2019 Kyushu Basho Discussion (spoiler alert)

Recommended Posts

Incidentally, Hoshoryu's stablemate Meisei is going through an even worse downturn, losing 7 of his last 8. Akua to save the day!

For the first time the sekitori with the most losses in the year will exceed the total of his counterpoint, the rikishi with the most wins. That dubious honour goes to Nishikigi, whose year of make-koshi has accumulated 57 losses so far - Asanoyama and Shimanoumi (counting two Juryo basho) can muster 56 wins at most if they win their remaining two bouts.

Hakuho being the dai yokozuna shouldn't, in the eyes fo the YDC, use such techniques. He gets flagged for it from time to time but never fully abandon's the move nor his stubbornness.

Weather it's right or wrong for a Yokozuna to strike is based on opinion, still it has been controversial since the times of Maedayama.

It's absolutely right for a yokozuna, like any other rikishi, to follow the rules of sumo. That includes using accepted, allowable  techniques.

However, when one is promoted to yokozuna and becomes extremely successful, he is then requested to abandon a completely legal technique. It is said  that such behavior is not worthy of someone holding such a high rank. Of course, his opponents can still use that same technique against him. The YDC and NSK sometimes come up with opinions that make no sense. This happens to be one of the more ridiculous ones.

Hakuho is not being stubborn. He's just following the rules.

Having a komusubi as the last in line at the dohyo-iri likely won't happen often in a basho, and on top of that 3 in a row - a first? A reminder that only 2 are above them who still take part (in that dohyo-iri).

Enho keeps his kachikoshi hopes alive going into final day. The schedule isn’t up yet, so I’ve no idea who he faces for it. Possible Darwin match options (at the time of writing) include Kotoyuki and Tamawashi.

Shodai tried another utchari but it was too late - maybe a sansho on condition to win tomorrow, maybe even without, as having been in the race till near the end.

Shukun-sho ensured, now one more win for Daieiesho to make the komusubi promotion perfect.

Okinoumi politely expressed his wish to the NSK officials to have them ban the gloves of Kotoyuki.

Abi gets his third straight sanyaku kachi-koshi.

He and Asanoyama will probably be the two Sekiwake in January.  Chances are that Asanoyama will leap-frog Abi into the the top position in the east...

P.S., Abi picked up 22 kensho prizes on that steal!

Hakuho was on a mission in this tournament.  At times it wasn't pretty, but he was all business, and did what he needed to do to get the job done.  Throughout this tournament, you could see just how focused he was.

First, he broke his own record and registered his 43rd Top Division championship.  Second, he secured his first championship in the new Reiwa era.  Third, he won his first championship as a Japanese citizen.  And fourth, he got his second championship this year, being the only wrestler to get two championships in 2019 – reminding everyone that his dominance is still somewhat intact.

So he will go into 2020 feeling confident that his presence in competitive sumo is still valid and he is still relevant.  #theGOATrules

I don't think Shodai will get a prize as he has only achieved what would have been expected of him at that rank.  I would expect shukun-sho for Daeisho, kanto-sho for Asanoyama and maybe not much else.

Speaking of sansho: Myogiryu has beaten one Ozeki, one Sekiwake, and three Komusubi.

Granted, Takayasu and Tochinoshin didn't present much of a challenge, but would it be totally unreasonable to give him some prize if he wins tomorrow?

Edit: And he has beaten Shodai who was still in the yusho race today!

I don't see Abi getting the nod, I don't even think 9-6 will cut it. Asanoyama and Takayasu at Sekiwake with 2-3 Komusubi IMO.

I did almost change it to four.

What have we got... a demoted Mitakeumi, safe Abi, Daieisho 8-6 from M1, Endo 7-7.

Yeah I take it back. 3-4.

Yeah I take it back. 2-4.

Daieisho is 8-6, so if he wins he's a sure sanyaku, K at least :-) such fun!

Well, it seems that lower sanyaku is his ceiling (single digit KKs and somehow even this looks difficult for him), and such guys never get enough respect - I don't get why so, to hold onto such a position for mupltiple tournaments of KK is a prized achievement in it's own right.

And to think Abi is only 25yrs old, who knows where his record might stand in 10yrs!

Don't rule out the possibility that Takayasu will be given the S2e slot.

Ah, touche! That said I'm still not sure another 9-6 from Abi would cut it...

Abi forfeited all respect with SNS. At least Daieisho  should now get some.
