Eikokurai 3,437 Posted January 25, 2020 Hokutofuji equals his career-best record of 11 wins. Great to see.

I see. It is being used as a noun in the link though. Sai-nyumaku is more of an attribute, but most words in Japanese can be used as whatever you want, in the proper form and position in the sentence Edited January 25, 2020 by Akinomaki
Asashosakari 19,331 Posted January 25, 2020 Considering the difference in their career achievements it's getting rather surprising how much Ryuden has Mitakeumi's number. H2H now 5-1.
Dwale 419 Posted January 25, 2020 So, that happened. Wanted to pop on and compliment Hokutofuji's footwork this basho. Fancy s*** doesn't mean anything if you don't have the basics to support it. Hokutofuji is looking more like the rikishi we knew he could be.
Eikokurai 3,437 Posted January 25, 2020 (edited) Yutakayama makes it to double-digits too. 28 wins over three basho since he returned to Makuuchi, easily his best spell in the top division. Edited January 25, 2020 by Eikokurai
Godango 984 Posted January 25, 2020 Endo vs. Yutakayama was a very entertaining battle. It will be good to see Yutakayama in the joi-jin living up to his potential.
Gospodin 191 Posted January 25, 2020 I cannot believe that. This is unreal. Apologies for this meaningless post, but...
Eikokurai 3,437 Posted January 25, 2020 Yep. That's more or less the bout I imagined between Enho and Daieisho. Daieisho is just too good at controlling the centre, keeping his aite at arm's length and staying on the move, and with that defence Enho had no opening. Akinomaki 40,514 Posted January 25, 2020 (edited) This looks like it's the shukun-sho for Hokutofuji, he has much more shukun points than Shodai, but if Shodai gets the yusho after all, he must get a shukun-sho. Tokushoryu also a shukun-sho as 2nd sansho if he gets the yusho? - I don't think he'll get a 2nd, and also not the shukun-sho if Shodai beats him in a ketteisen, and he'll be the only one eligible to have beaten the yusho winner. Kaisei might end up as the only one to beat the yusho winner, but even if he wins tomorrow for his kachi-koshi, I can't imagine him to get a shukun-sho for that. Maybe they will avoid too many alternatively conditional sansho and just give it to Hokutofuji. Edited January 25, 2020 by Akinomaki
Adil 232 Posted January 25, 2020 Interesting exchange earlier between Wakanohana and Shigeki Kiyono (the blow-by-blow commentator on Abema TV). While talking about Kotoshogiku's 700th win, Wakanohana said that the other day, his daughter told him about his record and that he didn't know about his own win-loss record until then. In fact (he added), he didn't even keep track of his overall win/loss record while he was active because he didn't care about it. At that point, Shigeki Kiyono said: "If it had been Hakuho, he would really have cared about it, right?". Is it because Hakuho talks a lot about records? I have heard him talk about records, yes, but that was usually in response to questions put to him by reporters about his future goals etc.
Eikokurai 3,437 Posted January 25, 2020 Quite a lot of kensho for an utterly pointless bout between Tochinoshin and Takayasu.

Mitakeumi hasn't looked good since his last yusho.

Eikokurai 3,437 Posted January 25, 2020 Superb from Asanoyama! How did he get off the bales against Takakeisho? Incredible. Takakeisho out of the yusho race.

I was all set for a snarky "shukun-sho for ex-ozeki Goeido?" post while it still looked like a Shodai yusho. Curses on you, Tokushoryu. More seriously, isn't Hokutofuji's resumé this basho just that of a generic gino-sho recipient? Unless Takakeisho wins the...oh, and that's now out.
Godango 984 Posted January 25, 2020 Well that sucks, I was hoping for the start of a tsuna run for Takakeisho. Props to Asanoyama though, hopefully he wins tomorrow too so that he can make a serious push for Ozeki next tournament. Shodai or Tokushoryu then? Just seeing how devastated Takakeisho looks and it's breaking my damn heart.

Consistency has long been his problem but he's not showing his usual, high-level intelligent sumo. Maybe he was benefiting from an ageing sanyaku this whole time and can't keep up with the (slightly) younger brigade?
Asashosakari 19,331 Posted January 25, 2020 Also, I wonder if Takakeisho's loss means they'll now give Tokushoryu somebody else, perhaps Asanoyama. He's arguably got more to aim for, looking for double-digits for his ozeki run continuation.
Akinomaki 40,514 Posted January 25, 2020 Asanoyama wants to keep his ozeki run alive - now the value of Hokutofuji's shukun point dropped considerably - I think I'll stop thinking about the shukun-sho possibilities ...

There are too many Sansho candidates in this basho. Once Asanoyama got a hold of Takakeisho, it was over. The anguish on Takakesisho's face afterward was priceless. Tokushoryu's reaction after beating Shodai made me smile.
Asashosakari 19,331 Posted January 25, 2020 (edited) Other than maegashira yusho that were decided by Day 14, I wonder if there's ever been one that only had maegashira in the running on senshuraku. Edit: Okay, two - Kongo/Aobajo Nagoya 1975 and Tagaryu/Konishiki Aki 1984. And my oh my, I never realized just how many of those maegashira winners had wrapped it up by Day 14... Anyway, it seems it's only happened once and never in the 15-bout era: http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Query.aspx?show_form=0&form1_j=on&form2_y=on&form2_m=on Not really. Ryogoku didn't actually "return" from Juryo. Tokushoryu would be a first in that department, too.
