Akinomaki 40,744 Posted May 30, 2019 Starting with the Aki basho, the cost per kensho for the sponsors goes up by 8000Yen to 70 000. The money in the envelopes stays the same: 30 000Yen cash on the day. The amount saved by the NSK for the rikishi rises by 3300Yen to also 30 000Yen, and the NSK takes the rest: nearly double now: 4700 more to 10 000Yen. http://www.daily.co.jp/general/2019/05/30/0012379716.shtml 4
Amamaniac 2,079 Posted May 30, 2019 (edited) While listening to the NHK English commentary during the Summer tournament, I heard one person say that a small percent of the kensho sponsor money actually goes to the yobidashi. Is there any truth to this claim? Edited May 30, 2019 by Amamaniac

Is there any truth to this claim? The money the NSK keeps is partly for the yobidashi carrying and the gyoji announcing it - but that the yobidashi actually might get something more when they actually carry a kensho banner is new to me: it is part of their work description and should be covered by their pay. With double money for the NSK, the papers might dig into that part in detail.

Gurowake 4,099 Posted May 31, 2019 It's just a question of economics: supply and demand. If the rikishi aren't demanding more from each kensho but they think they can bring in more revenue by increasing the kensho cost, then they'll keep the bulk of the increase for themselves. Asashosakari 19,637 Posted June 3, 2019 (edited) Callback: On 13/05/2014 at 07:00, Akinomaki said: With the VAT increase to 8% in Japan, the kensho costs for the sponsors have risen from 60 000 to 62 000 Yen per kensho. The part the NSK keeps for costs (yobidashi, announcing etc.) rises from 5000 to 5300 Yen, the part they keep for the taxes and social insurance (pension fund) of the rikishi rises from 25 000 to 26 700. The money the rikishi receives in the envelope remains at 30 000 Yen. Probably not so coincidentally, a second VAT increase from 8% to 10% that was originally scheduled for 2015 (and then twice postponed) is now supposed to be finally enacted in October this year. As for the Kyokai bumping up their administrative fee, to be fair it had been - outside of the aforementioned tax-related increase five years ago - unchanged since way back in 1991, all the while rikishi salaries increased significantly throughout the 1990s (and again this year after that long stagnation phase). Edit: Oh, self-pat-on-the-back time, from the salary increase thread: On 02/12/2018 at 18:42, Asashosakari said: Kensho will presumably be adjusted again if/when the planned sales tax increase to 10% finally goes through. Akinomaki 40,744 Posted September 5, 2019 (edited) Terutsuyoshi gets kensho from his hometown Minami-Awaji - support for him and PR for the city, which costs them about 1.1. million yen: about 60 000 yen for the banner and 15 times now 70 000 yen for one kensho each day. o Other new kensho banners for the basho o o o No complete last basho kensho list or standings this basho: the Nikkan banzuke is total crap this time, both for mochi-kyukin and kensho: e.g Shohozan is listed with 595.35 kensho this year. Akinomaki 40,744 Posted September 6, 2019 (edited) The number of kensho applied for at the moment is 2113 - 175 less than last year Aki. Top in personal kensho is Takakeisho with 193, then Mitakeumi with 126 and Endo with 113 (Takayasu would have been high up - I guess with 175). Goeido has 98, Abi 71, Kakuryu 67, Tochinoshin 63 - and Hakuho ? Just 19!!! YouTuber Hajime_Syacho has announced that he'll place 1 each day on Asanoyama - same prefecture and generation. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201909060000498.html This is the first time a YouTuber places kensho - the NSK asks him not to put the kensho parade on YT - for reason of broadcast rights - he acknowledged. http://www.asahi.com/articles/ASM9654KJM96UTQP01F.html I have put kensho parades on YT that I filmed myself - and the parades don't get broadcasted - the NSK has no right to prevent having someone film the parade for him and put it on YT. The NSK announced that the basho got the most kensho ever, but only 2160 get reported No reason given why in the end more than 100 less kensho where placed than were reported to have been applied for, just that there were more applications after the deadline for that - maybe they had been included in the 2273. Day 15 tied the record of 175 for most kensho on one day. Edited September 7, 2019 by Akinomaki
Akinomaki 40,744 Posted September 8, 2019 (edited) For not in the last bout, Hokutofuji was lucky to beat Hakuho at least on day 1 - later it will be even less to gain. One of the 13 was the Morinaga-sho voted by the sweets eating spectators. Enho has not enough sponsors yet for the rankings - he had 3 Day 1 42: Kakuryu 20: Takakeisho 13: Hokutofuji 12: Asanoyama 8: Goeido 7: Ryuden 7: Okinoumi 6: Ichinojo 4: Terutsuyoshi 4: Tomokaze Edited September 8, 2019 by Akinomaki
