho portrait of Abi for Kyushu 2022 o

9.jpg

Original 3.17mx2.265m (59kg) - the 32cmx23cm (10%x10%) miniature version is sold by Mainichi for 111 800yen, including tax and shipping within Japan

I haven't found the exact size of the replica the rikishi gets, the one at the award ceremony looks 95cmx68cm (30%x30%)

The NSK posted a video of putting the yusho portraits of Terunofuji and Ichinojo on the kokugikan wall for the presentation at the Aki basho

The 2nd yusho portrait of Kisenosato was removed today from the kokugikan wall and replaced with that of Tamawashi - no portrait any more of a Japanese born yokozuna now on the walls o

The last time it took over 10 years till the next Jp-y portrait was put on the wall, when that of Takanohana's last yusho was removed

I guess that means the next time they remove portraits we'll have no more portraits of Harumafuji hanging up there.

And here I thought Harumafuji was long gone when Kise became Yokozuna...

Tamawashi and Abi getting smaller versions of their yusho portraits to take home, I imagine.
