Kimarite Statistics - 2019 Kyushu

Recommended Posts

Hi all, below are the kimarite statistics for all divisions in the final basho of 2019, in which Yokozuna Hakuho claimed his 43rd Makuuchi yusho. Abi, Kotonowaka and Kotoshoho share the honour of achieving kachi-koshi in all six basho, while much further down the ranks there was some joy at last for Higohikari, who registered his first kachi-koshi in five years.

You wait eight years for a mitokorozeme to turn up, and then a second one follows right behind. Here it was Ishiura who performed the rare kimarite, combining a sotogake with a leg grab as he and Nishikigi toppled out of the dohyo.

Maybe Fujinoteru has discovered the secret weakness of Shikihide-beya rikishi - tsutaezori! While not the first rikishi to chalk up multiple tsutaezori wins, he is the first to do it twice in the same basho, and both of his victims were from that heya.

Kizenryu got his basho off to a successful start with a harimanage win on Shonichi, as he sought to end a run of three straight 3-4 records. Later in the basho that looked unlikely as he had to be helped away (direct video link, not database) from the dohyo after a hard fall, but to his credit he did get his kachi-koshi in his final bout, winning with his speciality uwatenage, the 138th of his career.

Tobizaru showed patience in recording the only kekaeshi of this basho, waiting for an opportunity and then striking quickly as Akua stepped forward just a bit too far. It's the 6th kekaeshi win of Tobizaru's career, drawing him level with Kizenryu for most among active rikishi.

Last basho I mentioned that zubuneri had not been seen for ten consecutive basho, a new record, but thanks to Satonofuji that run has come to an end here - he moved to 2-0 with a win against Bushi on Day 3. It was the 24th zubuneri win of his long career, ten more than any other rikishi in the available records.

Speaking of Satonofuji, on Nakabi he came up against an equally-gifted rikishi in the form of Mori. Satonofuji got into a rather awkward position and applied an uchigake, only for Mori to suddenly sweep away his standing leg for an excellent susoharai win, the first of his career in fact.

Amanoshima seems to have settled into the Makushita division lately, fighting at his highest career rank for the third consecutive basho. This time he chalked up the 33rd ashitori win of his career this basho, a quick and planned move which adds Takakento to his long list of victims.

Sorakaze secured his kachi-koshi on Day 12 with a chongake win against Tenei. He is the second active rikishi to have more than one chongake win, although he has a long way to go to catch the other one, Kyokutaisei, with 16!

Ebisumaru and Suzuki both thought they'd lost their encounter on Day 7 - as the action approached the edge it looked like Suzuki was going to try a last-ditch ipponzeoi, but in fact that action served to make Ebisumaru step over the tawara first for an isamiashi loss. There was no such confusion for the basho's only fumidashi though, as Wakaichiro stepped out against Teraoumi.

Kimarite from kettei-sen bouts are not included in the statistics.

Tochinoshin's day four defeat of Takarafuji was only the 19th usage of kubihineri in the top division and the first since July 2010.

Sokubiotoshi made it's 88th Makuuchi appearance and the first in almost three years (Hatsu 2017 was the previous time). It took a Juryo visitor to do it though (Azamaryu against Daishomaru on day 13).

One paragraph somehow got lost from the notes, regarding two rikishi who use leg techniques occasionally:

Tagonofuji had two similar sotogake wins in his fine 6-1 record, hooking his opponent's leg while moving forward to drop them to the ground. And on the final day, Tanahashi produced a lovely nimaigeri against the much larger Karatsuumi.

And finally, here are the percentages for 2019. Yorikiri was back on top as the most common kimarite overall, accounting for 25.4% of bouts, but oshidashi wasn't far behind. It's the fourth year in a row with a less-than-1% difference between the two. Makuuchi was almost a dead heat, with just a single yorikiri more.

Number Bunshun again posted an analysis of the year's kimarite.

Last year was the first time in history that oshidashi was more frequent than yorikiri http://number.bunshun.jp/articles/-/833012, this year it dropped behind again, but the tsuki-oshi techniques as a whole continue to soar. Looking just at makuuchi data since 1955, a frequent result of tsukioshi charges, tsukiotoshi the last 4 years had more than 120 occurrences each year,  in the '60s it was on average 69.5. Tsukidashi in the 60s and 70s had about 50, dropped below 40 the next 30 years, but in the 2010s reached again 54 on average. This year with 79 it has the 2nd most appearances after 1969.

The author sees the reason for the many matta recently in the rise of tsukioshi style sumo: to get the advantage at the tachiai, the rikishi try to start in their own rhythm, and not as required in (breathing) sync with the opponent.

As opposed to tsukioshi types, an all time low was seen for shitatenage, sukuinage and tsuridashi. Sukuinage was at 4.5% in 1968 and is down to 1.1%, shitatenage from 3.8% in 1978 to 1% - they dropped below katazukashi.

Tsuridashi was at 9.4% in 1971 - then close to oshidashi - and had only 1 occurrence this year: 0.06%: the weight increase.

And fusensho have an all time high now as well - way above sukuinage in numbers.

The kubihineri just *had* to be against Takarafuji, didn't?  The rikishi for whom the meaning of "kubi" is slightly extended...

Maybe it was a chi-kubihineri? It hurts to just imagine what that would look like...

A kokubihineri, as in kotenage, komatasukui and kozumatori, etc.
