Rainoyama 1,157 Posted May 15, 2019 Nikkan gives an update on Takakeisho's injury in this article. Looks like a right knee injury... according to the article Takakeisho went back to the dressing room and put some ice on the inner part of his knee right away without taking a bath. "すぐには風呂に入らず右膝内側をアイシングした" Asked about his condition by the journalists he answered "I'm ok", "I'm not feeling pain" he added, but didn't give any more detail regarding the severity of the injury. On winning today to avoid consecutive losses "That was huge. When you lose two in a row it can escalate and you can lose three in row. I needed to be careful". Kyujo may happen later if the injury is serious but according to the journalist Takakeisho seemed eager to continue past day 5 "I got the win today that's the most important thing" he concluded. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201905150000642.html 1
Rainoyama 1,157 Posted May 15, 2019 (edited) More from Chris Gould's excellent youtube channel and it doesn't look good for Takakeisho. Kyujo is strongly considered now. Edited May 15, 2019 by Rainoyama 4
since_94 650 Posted May 15, 2019 I’ll save others the need to google: The knee pit, known in medicine as the popliteal fossa, is the hollow region located just behind the bone forming the knee joint So yeah, it’s a thing. Who knew?
inhashi 2,363 Posted May 16, 2019 (edited) He was icing that knee pit in shitakubeya telling press that he was ok, it does not hurt. Yet now Sponichi has released that he is kyujo as of day 5 :( Injured MCL, needing three weeks of treatment. Edited May 16, 2019 by inhashi kyujo announced for day 5 not day 4 1 2
Eikokurai 3,437 Posted May 16, 2019 (edited) He’s kyujo, no? Ah, I see inhashi already said so above. :) Edited May 16, 2019 by Eikokurai
Rocks 1,809 Posted May 16, 2019 Wow, very tough luck. At least he is resting it right away. Tamawashi is not the guy you want to face with an injury.
Tiger Tanaka 225 Posted May 16, 2019 Rest up and get well soon Takekeisho. We all want to see you back in Nagoya getting your 8 and more.
Fukuyamada 42 Posted May 16, 2019 It seems like a wise and sensible decision to withdraw and recover. Hope he takes as much time off as necessary and doesn't rush it.
Rainoyama 1,157 Posted May 16, 2019 Takakeisho decided to go kyujo indeed. He went to diffrent hospitals this morning to get MRIs and other tests to evaluate his injury. According to nikkan, he damaged the medial collateral ligament of the inner part of his right knee. (右膝内側側副靱帯(じんたい)損傷). His oyakata had a very responsible approach, and made me wish more of his colleagues follow his example. "Doing sumo in that state is unreasonable, he shouldn't endanger his career. I want him to take all his time to heal" he declared. Tamawashi gets the freebie. Assuming Takakeisho doesn't reenter, which seems highly unlikely according to his oyakata he'll be kadoban in Nagoya. "Takakeisho himself is the one who's the most disappointed and frustrated, I believe he wanted to continue" continued Chiganoura oyakata "While I respected his feeling I had the intention of making him go kyujo from the beginning" https://www.nikkansports.com/m/battle/sumo/news/201905160000230_m.html?mode=all 1

ryafuji 815 Posted May 16, 2019 Chiganoura has also been quoted as saying, ""He said he wants to sit out the meet because he's feeling pain. It must really hurt because he rarely says he's hurt" so I'm not sure Takakeisho needed that much persuading.

Bumpkin 438 Posted May 16, 2019 Ozeki Takakeisho needs either 8 wins in Nagoya or 10 wins in Aki to keep/regain his rank. He should be good.
Jabbamaru 167 Posted May 16, 2019 Shit, what a bummer. On his last fight against the Hack one movement that really took my atencion was a hattakikomi defense where he bended insanely bad his knee but maneged to keep on his feet. Watching the replay against Mita, if im correct, the movement was much more light...what a bad luck. I guess his round shape puts intense pressure on his knees. Anyway...its hard to know his condition. In my sloppy research i readed that this kind of injury has many levels...may take days or months to heal. Lets hope this not screw his ozeki carrer. It's worth what his worth but the NHK announcers always mention the time needed to recover from the injury when they announce a kyujo, as we all know it's not reliable at all people heal differently. This morning they announced a three weeks rest was needed. He is young I reckon he'll be fine for next basho, it's really important that he does serious rehabilitation though to limit the risk of reinjuring that knee .
Kintamayama 45,158 Posted June 6, 2019 Takakeishou will resume training sometime around the last third of June, says Chiganoura Oyakata. He has been seeing a knee specialist and is acting according to the specialist's recommendations, doing some rehabilitation and physical strength training. "He is in the hospital and is concentrating on rehabilitation and medical treatment. He will probably not train in Tokyo. Time is the best medicine. He's headed in the right direction, " said the Oyakata. "Our objective is to enter Nagoya. I think he's a bit impatient, but if he heals fully he has the solid ability to do well," summed Chiganoura 5
Mogami 6 Posted June 11, 2019 I really hope he'll make atleast a 8-7 Kachi in July. Having him demoted already after the min. possible of 2 Basho's would be a real stinker. Fingers Crossed !
Kintamayama 45,158 Posted June 11, 2019 Now they're saying he will start training tomorrow. He is able to do shiko now, so he decided he's ready to start training, as he had stated that he will start training when he can do shiko.
Rainoyama 1,157 Posted June 12, 2019 As Kintamayama reported Takakeisho started to do some training today. He did shiko and squat for about 40 minutes. It was the first time he put on a mawashi since his second kyujo last basho. "I don't think I am fully healed yet. There is still some stiffness in the muscle" he commented Training and rehabilitation were encouraging today but Takakeisho seems careful about the preparation "I don't kwow what will happen tomorow" he said. "I think I still have a long career in sumo ahead of me. If I'm not ready in time I'll just fight hard again to come back" Pictures from the article https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201906120000751.html 1
Kintamayama 45,158 Posted June 12, 2019 (edited) "There is still stiffness in the knee. The muscles around the knee are trying to protect it and are causing the stiffness, so it's important to try to relax those muscles," he said. The pain seems to have subsided a bit. "I've gotten a bit closer to being able to do sumo worthy of an Ozeki. If the treatment will not bring results, there is a possibility to wait till next basho and attempt to heal," he added, hinting at a possibility of a Nagoya kyujo. He is working with a team consisting of a personal trainer, a knee specialist and a doctor and is taking advice from them. "Doing hundreds of shikos can cause the inflammation to return, so I'm discussing the right numbers. I'm still a novice, I don't have the experience to decide on my own," he said. Today's regimen was three sets of 50 shikos and 20 squats. "I'm a bit ahead of the plan so I put the mawashi on a week earlier than planned. This can all change if something goes wrong," he added. The team's aim is to get him to do sumo between ten days and a week before the basho starts. He may lose his Ozeki rank if he gets a makekoshi. "I'm not worried at all. My body and knee aren't moving well but I have grown inside. All I can do is think positive. I have no choice but to go about it differently with some wild ideas.." he summed. Nantonoyama 252 Posted June 12, 2019 He seems to receive proper advice from professionals and have a long-term approach of his career. It is healthier on many grounds, even if it could cost him his rank for Aki.
