Recommended Posts

We already had the most wins of the year award for Asanoyama search/?q=Asanoyama most wins year&type=topic=39431&and, today the Nikkan (odd) awards started to appear on the net and the other proper awards will be announced soon - 2018: topic/best-rikishi-awards-2018

Nikkan has thought of something new for the 8th year of their peculiar awards: today the one team award - for the heya with the most divisional yusho this year. The katakana term "one team"  ワンチーム is among the phrases of the year, that inspired them to this award, which goes to Takasago-beya for 5 yusho: Asanoyama (m Natsu), Asabenkei (sd Hatsu), Terasawa 2 (jk Haru, sd Nagoya) and Murata (jk Aki)

The Hochi 2019 pro sports award for the sumo category goes to Asanoyama http://hochi.news/articles/20191217-OHT1T50211.html

Today's Nikkan award is the thrower award - it goes to Shohozan: most wins by nage techniques - 14, with 5 different ones  - 33% of all his wins

201912180000143-w1300_0.jpg

Hakuho like Okinoumi had only 12 wins - with 6 different nage, 9 wins had Endo, Asanoyama and Nishikigi

Yesterday Nikkan had the rikishi below ozeki who achieved 6 kachi-koshi in makuuchi this century - Abi did it this year, 2017 Mitakeumi, 2008 Harumafuji, 2006 Miyabiyama, Kotomitsuki and Kisenosato, 2004 Wakanosato (the only one retired in this list who didn't make it to ozeki) and 2001 Tochiazuma

201912190000066-w200_0.jpgo

and those who managed to have 6 makekoshi fighting in makuuchi - happened to Nishikigi this year, 2008 Tokitenku, 2003 Takanonami

201912190000066-w200_2.jpgo

They didn't have any funny named awards for these achievements (or not), unlike for today's award, in an extra thread http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/topic/39524-strange-yearly-prizes/

And now, the longest bout average for 2019. Hakuhou with 13.8 seconds is the winner, followed by Ichinojou with 13.2. "Interesting data," he said. Hakuhou had an average of 4.93 seconds per bout in Aki 2007 when he was promoted to Yokozuna. The most seconds in all for 2019 goes to Ryuuden who fought in all  90 bouts and accumulated 1102.9 seconds.

How many years is it now? I know he 'lost' to the Harumafuji scandal in 2017.

I never would have guessed that. It seems the guy does more stuff than slapping people.

Well, harite is a tactic.  Nobody has it listed as their winning kimarite.  And his oshi/yori win rate is 7/4, which means he's often slapping you around while he's moving forward to push you out.

Interesting. We all know sumo bouts are typically short, but I never would have guessed that the longest average bout length was that short.

Now, the most second half of the basho wins. Hokutofuji, Daieishou and Shoudai are tied for the most wins from day 9-15. All three have eight more wins in the second half than in the first half this year. 19-23 in the first half, 27- 15 in the second half for Hokutofuji and Daieishou and 17-25 / 25-17 for Shoudai. Well, it does  make sense as they collectively faced the very top rankers during the first half of  nearly every basho, being ranked between higher Maegashira and lower sanyaku.

Shodai would probably have had a bigger differential without the anomaly that was Kyushu 2019 for him after the huge drop in the banzuke.

Sadly it's more of a "classic Shodai" than an anomaly. His 11-4 as M3w in 2016.11 was an anomaly, because it was his only KK at M3 oder higher. Even at M4 he has only 2 KK on his account. Every time he gets into the meatgrinder, it's almost sure he gets obliterated, the only question is how bloody it will get.

He's the managing director of the Yomiuri (includes Hochi) Giants baseball team, Imamura 今村司, in for top award recipient Yoshihiro_Maru, like oyakata receive the award for a rikishi sometimes, though in Imamura's case there is not a hint in his biography that he even was in a sports club in university. He also produces sports broadcasts for Nihon (=Yomiuri) TV.

