2019 Kyushu Basho Discussion (spoiler alert)

Perhaps, just perhaps, more importantly he has protected his pole position in the race for most Top Division wins in 2019.  And he is now the only wrestler trailing Hakuho by one loss.  It doesn't hurt that he got his KK today too!

Well, it was the KK which put him in pole position for Sekiwake. :)

Abi can still pip him to it but I doubt it. Asa has a two-win advantage and I can see him getting double digits, so after that it comes down to what Mitakeumi can manage from here on out. Asa could end the year in a great high.

Yes, Abi can pip Asanoyama to the most wins in 2019 title, especially since Asa leads that race by only one win.

Let's say Mitakeumi gets his KK thereby protecting his Sekiwake status.  I would speculate that if Asanoyama does get double digits and ends up with the junyusho or even yusho, the Judging Committee would open up an extra Sekiwake slot for him on the next banzuke.  Having three or four Sekiwake has happened multiple times in the past.

Let's just say that we are hoping for the same thing(s).  Asashoryu [i.e., Asanoyama] may just emerge as the next great thing in sumo.

Asashoryu has had his day, hehe.

As for Asanoyama, I actually had forgotten he was battling Abi for the annual win total prize too.

Sounds like gagamaru is in bad shape - after the Aki basho they drained 280mL of water from his knee in one session. A total of 3 liters was drained.

Ouch! Wouldn't be surprised if he won't show up anymore after his 9th loss today.

With all those close records in the top division there should be plenty of meaningful bouts over the next 5 days.

He has the "injured knee" look in his matches now.  As a person with a ruined knee I can tell you, it is almost impossible to will your knee to do things it can't do.  When you see a big strong rikishi fail to "dig in" when he's being pushed back, that's his knee telling him "no."

Terutsuyoshi was so fired up he even took the envelopes with authority. lol. That was really funny. Good win, though. Really nice moves from Ishiura, too!

Asanoyama's future is looking bright, provided he keeps his body from getting wrecked. You saw him today, calm, cool, in total control of the bout. I'm not gonna say it, because I don't wanna jinx him, but he looks like...

Abi is so spindly he doesn't look all that strong, but I guess he must be to do Hokutofuji like that. Had a bit of a rough patch at the end of last year, but he seems to be well and thoroughly over it now.

Two more wins for him, and he will be the only Top Division wrestler with a perfect KK record in 2019 (i.e., six straight KKs)!

3-4 mattas per day does not seem particularly high.  Strange they did not become an issue until they affected the beloved Enho.

Ishiura today by okuridashi (maybe my new favorite winning technique). I suppose, given his even record, there's no chance of a technique prize? And, for the technique prize, is it actually helpful to use unusual kimarite or is it given typically and simply for excellent execution of technique?

I was curious if there's a record of overall winning kimarite in makouchi, not just by particular wrestlers? I poked around a little bit without finding it, but somehow I'm guessing it's on this forum somewhere... I know that Ishiura already used the very rare mitokorozeme this basho, but I think his other three wins may be by more conventional kimarite.

I rather remember crying on this subject last year, before Enho even made it to makouchi. The gyoji seemed to have had a pow-wow early this year and now actually want the wrestlers to put both hands down together before beginning (although it's less than universally observed).

How many mattamattamattas only by Mr.K?

Since you asked: 8 so far (i.e., 23.5%). (Gyoji...)

I got the impression that Takakeisho may have been seeing stars after his head-on-head tachiai with Kotoyuki today.  Even the ringside judge (shinpan) seemed to be be concerned (assuming that that is what he asked Takakeisho about when the latter resumed sitting – shinpan rarely if ever have verbal exchanges with wrestlers!).  How many concussions do there have to be before sumo wrestlers start wearing helmets?

For the record, Konosuke has been mixing up his wardrobe ever since he got promoted to sanyaku In January of this year.

Oh, was that what triggered the change? I simply assumed that he learned how to separate whites from colours at the laundromat.

I bet this happens before they decide to lower the dohyo.

I'm more excited for Makushita today than Makkuchi, lol.

There are some really good match ups in Makkuchi today though.

I'm wondering if come January we see 3 Sekiwake and go back to 2 Komusubi. I feel like we'd have Takayasu, Asanoyama, and possibly Abi up in Sekiwake and we'd have Mitakeumi and Hokutofuji at Komusubi? I'm unsure but it's just a thought?

You have time for that till his danpatsu-shiki - he is still also a rest of Yoshikaze till then, when he appears on the dohyo for the last time and officially takes on the toshiyori name.

They were talking about the danpatsu-shiki! I forget when but I think they said it would take part sometime late next year? I felt he got a little quiet when they mentioned it, like he didn't want to let people hear the emotion in his voice.
