It can handle the initial assessment/treatment of the injury.  The heyas probably have their preferred specialists in Tokyo for the evaluation and treatment of sumo injuries...

Must be the same specialist who gives "2 weeks rest" doctor's notes for any injury.

I also find it hard to believe that a city of 1.6 million people in a country at the forefront of medicine like Japan cannot handle a case like this...

At the forefront? That's quite a stretch. Those of us from nations with advanced medical care are better able to spot the witch-doctoring that goes on and avoid it, but the locals tend to be quite unaware. Musashimaru went to Saga for surgery on his injured wrist. Was never the same rikishi again. Madness.

I doubt he's finished. He was still a yusho contender as recently as May, and he has a young family to provide for.

May was his first Ozekiwake tournament where he was battling to get back to his rank and he barely scraped over the line, only making it on day 14, even with a fusensho. It was clear he was struggling that basho but battled through his ailments for the sake of his rank. He may have mathematically been in the yusho race, but he wasn’t a serious contender. Take this special circumstance away and he hasn’t managed a winning record since his 8-7 a year ago. He’s a broken rikishi.

NHK also reports Wakatakakage as kyujo from Day 5 - one month to recover from what Google translates as "dislocation near the right foot instep", so perhaps a Lisfranc/metatarsal dislocation.

This jiji article might clear things up a bit. It mentions something called 'ショパール関節' I wonder if this could be Chopart's joint? (aka Transverse tarsal?)

If anything, some of these injuries should shine a light on how these are managed and what improvements could be made. Do the heyas and the NSK have the resources to improve the standard of care and rehabilitation for injured rikishi though? I highly doubt it. Could they still improve though? I believe so.

Its been a devastating tournament for injuries so far, and I hate to say it but i'm expecting to see Takayasu withdraw at some point as well (likely after he achieves the wins he needs). Also, Mitakeumi hasn't been the same since the cut over his eye; I wonder if he's actually concussed and is hiding it?

Not sure I remember any other basho where they had to re-arrange the sekitori schedules twice due to late withdrawals...

Anyway, apparently no movement in the lower divisions for Day 9.

Unfortunately it looks like another injury setback for Masunoyama, he suffered a left leg (perhaps knee) injury at the end of his bout against Dewanojo yesterday, he tries to shake it off but eventually has to stop halfway down the hanamichi. Fusenpai today.

Quite sad to see him struggling to walk and no one helps the poor guy.

Does Gagamaru have an official injury listed? Or is he just getting old?

I posted this in the spoiler thread, but he had a knee injury after aki basho and got 3 liters of water drained from it in total. He says he still doesn't want to retire yet and can still do it even though he's going down to makushita.

My own opinion is that he hasn't been doing superb sumo for a while, I don't think recovering from the knee injury will change that too much. Maybe he just wants to apply for citizenship? The only thing I know about him is that he really loves natto.