The JSA Japan pro sports awards are late - and most likely there will be none this year. There had been one each year since 1968, but the Japan pro Sports Association had to face an investigation 2 years ago, and problems with that ominous compliance ideal were pointed out by a committee from the cabinet office - just what Taka wanted for the NSK. The Japan pro sports top award is a prime minister's cup, and this year the government hasn't given the JSA the permit to hand it out.  Since last year November, there had been no meeting of the JSA hyogi-in kai, which just as for the NSK is the highest placed corporate body of the public interest corporation, that has to sanction every decision. The JSA wants to make improvements and have some conference till March. https://www.kanaloco.jp/article/entry-209787.html

True, but not neccessiarily contrary to what I meant to say. Shodai had a strong first week in Kyushu, but would he have had the usual Shodai Performance in Aki (7-8 or 9-6) instead of the abysmal 3-12, he could have been very close to the top again and might have had a bigger differential in that category. The severe de-ranking he got probably helped getting a rather unusual 5-2 in week 1.

Nikkan had some kind of main award, the most spirited rikishi of the year, according to the results from the daily NSK poll among spectators and paying app customers about which rikishi showed the most fighting spirit - over the whole year search/spirited 2019

On aggregate it was Takakeisho: most times top, 23, and with 1st place=3 points, 2nd 2 and 3rd 1, he is the only to have over 100 points - 102 - and that with 25 days out of contention - kyujo. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201912230001096.html

The 62nd Hochi sponsored best rikishi of the year award wiki/年間最優秀力士賞 goes to Hakuho, now he has this award the 10th time, till 2015 he had received it 9 times in a row. 7 times winners are Taiho and Chiyonofuji.

Hakuho got it as the only one to get 2 yusho this year - out of 4 basho he really competed in, only in 3 till the end, and especially for expanding his yusho count to 43.

The selection committee of 5 this year were: Akito_Arima, Takayasu_Okushima, Mineko Nomachi 能町みね子, and from Hochi managing director Maruyama and chief editor Yamamoto. They had a heated discussion about who of the 5 yusho winners this year should get the award, in the end it was between Asanoyama and Hakuho. Asanoyama reminded them of Takahanada in his beginnings, but he isn't really outstanding yet. http://hochi.news/articles/20191224-OHT1T50188.html

The 56th Chuspo sponsored Sumo best makuuchi newcomer of the year award wiki/大相撲幕内最優秀新人賞 goes to Enho: "I didn't know there was such an award" - but he was happy. With 4 basho in makuuchi and 3 kachikoshi, one gino-sho, he is not really outstanding among the 11 candidates this year. The selection committee includes the top shimpan and the PR top from the NSK, the head of the YDC, the majority is from the sumo press club, and there is Kitanofuji, who writes a column for Chuspo: "No big wins, but also no big losses, that's splendid. And it's magnificent that while being a small guy, he doesn't henka at the tachi-ai."

20191227-00010009-chuspo-000-1-view.jpgo

The award ceremony for both awards is on day 1 of the Hatsu basho, before the start of makuuchi

Enho was in the focus on NHK news9 on the 25th (http://www.miomio.tv/watch/cc474905/ at 53min), presented as the most thrilling rikishi this year, and he will also be in the NHK Sumo This Year recap

Enho: With 4 basho in makuuchi and 3 kachikoshi, one gino-sho, he is not really outstanding among the 11 candidates this year.

The award for Enho actually was the most fitting: he literally got it as the best newcomer in Reiwa 1 (5-12.2019) - in Heisei 31 (1-4. 2019) he was not in makuuchi yet. For Hakuho it is doubtful though if he was the best in Reiwa 1, his first of 2 yusho this year was in Heisei, and he really competed only in 2 of the 4 basho in Reiwa 1.

A.D. year count in the yearly award titles would sound more logical  - but actually the proper translation is not Reiwa 1, but "Reiwa starting year"
