Even the ringside judge (shinpan) seemed to be be concerned (assuming that that is what he asked Takakeisho about when the latter resumed sitting – shinpan rarely if ever have verbal exchanges with wrestlers!). How many concussions do there have to be before sumo wrestlers start wearing helmets? I believe I saw a thin trickle of blood from Takakeisho's eye.
Katooshu Posted November 19, 2019 Posted November 19, 2019 Ya looks a bit marked up, that or he has a thing for red/pink eye make-up 1

I suppose, given his even record, there's no chance of a technique prize? And, for the technique prize, is it actually helpful to use unusual kimarite or is it given typically and simply for excellent execution of technique? I was curious if there's a record of overall winning kimarite in makouchi, not just by particular wrestlers? I poked around a little bit without finding it, but somehow I'm guessing it's on this forum somewhere... I know that Ishiura already used the very rare mitokorozeme this basho, but I think his other three wins may be by more conventional kimarite. People often assume it’s for unusual techniques, but technically (ahem) it’s for execution. Okuridashi isn’t all that unusual though. It’s not seen loads just because you have to get behind your opponent to do it, but nor is it rare. Usually it occurs less as a result of a plan and more because the bout ended up being a bit of a mess. It’s an opportunistic kimarite. As for kimarite data, are you familiar with the sumo database? If not, you’re going to have fun: http://sumodb.sumogames.de/ Here’s the data for okuridashi in Makuuchi (all time): http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Query_bout.aspx?show_form=0&m=on&kimarite=31&onlyw1=on As you’ll see, there have already been three instances of it just this basho. Konosato Posted November 20, 2019 Posted November 20, 2019 No Yusho in Jonidan for Ura who lost today against Chiyotora, 16 years, from Kokonoe 1
Akinomaki Posted November 20, 2019 Posted November 20, 2019 Kotoyuki should skip the chiri-chouzu at the start of the shikiri preparations - it is meant to show that you fight with your bare hands 3
Eikokurai Posted November 20, 2019 Posted November 20, 2019 (edited) Takakeisho makes his eight and finally gets his first Ozeki kachikoshi in his third basho at the rank. Of course, this means there’s very little drama to be played out over the final four days. The yusho is Hakuho’s to lose, which he won’t, and there isn’t much else going on. I guess the only thing to keep an eye on is whether Mitakeumi can KK and then whether Daieisho can challenge for a Komusubi slot, plus the usual KK chases. Edited November 20, 2019 by Eikokurai

Does anyone know why?

Kintamayama Posted November 20, 2019 Posted November 20, 2019 Again, Kounosuke did not call a clear matta in the Enhou match. You bad people have broken my man. He hardly utters a sound now. And is back to pink. I object! 1 3 1

Well he only does oshi zumo, I think the reason he is doing this is to keep his fingers together when he slaps and avoid injury, he has a valid reason and taping is allowed I don't see why he couldn't

I’m not so sure. Generally people wear supports on joints that are already injured. Perhaps he is doing that, but then his hands have been hurt for a very long time. 1
neonbelly Posted November 20, 2019 Posted November 20, 2019 Alright, we're at that part of the tournament where Hakuho will matta twice before every match.
Eikokurai Posted November 20, 2019 Posted November 20, 2019 (edited) Ooh ... an utchari from Shodai. Very nice. Nishikigi has a makekoshi every basho this year, right? Poor chap. Edited November 20, 2019 by Eikokurai

When the fingers are tapped together there's a lower chance to bend one of them awkwardly while slapping plus as you said it can support an already injured finger

Boxers can hit each other way harder with gloves than they can bare-knuckled because they don't cause themselves damage when they do. Covering the hand in mittens of tape should have the same effect--one can hit people harder than he otherwise would. (If for no other reason than tape is less pleasant than skin to get slapped with.) 1
